To be honest, $13 for SMG 2 is amazing considering the price of a pre-owned copy these days. Even at $26, it's full price, it's a step in the right direction.

    • +3

Seriously. Considering the price Nintendo charge for old games this is a steal for a 'modern classic'

    • +2

Pretty sure metroid prime trilogy is a bigger deal, it goes for like 300 dollars on ebay.

      • It does?? I swear I have a copy somewhere.

        • Probably wont now that its on the estore.

  • +2

Wow, that's a pretty good price. probably my favourite game on the Wii.

    More info about it here:
    http://www.vooks.net/downloadable-wii-games-coming-to-wii-u-…

  • +5

Second week is donkey kong country returns in aus. If i can get metroid trilogy for $13 id be pretty happy. Hopefully this means gamecube games will come as well.

    • +7

My 6 year old keeps asking me to email "Mr Nintendo" so she can ask him to release Luigi's mansion on the Wii U.

      • +13

Its worth a shot, im sure mr nintendo is a reasonable guy

    • The Nintendo Direct this morning, Satoru Iwata mentioned that they were releasing Wii games (that have been previously unreleased due to needing to use the Wii-menu inside the wii-u) but gave no evidence to including Gamecube games. He also mentioned that this is because the console is backwards compatible for the wii (It is not currently backwards compatible for Gamecube games).

I would say, likelihood of gamecube games on the Wii-U is still very minimal. :( Who knows, though.

      • The Wii U can definitely run GameCube games. I play them on mine all the time. I used to use the pro controller, but it's even better with the new GameCube adapter.

        • List of Wii U backwards compatible games

The following list is a sample of some of the games that will be available for the Wii U through the Virtual Console.

          Super Mario 64
          Mario Kart 64
          Wave Race 64
          Mario Golf
The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time
          Mario Tennis
          F-Zero (SNES)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
          Super Mario World (SNES)
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (GameCube)
          Metroid Prime (GameCube)
          Super Smash Bros. Melee (GameCube)
          Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube)

Apparently this has been there for years via download. Well there you go, makes me look like a silly sausage. That explains why Satoru didn't say anything this morning then.

        • The Wii U definitely doesn't run GC Games…..

        • +1

          @FrankMcFuzz:
Those GC games aren't available and never have been on any e-shop.

And the 64 games there are only available via the emulated Wii Channel, not on the par of the re-released GBA, NES and SNES games of late.

        • @scuderiarmani: Then I officially have no idea. Luckily, I still have my Gamecube so I don't need to worry too much :3

        • @scuderiarmani:

The Wii U can run GC games natively via the Wii channel, but you need to get the homebrew channel setup and download the Nintendont app. It works really well, all games I have played have so without too much issue. Can use any controller except the gamepad, I've been using the Wii U pro controller.

Saves me from having to find my Gamecube in all the rubbish in the garage!

        • @FrankMcFuzz: you can homebrew your wii u via the wii channel and play gamecube games emulated so the wii u is very capable of running them its just a matter of if and when nintendo would sell gc titles on the e shop. It may not happen at all but to me it makes sense with the gc adaptor for wii u being released. Never had a gc so would love to play the classics

        • -2

          @s4sep:

Well yes if you want to run them illegally :)

        • @FrankMcFuzz:

Even if by some chance it couldn't the Wii u is more than powerful enough to emulate them. They know the exact specifications of the system, the optimization they could do would be amazing.

        • @scuderiarmani:

I wasn't debating the legality, I was just stating that the Wii U is capable of running GC games. There is absolutely no technical reason why they couldn't do it.

    • +2

if they do Mario Sunshine better be the first game that gets announced

  • +2

This game still holds up today due to great design. Would expect the usual ridiculous Nintendo pricing but this is quite reasonable.

Note: only buy it if you don't have it or you can't be bothered hooking up your Wii/using your disc because it's the same game.

    • If you own the disc it plays on the Wii U too.

  • Will the graphics be improved on the Wii U?

    • No

    • +4

Perhaps you could notice marginal improvements as a side effect of running over HDMI rather than one of the analogue cables from the original wii

      • Does it upscale to 1080p?

        • In the same way your TV upscales older content. The games aren't actually rendered at 1080p so there's no real improvement.

        • @Merlict: My TV still plays 480p and 576i content in that resolution and looks terrible but PS1 games upscaled to 1080p on PS3 actually look pretty decent.

  • possible to purchase from pc as ill probably forget by the time i get home

    • You could just set a calendar reminder? I'm tempted to have a weekly recurring task going since they'll be doing weekly releases, and the first week apparently will have the title 50% off. I'd probably have missed a bunch of Xbox Live Games With Gold had I not set up a reminder.

