  • Aww yeah, finally the 3GB RAM 32GB ROM version…anyone know if this is the Korean model that comes with 2 battery's in the box?

    • +1

I believe the Korean version is the F400K, whereas this is the D855 (one battery + wireless charging ability).

      • Ah ok, no worries. Thanks for the clarification PowerB!

  • +4

Still a good deal, but if you wanted to save 19c, you can get it delivered for $488.81 at T-Dimension

    • +6

I didn't post T-dimension's deal because DWI has slightly better reputation and thus losing 19cts.

      • +1

        Ah, good point! :)

      • +3

"Slightly better reputation"? Based on what?

        From ebay feedback:

        DWI 98.9% +ve from 33000
        T-Dimension 99.3% +ve from 42000

I have bought from both in the past, without an issue. But I find t-dimension more pleasant to deal with and if they are comparable in price, then I know where my money is going.

        • Nice. That was based on what i read on whirlpool. Both are reputable sellers. Why is T-dimension more pleasant to deal with not dwi?

        • +1

          @varunsic:

More communicative via email, prompter replies etc.

    • +6

I just want to say that I originally ordered through DWI on Thursday. They charged a 2% fee for PayPal, but I wanted it as quick as possible and didn't want to wait for a direct deposit, so it cost roughly $500 in the end.
They then ended up needing verification, which I only found out Saturday, and I was unable to verify until Monday. They were unresponsive to my email on Monday (and prior email on Saturday), so I called to verify.
As of 4pm today, my order still had not changed status, and hadn't been dispatched. I ended up calling to cancel (they didn't pickup), then used their live chat and was able to cancel.

I've since ordered from T-Dimension - The price was better ($485.60 AUD), no fee for using PayPal, and I received immediate order verification with no requirement to identify myself by phone or business email.

      Thanks for recommending them!

Not negging or being a smartarse. However, cannot find how the g3 is better (if it actually is) than my 3GB RAM 64GB ROM OnePlus one ?

    • +2

I would say Micro SD card slot and better camera.
BTW, the Lollipop update came through for me last week and it is better. And 4G is now a default option.

      • Lollipop on your G3, you mean?

        • Yes, Lollipop on the G3.
And 4G (= LTE) was not a default option prior to the update. You had to punch in a code to access LTE.

      • g3 has a quad hd screen and higher pixel density

        • -4

The cost of having a quad HD on the battery is not worth it. You cant even see the pixels on the OPO unless your eyes are 2cms away from the screen.

        • @18: I'm quite satisfied with FHD, but it is possible to see the difference between a "low" dpi screen and high dpi screen.

This paper might be of interest:
          http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jsid.186/abstract

There has been a rapid increase in the resolution of small-sized and medium-sized displays. This study determines an upper discernible limit for display resolution. A range of resolutions varying from 254–1016 PPI were evaluated using simulated display by 49 subjects at 300 mm viewing distance. The results of the study conclusively show that users can discriminate between 339 and 508 PPI and in many cases between 508 and 1016 PPI.

        • @eug: Sssh, you'll attract the idiots over here from reading Techdirt or whatever the latest faith based technology publication is. And they'll come over here blustering about how a scientific formula means more than noticing reality their own eyes and inform you how because of that the screen doesn't look better.

        • +1

          @18: I agree, and I have a G3.

        • +3

          @eug:

For instance the Lg G2 and Lg G3 both had 3000Mah batteries. The G3 had so many more advantages to help their battery life, such as a more efficient processor (Snapdragon 801 vs 800). However, it has a UHD display.

The lg G2 gets roughly 6hrs SOT with a days usage, whilst on the other, the LG G3 gets around 4hrs SOT.

So even though it had so many components to make it more efficient and use less battery, the UHD display pretty much ruined the excellent battery the LG G2 had. So is it really worth it? For something you barely notice. Or would you prefer an extended battery life?

        • @18: The problem isn't the QHD resolution, it's LG's implementation of it, either in the panel or their software. The Note 4's QHD display is more power-efficient than the Note 3's FHD display, for example.

If a phone lasts me through a whole day, I'll be satisfied for now. More battery life would be nice, but I don't really need more than a day since I recharge every night.

    • +7

They are very similar in terms of specs. The G3 does have a 1440p display which is a big turn on for a lot of people. I believe it is also smaller, even though they have the same screen size. Full spec comparisons can be found here.
      Phones are a personal choice.

