What's Your Opinion of Myer?

In the last few years, I've noticed that I have tended to purchase items (clothes, electronics, cookware etc) from other department stores (eg. David Jones, JB-Hifi) over Myer. My experience is that the shopping experience of Myer has fallen (ie. Poorer returns policy, inconsistent price matching policy, low stocking levels, limited variety, and variable customer service).

I am in Perth with limited department store alternatives and was wondering if other states are experiencing this trend as well?

Generally here at vic they're very friendly sometimes also offer help, wouldn't know about price matching but my experience with myer is pretty swell

Also in Vic. Agreed, I find Myer to be great as far as customer satisfaction goes, easy returns, friendly staff & always happy to price match genuine offers & their prices at least on genuine sales are good too.
Have never had problems shopping at Myer or with their gear, people etc. Highly recommended.

I also agree, I am very happy to shop at Myer (in Victoria)
Staff are very helpful and friendly. Returned items with no issues. Price matched with no issues. Items not in stock have been ordered in.
Prices are generally higher but on a good sale I have bought in bulk a years worth of shirts.

        • Customer Service in retail is generally much better in Melbourne all-round than it is in Perth. Often the staff here are lazy, rude and unhelpful.

Shopping in Melbourne is a very pleasant experience generally.

Price matching is a joke. I only shop at Myer if i have gift cards as they are not competitive on pricing at all, even when given a catalogue with the exact same item at a better price. Customer service varies store to store and salesperson to salesperson. I have had the absolute worst experience ever with a salesperson at a QLD myer store mid last year and yesterday one of the best experiences of customer service at a NSW store. Wherever humans are involved your experiences will vary.

If you want cheap then rarely would you visit myer or dj's. It is just not their thing.

What, David Jones is more over priced than Myer, always has been (excluding some sales).

  • +1

I don't get why anybody shops at Myer anymore, their selection isn't that great, their prices aren't that great, customer service is so-so - but would you really pay that much more just for customer service?

    • They have good sales, and an excellent returns policy. I only go there when there is a toy or clothes sale, their regular prices are often beatable elsewhere

Their returns policy isn't any better than your usual KMart, Target, BigW returns policies, really.

Clothing selection is pretty horrible. Don't seem to be many bargains anymore, I use to find good stuff in the red ticket bins and racks with extra 75% off but haven't for a few years now. I don't like them. David Jones has better stuff but same thing really, prices are too high even when sales are on.

  • Price matching is a joke. I had a catalogue and the sales assistant told me that she would have to call a central number to check whether she could price match. She told me it could take 5-10 minutes and seemed to want to fob me off. I told her I'd wait. The person ended up calling back and telling her that it was below their cost price so they couldn't! It's a joke because the item was was 30% off the RRP at Target. Surely they need to make more than a 30% profit. That or they need to fire their buyer/negotiator.

I also just discovered that the hang tag and hanger were the wrong size on a clothing item. I know the tag was the right size because it's what I check when going through a rack. Unfortunately, I took the tag off and put it in the washing machine and only discovered the error when I went to dress my child. So now the tag is off I can't return it and have something too small.

  • They are relics. Dinosaurs. The whole big box department mall/store thing is dead. Its dying in America too:

If I want to buy something I'll likely just buy it online unless I want the warranty here.

Myers is one of my fav stores. Haven't had a problem with change of mind returns, good customer service - sometimes too good, esp in the perfume department, to the point where I feel a little guilty if I dont buy something!
Full priced items are pretty high, but when they have further 50-75% off already marked clearance products, its a damn good deal. Price matching a little pathetic however, they have a folder which list their cost price. One item I questioned about, they were selling for $189, other stores like TGG, Harvey Norman, BigW were selling it for about $100 shelf price, their cost price was $99.

I find the perfumes salespeople to be very pushy and irritating. Sometimes I just want to smell a few of the testers and they put on a hard sell and try and get me to try all the bottles. They are a rip off for perfume in Myer, I'd never buy from them.

Most of Myer clothes is their home brand. Neither quality nor design is much better than target. Their discount really means nothing.

      • +1

Maybe for men's clothing, but not for women. Got a dress for about $15 that was still $100 online on other stores, including asos.

        • Not for men's clothing either. Strange comment and not true

        • @drdolphin: it is actually true. Although to be honest I find some of Target men's clothes to be very good, e.g. adamsville branded shirts. They are $29 RRP but less than $10 when on clearance. Good quality casual shirts in a nice range of colours.

Myer Reserve house brand looks super dated and is very poorly made. It is just horrible. Same with many of their others, bad design and not worth buying. They have big margins on them so that's why they always discount up to 50%.

The brands like Sportscraft, country road etc are all managed separately so same prices as their other stores.

DJ is like Qantas. MYER is Virgin Australia. Target and Big W are Jetstar. Kmart is Tiger. Which one you prefer?

  • Texas Pacific Group (TPG), screwed Myers big time, they bought them 7-10years ago?

They went hard for short term profits and sold it and screwed the tax office out of 100s of millions.

Before I'd rate Myers alongside David Jones as a 7/10 and 8/10.

    Myers have never recovered.

Myers use to be a "goto" store for everything(lazy)… thats dissipated. Same as Rebels really a former goto store for everything sports related.

Both have bad service, bad/insufficient products and over priced.

  • The stores that I go to (generally hornsby, parramatta and sydney cbd) are horrible and in major needs of a refurb. Im thinking mainly of the change rooms - stained, ripped, worn carpet. Half the cubicles have broken locks. There is gum and god knows what else smeared on the walls and to top it off usually trash and a whole pile of clothes in the corner. Why would I shop there when I dont have to? Their new motto 'find wonderful' is pretty laughable all things considering.

  • My girlfriend loves the Taylor Swift perfume and generally that stuff is exclusive to Myer when it comes out. So I go there!

To be completely honest I always get really good service in Myer whenever I'm there. The perfume people aren't super pushy but that is probably because I approach them and I know what I want. The store occasionally has good deals on clearance stuff which I purchase every once in a while and their telephone staff are awesome - have had a few hitches with online delivery errors and they've gone above and beyond to help me out.

Most of their stuff is out of my lifestyle's price range but for the select few things I purchase from there they have been one of the better department chains I've shopped at in the last 5'ish years.

My 2c anyways (this is the Brisbane stores btw).