    • Not possible. No idea why Nintendo wouldn't just copy everyone else in terms of store structure and game accessibility. Would have sold 10-20% more consoles if people could access t their content across multiple systems.

    • Hi dillyz, can you show me how to purchase from PC? I have just purchased my Wii U from Amazon.co.uk and it's not gonna be here on time.

I guess I would just buy it first then play when my console arrives.

      Thank you!

      • +1

        You can't.

      • +1

Find someone else who owns a wii-u, create a nintendo network account, buy it on there, wait, get your WIi-U, ?????, profit!

What, you think Nintendo is going to make it easy for you? Naw, it's Nintendo we're talking about.

        • +2

It will be linked to that console, not your profile.

        • Which you'll just need to call nintendo to transfer that NNID to the new one when it comes in, it's a pain to do but it's doable.

  • Looks good! I might need a good deal on a Wii U now. :)

  • This is good.

But does this mean no HD version?

    :(

    • Game looked gorgeous as is. Rather then make HD version, lets get new games. Like Splatoon and Yoshi Yarn. Oh and Xenoblade.

      • It breaks my heart to see it on a full HD TV 60".

I mean, everything SD looks disappointing.

Just sad, this in HD would look gorgeous, not its current state.

      • Scrap those games a new metroid without blooody motion controllers.

        • +1

You can't scrap Splatoon! I need my animorphs-style Squid-girl action before you can get your Metroid! >:O

I wager a Metroid hint will be dropped at E3 this year, since Nintendo is following the trend of actually delivering at E3.

        • +1

          @FrankMcFuzz:

Apparently there is one being hinted at in development for the new 3DS advertisement that lists Metroid in it.

Also, I am pumped for Splatoon.

Frank, MH4 demos out, its time we hunt friend.

  • +1

If only they allowed me to use a pro controller.
The wii controller/ motion bar is probably the worst thing about platformers on wii. Its the sole reason i upgraded to Wii U was so i could play games without doing ridiculous motions.
Donkey Kong on wii was horrendous for controls.

    • +1

They will allow the Wii U controller apparently for any games that supported the Wii Pro Controller. Doesn't help for Mario Galaxy 2 or Donkey Kong however.

      • You can actually use an ocarina code to change it to use the classic controller

        http://www.pixlbit.com/news/1037/donkey_kong_country_returns…

        • Interesting. It'd be nice if they rebuilt the game with that built in, even if they didn't clean up the UI so that any tutorials reflected the change.

I was actually curious about controller support for twilight princess from discussions further down. Given TP was also released on the Gamecube, I'd have imagined there'd be controller code in there even if it's disabled, although perhaps the code was forked more than I'd imagine.

    • does it let you use the IR leds built into the gamepad instead of the sensorbar?

  • I would love to start seeing Wii back catalogue arrive, like Xenoblade and Zelda

    • +2

With Xenoblade being released on N3DS this year, I find the chance of getting a Wii version quite unlikely. However, as someone who doesn't plan on getting the N3DS and has been trying to get Xenoblade for years; GOD DAMN NINTENDO PLEASE MAKE A WII-U SHOP AVAILABLE XENOBLADE

      • +2

The new one comes out this year and should satisfy :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvpNXhzscjQ

        • +1

          AHHHHHHHHHHH it's so pretty!

          Edit: I'm really feeling it!

      • Oh yes please. Xenoblade would be great to replay while waiting on the new one.

        • They are releasing it on the 'new' 3DS this year too I believe, though whether that in Japan I don't know. If you cannot wait get into Dolphin. edit* Frank already pointed this out :P

        • @Infinite Monkee:
Have played it on Dolphin in the past but would still be nice to have it on Wii U. And will definitely be getting it on 3DS.

        • +1

          @Ravensbane: Wii U>Everything :D

  • +3

    Metroid Prime: Trilogy (Jan. 29).

    THIS!!!

You don't understand how hard it is to find this game for a reasonable price, go screw yourselves over priced second hand rip off merchants!

    • Sold my copy for $150, which is reasonable considering the demand

      • Was it the metallic case at least?

  • I'll still hang onto my Metroid Trilogy (my favourite game series), bit annoyed as I'll be OS shortly so won't be able to purchase for half price :(

  • +1

Not into the other games but I'll try out Metroid for sure. Would love to see the Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess as well.

  • +1

I've got my fingers crossed for Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn to get a release - I haven't been able to track it down at a reasonable price up until now.

Given they've been releasing the GBA versions it at least gives me some hope it can happen!

    • man I am hooked on this series now after the 3DS title, playing through the GBA one on my phone atm

      • If you saw the Nintendo Direct this morning, you'd know they're making a new Fire Emblem 3DS game with a lot of visual resemblence to ye olde Japanese Samurai times!

  • +3

Wow this is amazing. I had no idea metroid prime trilogy was going for so much online. I have a pristine copy at home in a cupboard. Maybe it's time to fire up that eBay profile again.