      • Fair enough :)

      • +1

Be aware, the specs on phonearena (and others) are not always "accurate". By that I mean, you may read that link and think the G3 doesn't do the 700mhz Band 28 for LTE Optus etc are rolling out, however, the D855 does have 700mhz Band 28 for LTE. So phonearena can be used broadly, but you still need to dig deeper.

    • -4

I believe LG phones are made in Korea. Korea > China in quality.

      • All iPhone are made in China anyway.

        • +2

It all comes down to quality control. Regardless where it is made.

      • +1

        That's just dumb.

    • not much difference but you get a known brand and what comes with it ….. etc both are great choices and just comes down to preference :)

      • You get a relatively much reduced level of support if you buy Oneplus One as compared to LG.

        • yep thats what comes with a better known n more widely spread brand like LG :)

    • The only thing better on the oneplus is that batterylife the g3 takes the rest

    • +4

I have both the OnePlus One and the LG G3. Even though my OnePlus One has a yellow band and dead pixels, I prefer it to the G3.

      A few points:
-The camera on the G3 is slightly better due to its stabiliser. Laser focus works though it's somewhat gimmicky. Note that on AOSP ROMS (e.g. Cyanogenmod), the camera won't work as well.

-The G3 supports the 700mhz Band 28 for LTE. Optus and Telstra are rolling out significant upgrades to their LTE networks under this band. The OPO doesn't support band 28.

-Performance on the G3 is merely OK. Despite having the same Snapdragon 801, the G3 stutters all over the place on stock firmware at QHD resolutions. It's slightly smoother (still not at smooth at the OPO) on AOSP ROMS but then your FM radio doesn't work and the camera looses a lot of it's quality under those ROMS. The G3 aggressively slows itself because it's prone to overheating under load.

-The G3 screen turned out surprisingly inferior. It's resolution makes it marginally sharper but the colours and viewing angles are poor (it's OK for LG's theme by you notice it when you go to brightly coloured lollipop theme). The G3's max brightness is about 60-70% that of the OPO. Even worse, it won't go beyond 90% brightness sometimes due to overheating under load.

      -OPO battery life is better.

Overall I will be selling the G3 because of the laggy UI and the inferior screen. The OPO just feels that much more enjoyable to use. That said, if those things don't matter to you and you need a removable battery and SD card, the G3 is still a good phone.

    • Which has the better battery life of the two?

      • OnePlus One has significantly better battery life but the G3's battery is removable. You can also get extended batteries for the G3.

    • Yep, same conclusion I came to and long before they arrived at a similar cost.
      Skipping G(4)

I was about to ask, but smartly noticed. Saved me a few seconds there.

    • Simple is the new smart.

  • One thing I love about this phone is the IR blaster, it was a life saver when we stayed at a hotel which had their own tv remote and didnt let you access the usb media function.

    • +1

Which also btw works in the Alfred hospital TVs, just scan TEAC, 5th model , presto, free tv.
Others might work also since the same company supplies dozens of locales

  • +1

My friend bought the i9506 from DWI not long ago but found out that it was not new and they agreed return.

  • Would anyone recommend the HTC M8 over the G3? I aim for a good camera and battery life only. Same price if you buy from Dicksmith.

    • I don't think DSE has any more stock of M8.

    • I don't own either but I believe the general consensus is that the UltraPixel camera on the M8 was underwhelming while the OIS on the G3 makes it a good camera phone choice? I wouldn't be surprised if they dropped the UltraPixel from the M9 (they already have from the M8 EYE model).

Some battery life comparisons (including these two phones) here:

      http://ausdroid.net/2015/01/06/moto-x-2014-review/

      • +1

I don't own either but I believe the general consensus is that the UltraPixel camera on the M8 was underwhelming

I think it depends on what kind of photos you take. For simple quick happy snaps that you're uploading to facebook/instagram/snapchat, I think the low-light sensitivity and really fast speed of the M8's camera gives it an edge over others.

If you're taking photos that you intend to enlarge to bigger than A5, or need greater dynamic range, or for pure image quality, there are better phone cameras out there.

        • I think that's a really good point, eug. There'd be a lot of people that fall into the former category.

    • How do you get an M8 for $500?

      • called up various dicksmith and one store was willing to put a new order request through. Said they will reserve for me. But there is no confirmation of time of arrival and I need a replacement phone asap.

    • +1

I have the D855, my brother the M8.
I've toyed about switching to the M8 primarily for the awesome speakers, headphone sound and look and feel.
Ultimately stuck with the G3 for removable battery, unbeatable camera, wireless charging and knock code.
Since updating to jellybean and putting a custom Rom (Cloudy) on it, so happy with my decision

Samsung Galaxy S4 Plus i9506 4G LTE 16GB WHITE only. $399.00 with coupon
    http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/astore/Samsung-Galaxy-S4…

    • +1

      Thanks for advertising but no.

