eBay is just fantastic. [whinge post]

I recently received a DSi with a few games which I had no use for so I listed them all on ebay individually with free shipping.

One of the games, Art Academy, sold for a whopping $3.77. Seriously? The bidders can't even muster up $5 for a game that has free shipping?

This annoyed me because eBays fees are now 9-10% so they took 37c, and of course I had to pay for shipping which luckily is only $1.40 for DS games in a small parcel, but I have to pay for the parcel as well.. so I'm looking at about 80c for the game. Great. I'll put that straight in the bank.

Why is the OP complaining about someone who got themselves a bargain.

  • People need to keep in mind that buyers generally visit eBay to find bargains. Also, for an auction, the price you will get for your item depends on the second highest bidder.

Unless you have hard to find items or items in high demand, you need to be prepared for the worst if you list the item for auction. Auctions with free shipping carry the highest risk. Auctions on eBay have high risk, but could sometimes translate to higher returns.

eBay is not a place for casual sellers to make profit. It is a fine for you to do a garage sell there. If you don't want surprises on eBay, use fixed price listing with require immediate payment.

  • I dont see how ebay or buyer are at fault. You didnt have reserve price and you got minimal price as the product you are selling is not very popular in the 21st century. I once sold kids TV and dvd player for 0.99c for both and had only myself to blame.

  • I recently sold a couple of item on eBay and just got the invoice this morning. I'm just pissed that ebay charges 9.9% of the total value and then PayPal charges around 5% of the transaction value. I'm going to avoid selling anything on eBay.

Were you not aware of the fees prior selling? Maybe you should do some research next time to avoid any nasty shocks.

      Also, PayPal only charges 2.4% + $0.30.

Obvously you didn't do your research with selling old stuff.

For future sake find out what the item sells for on ebay then make your own price up. Either lower to sell fast or high to get most return. Also when thinking of postage think about the price effect as this could turn off some buyers but also stating its in aus could negate the postage price as the delivery time will be short.

I have sold some old stuff for a fair while and I have learnt that the above is crucial in getting a sale and profitting from it.

Do a "Completed Listings" search so you know what to expect based on the condition of your item.

  • So you're whinging at eBay and the bidders cause you didn't put a reserve price or a higher minimum starting price?

  • As a former Powerseller, never list anything up for sale for less than what you can afford to sell it for. The strategy of expecting rampant buyers to drive your free .99c auction up to 100's of dollars never worked for me, more likely they just buy it for less than it costs you in fees etc. Set a starting price that's aggressive but covers your costs (including fees) and a little bit of profit. Worst case you still walk away with something.