    • +2

yeah do it now whilst its worth something! and nab yourself the digital copy on Wii U with the profits

      • It'll still be worth alot, people want physical copies… I just sold countless collectors items like mint complete Link to the Past, Banjo Tooie, Conkers etc etc

  • +2

I hope Fire Emblem Radian Dawn goes up someday for $13.

  • Is there a way to purchase online from the E-Shop and then download once your console is on (e.g. like Xbox live?

    • Unfortunately not

    • +2

It's Nintendo… it took them years just to link the 3DS and console eshops, and separate it from hardware account.

  • Not normally a fan of digital purchases as I'm old school and like physical games but I would be happy to spend $13 on these titles.

So you move digital titles or move ur account to another wii u console if the one it was on originally dies or gets stolen? Any other way to protect ur digital titles or stop somebody else using wii u if they get a hold of it?

  • Would love to see Zelda SS and TP released, but using the Wii U remote instead (or even the classic controller). I can't stand using the stupid Wii remote and nunchuck.

    • +1

Luckily, Nintendo is moving away from the waggle, but the Nintendo Direct this morning did specify that it would only work if they were compatible with the pro controllers. And given the nature of SS (Half of the puzzles and enemies are based around motion control! JEEZ) I believe that the dreaded waggle will remain as frustrating.

    • +1

I'd agree with Twilight Princess but Skyward Sword completely turned me on the Wii Remote. It works so well with that controller slashing is practically 1:1, in a way that doesn't feel tacked on like TP.

  • -1

Is there a way to buy these games without having a wii u at hand?

    • +1

      it was asked just above…

    • +1

Nope. In fact, I just tried it then and couldn't purchase because my console doesn't have the space for the install which is just crazy. PS4, Xbox, and Steam allow you to purchase games for install later. Some even allow purchase on another device for remote install. It's like Nintendo doesn't know how the internet works.

Oh, and the Wii U storage situation is ridiculous. They discourage you from storing games on USB flashdrive due to read/write, don't let you store games on SD card (unlike 3DS), and the console's USB ports don't supply enough power for a portable HDD. So either you get a Y-cable/portable HDD set-up (which uses both USB ports), or get an external HDD with power supply. With that set-up, you have to write off 3 power plugs. 1 for console, 1 for HDD, and another for the gamepad, since that thing inexplicably can't charge from the console either. I love their games, but the hell Nintendo.

      • If you're smart you'll just use a usb stick or sd card with usb reader. I think the reason they discourage it is because they think the market might get flooded with bad chinese flash drives sold for the wii u. Technically there is no danger with using good flash storage on the wii u instead of a hard drive. Hard drive are more likely to have problems and will be slower in reality.

        • Was considering it, but Wii U games a crazy big. Bayonetta 1 and 2 are 14-17GB each, which kinda rules out a flash drive for me. I wish you could just slide in a commercial HDD or SSD, or Nintendo just installed better ports on the thing.

        • @Strand0410: you can use the USB to connect a 2.5" portable HD?

        • @wtfnodeal: The console's USB ports don't individually provide enough power for a portable HDD. You can buy a Y cable to connect a portable HDD but you're writing off 2 USB ports.

        • I had a spare 60GB SSD and it runs off one USB port.

      • Wow I just encountered the same thing, and just when I thought Ninten-doh was getting better in the modern age by updating the purchase function from the US Online store. It's bonkers considering the 8GB and 32GB variants aren't even large at all in the first place.

Also the HDD makes it a big pain if you ever want to take the Wii U somewhere, so many bloody cables and chargers to bring. Forgot the Wii U Gamepad charger? Looks like no Nintendoland tonight :(

Curious to see how the data works on the HDD, can you transfer it to another one later, or is it stuck on there?

EDIT: I just read up that the downloaded content saved to one harddrive will only work on a single Wii U console. Which kind of makes sense I guess, but is lame.

        http://www.nintendo.com.au/wii-u-download-content-qa

        • No transferring, backup or flexibility.

  • I'm on the lookout for A nunchuck + additional controllers.

Even though it states I need a nunchuck my brain missed that part and I've downloaded the game.. I'm ready to play!

Where's the best place to buy them? eBay seems to be full of either special promotion ones for $80+ or fakes for $10.

  • +2

I really should have bought a heap more of e-shop credit during that EB Games 20% off special.

    Regrets…

    • I bought alot… but used it by 31 Dec to earn more premium vouchers… not surprised this happened.

      • Same. Spent $65 worth of credits just to earn $7. Spent them all on dlcs and old games

  • Big sale on some indie games on Wii U. Steamworld dig, guacamelee, teslagrad and bit trip to name a few.
    Until 22nd of January.