    • +1

I'm not sure why an s4plus would even be comparable to the g3.

I have my mums s4 I9505 in the drawer. While the s4 camera it's nice, the bloatware is horrendous and it's actually slower to do a lot of things than my s3 omega Rom 4.4.4.

They may as well have called that phone an s3plus :s

      • so what's your recommended phone with $400 max budget? Im helping a friend, she only wants Samsung.

The $399.00 is i9506 not i9505, faster processor

        • +3

          LG G2.

Amazing battery life, fast processor (who cares if it's last year's, performance is all the same these days), brilliant screen (much more accurate than Samsung) and good camera.

          Can't go wrong.

        • I think you can all get the Xperia Z Ultra locally for about $350. If she doesn't mind a big phone it's still probably the best bang phone.

        • +1

Why does she want Samsung? Do she enjoy inflicting pain on herself?

I have just ordered a HTC Desire 816 for my mum (ordered Monday, looking like it will arrive tomorrow) $311 delivered incl. insurance, she wanted a big phone (like my Oneplus One she said), but had a budget of about $300.
Optus stores have the on display to handle ($398)
A good midrange phone, like a bigger, slimmer Moto G.

        • The deal that you have shown above fits her needs perfectly. I'll defer to the other answers in response to you for alternative suggestions.

The problem is that $400 doesn't seem to be the right price point for most android phones, since there are plenty of budget options within the 240-300 mark, and plenty of last-gen killers at $400-500.
All the newer stuff is about 480-1200, depending on what you get and where you source it.

So my recommendation is the samsung you posted, or the LG G2.

  • +3

    G3 better then oneplus one
    Better display
    Better Camera
    removal battery
    SD Card slot available
    QI Wireless charging
Power/Volume buttons on the back of the phone
    Laser focus

just go to gsmarena.com to compare the models

PLUS your buying a more popular brand with more local support

    • +2

Although the g3 is a better phone I think the oneplus represented better value for me when i bought it for $420.
The g3 does have a more pixel dense display but it also requires more processing power to drive those additional pixels. Without the 2 phones side by side you won't notice the difference. Reviews have stated they notice a bit of lag due to this. LG also released a snapdragon 805 version of this phone which some what solves this issue but it'll cost you more.
At this price my decision to to with the oneplus would have been much more difficult

    • +2

I agree with everything you said, and if I could have gotten a G3 for ~AUD$420 when I got my Oneplus One, I would have been all over it. In saying that, I have no regrets & love the Oneplus One, but with the falling AU$ & the OPO price pushing closer towards G3 price, for me it would now be a flip of the coin.
I do prefer the OPO FHD display as opposed the the QHD G3 which I find not as bright and with poorer angles. I have also become accustomed to the awesome battery life on the OPO, and of course 64gb native storage is great (sd card support on the G3 is good, but not as good as native storage).

  • locked bootloaders are stopping me buying any LG products atm, they promised to start unlocking 6 month ago but since then they have been super quite about it, I know there is workaround the locked bootloader but it is a pain in the butt to make custom roms and kernels.

    • +1

G3 is good enough without ANY custom roms or kernels.

All you need is G3 Tweakbox, and you are done.

I'm not even using any of the tweaks that I had on S3, including Nova launcher, AC!D audio, Mods etc

It is THAT good. Best phone of the year > 6 plus and One plus One

      • No it is not good enough for someone who wants to use a custom kernel.

Seriously how can you justify something that way lol.

Also Nova Launcher isn't a tweak that you need a custom kernel or unlocked bootloader for. The clue is in the name LOL.

        • -1

Nova launcher requires root access….if you didn't know.

I see not much advantage running custom roms these days if the stock is good enough.

You know how much time you need to spend keep things up to date with Csutom ROMs?

It's nuts, and potentially you remove IR blaster functions like QuickRemote with it.

I used to tinker a lot back in the Samsung days with S3, not anymore.

A phone is a phone no need to go nuts customise every single mod with roms update every week

        • +3

          @neonlight:

Nova launcher requires root access…if you didn't know.

          No it doesn't.

        • @eug:

Try copying Widgets without see how you go.

Some features requires root dude. And it's crap without root

        • @neonlight: Copy widgets? For what?

I've used it for years on many of my devices. It works great. No root needed. Not everyone needs those "some features".

