Xperia Z3 Compact

Hi guys. Was wondering if I could get advice. I'm looking to buy a Sony Xperia Z3 Compact but upon reading reviews, I noticed a trend of randomly cracked screens. Does anyone have any experience with this phone?

And if this is a problem, can anyone recommend a different phone with similar specs? The reason I'm after the Z3 compact is due to its small form factor without sacrificing good specs.

Cheers!

  • I don't know about Xperia Z3 Compact that much but Galaxy Alpha is around that size.
I am just putting this out there because you said small form factor.

Though there are rumours that Samsung will discontinue Alpha and continue the design concepts and stuff with A3 and A5. It can mean that we might see another decent deals for Galaxy Alpha.

  • Partner has one. The bottom tab kept coming out took it back after 5 weeks and they replaced with a brand new one. Other than that cant complain really good phone, specs, so fast, clear screen, amazing battery life - High usage approx on phone to 3hours a day calls and whatever and then random usage throughout the day and its about 50%!!

lol try not touching it for a day… it will amaze you… my Z3 left it for a day without touching it, full charge down to 92% from 8:00am to around 8:00pm…

  • I've had this phone for about two months now. Realy pleased with the performance. Battery is lasting much longer than my previous HTC. Bought mine for the same reason, compact with good specs. Got z3 for the wife just the other day and the difference is that z3 has a larger screen and is a touch thinner. Read a lot of reviews regarding screen issues on previous versions so invested $10 on a good screen protector (Bruedon tempered glass).

  • Cheers guys! Yeah I might take the risk and just buy it.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha looks good but I think the lack of microSD is a let down for me as I keep a lot of media on my phone. The battery life of the Z3 Compact is a huge +1 for me as I'm a heavy phone user.

Thanks again for the replies! It's really helped!

The Z3 is also waterproof while the Alpha is not. I think it's quite a big deal.

    • It is. Though, as I said, I only brought it up because of the small factor. It's hard to find a small factor phone on android that is not a budget phone.

      • You're right, this does makes these two quite unique.

Also worth mentioning that the Z3 range will be upgraded to 5.0 next month.

    • I have the Z3 compact. Did a waterproof test in my bathroom sink, it went fine.

About an hour later the phone screen went blank and any attempts to turn it on were greeted with vibrations and nothing else. Moisture also appeared behind the camera lens.

Luckily 3 hours in rice with the flaps open lead to it's full revival and the moisture was gone 2 weeks later.

It's a great phone, but the waterproof claims are false. Did some research, I'm not alone in this finding.

Just a thought. If the waterproof feature is important to you I'd look elsewhere.

It's no more waterproof than the Galaxy S4, which isn't waterproof, but can last a decent time underwater and can make a full recovery.

      • strange, our son has a Z3 (full) and it has been in the pool quite a few times no problems. His mate has the Z3 compact - the same , it has been underwater many times and no problems - maybe you have a fault with the 'flaps'

        • Earlier Z's have the little water indicator strips under the flaps so you can see if one failed, does the compact have those? My original Z flaps gave up the ghost and letter water in on the USB port one… Phone still mostly works though.

Considered getting a compact as a replacement as I don't like the big phones.

        • Weird. The pressure test works fine on mine, and I don't think Sony is addressing any faults related to waterproofing of their devices. It may be luck of the draw when getting a waterproof one.

  • anywhere to get this phone for less than $500?

    • kogan have them for 499. Probably grey import, though.

  • My Daughter purchased a Z3 last year, and is a victim of the known self-cracking screeen issue. Fonebiz want @$250 to repair it. Considering she has $30 a week to live on after rent, this might be a bit out of reach.