        • @eug:

Up to you. For me it's either use it with full features all root not some half ass launcher.

Do as you please. Either full customisation or nothing.

You probably love spending time adding Widgets to every launcher that's fine. No arguments the

        • @neonlight: So would you like to correct your earlier statement?

Nova launcher requires root access…if you didn't know.

Nova Launcher does not require root access.
"Some features" within Nova Launcher require root access.
Not everyone cares about those features.

        • @neonlight: Nova Launcher does not require root access….if you didn't know.

As for time: none since it can be set for automatic updating (granted depends on ROM).

    • +1

i can't speak to the difficulty of making custom roms or kernels, but from an end users perspective. root and custom rom has been very simple with my G3. currently enjoying Official CM12 nightlies.

  • +1

Add $60 more, you can also get the dual sim version for those who need that function

      • There's more apps on Google Play than the App Store and the gap is growing. The iPhone is a good-looking phone if that's your priority but I'd rather pay less for a phone that does a lot more.

        • +1

          lol 'a measly $380'?

THIS IS OZBARGAIN! (in a spartan roar)

        • -2

LEL. Let's not mention the elephant in the room coughappqualitycough

So great point if you don't care about that.

        • @Diji1:

Almost all of the top apps perform identically on both platforms, although it's true that some games are only on iOS. Conversely, most of the functionality of apps that I use all the time - like Tasker - is just not possible on iOS. Also, you can't effectively block ads on iOS without using a dodgy proxy which is a major drawback for me.

      • +4

iPhone 6/6+ cannot do 4K video and has no removable battery. No matter how good that after sales service is, you will end up with a refurbished phone. And, the "quality", well, I got 2 consecutive brand new iPad's with dead pixels.

Okay, apps - iOS still have an advantage in games (but Android has some apps that you will never see in iOS). Not a big fan of Apple Maps. Also, I like to point out (yet again) you cannot copy attachment from one e-mail into another e-mail reply. I guess if you jailbreak the iPhone, you can do it (you don't need to root Android to do that). And, thanks to Apple for breaking FaceTime on iOS 6 and older versions of iOS 7.

iOS 7/8 copied a lot from Android.

LG G3 is more like iPhone 6+. With "extra" $510, you can get another LG G3. Sleek design of iPhone 6/6+? The back of it (the lens sticking out, and the material used at the back) reminds me of an iPod Touch 5th gen. The biggest change in iPhone 6/6+, larger screen… I wondered where Apple got that idea from….

  • +2

    What's DWI's reputation for warranty?

    • +2

      Pathetically poor.

Took them over 6 weeks to accept my faulty camera for a refund.

DWI are great when you don't have an issue.

      • I'll second that.
Used to buy from DWI a lot, until I had a problem with $1K video camera (it was just on month old when it died).
Their warranty procedure & customer service were horrendous. Took over 3 months & many phone calls (well attempted calls since the phone goes dead when you have a problem) & emails to get it sorted. Even the I had to take "repaired" camera to a local service center to have optics cleaned.
Their prices & delivery are great, just pray you don't have to call them for warranty support.

  • Not too shabby but I think there'll be bigger price drops as more 805 phones hit the stores over the next 8 weeks.

    • Don't see any other Snapdragon 805 phones coming out (if thats what you are referring to)?

The first big release of 2015 is the LG G Flex 2 which came with the Snapdragon 810 with other phones like the S6, M9 and Z4 all rumoured to come with the 810. Which makes sense because the 805 was really 'designed' to be a tablet processor as the modem is not intergrated with the CPU.

      • Oh.. OK, 810 then.

  • I've got a Galaxy S2 which has been great but is getting very slow/unreliable. One thing I like about Samsung though is it's got FREE Navigon sat nav software which doesn't require an active internet connection (unlike Google Maps). Is there anything like this included with the G3?

  • Hi guys

This or htc M7 for 300 ( dick smith deal) ?

I am aware there is no comparison in terms of technology however i am interested in value as i am fine with not so fancy technology .

    • All depends on your needs. I'm a light user and the M7 is perfect for me (paid $260). Good battery life and does everything I need. At $300 vs $490 it's a toss-up for best value/money IMO

    • While I'll be getting myself a G3 at some point (currently on G2), you really can't go wrong with the HTC at that price.

It's a great phone with a perfectly decent processor, screen, camera, and GREAT build quality.

Having the latest and greatest doesn't mean much these days as processing power and features are plateauing. Grab a deal with the HTC for sure.

      • thanks

        yep !! agreed

Bought HTC yesterday for $300 :)

        • Score. :)
