Twisted Knee Problem

Hi there.

3 days ago while I was playing soccer i twisted my left knee and heard a popping noise. My friends are assuming it is my cruciate ligament..anyway I went to the hospital after that and got an x-ray done. I spoke to the dr. that had a look at my x-ray and she said there is nothing serious,no fracture, its probably a muscle tear.. told me to take pain killers and put an ice pack on the knee where it is swollen.

But, I can not bend my knee fully otherwise it hurts and some part of my knee are still swollen. I can walk on it but it hurts when I go on steps.

Any ideas what it might be guys?

Thanks in advance.

Get an ultrasound and a new doctor

Get a second, professional opinion if you're concerned. Don't ask us.

Hiiiii everrybodeee. You ve tried the best now try the rest. The knee bone's connected to the…something. The something's connected to the…red thing. The red thing's connected to my…wrist watch. Uh oh.

Sir, calm down, you're going to give yourself skin failure. The symptoms you describe lead me to believe that you are suffering from bonus eruptus, a rare disorder in which the skeleton tries to jump out of the skin. The only way to stop it is through transdental electromicide. I'll need a golf cart motor and a thousand volt capacimator, stat.

When I tore my knee ligaments (also soccer) my GP initially took an X-Ray, told me it was fine and to wait for the swelling to go down. I wasn't convinced so I went to a specialist and got a MRI done at which point we discovered there was serious damage and I had a knee recon some 6 months later; that should be your next step (getting a MRI) if you really want to find out what it is.

thank your for this..first thing tomorrow morning il see a new dr. and get a MRI done..can you walk the same as you used to afte the operation?

      • I was able to walk fine after a month or so once the swelling went down. You don't need a knee recon to walk normally, but you will need one if you want to play sport again as you lose the ability to turn sharply and stop quickly.

I could actually run in a straight line before my knee recon, I was in no pain and no swelling, however if I had tried to turn sharply or sprint and stop quickly my knee would give way. My orthopaedic specialist who ended up doing my surgery told me that a knee recon was optional but recommended, but I'd have to accept I couldn't play most sports again without it done.

This is just my unqualified advice from my experience, the specialist will know better and may tell you something slightly different.

You will just need to get a referral from your GP to see a orthopaedic specialist and keep in mind a MRI is expensive even with private health so if money is an issue you would want to find out how much it will cost you and how much private health will pay. I can't remember exactly how much.

        How did you go?

        • I went to the dr.s afew days ago and got my knee checked out. He had a feel of me knee and said it is not the cruciate ligament. He reckons i prob.tore a ligament and he didnt think it was serious, gave me a anti inflammatory tablets to take and told me to wear a knee brace (which realy helps)..Its been a week since the incident and I am feeling heaps better but I am not fully recovered, still cant bendmy knee fully. So for the second time I saw the same dr. and his advise was to wait for like 10 days and see how I go.he also said u gotta be patient with hour knee and for now don't worry about rhe mra..but im still going to get a mra done when I get a chance.

I finally got my mri results and turns out my ACL is partially torn and meniscus has a very small damage. My Gp said it may heel itself but referred me to a specialist to have a final look at it.

Im feeling heaps better than before but still cant bend it fully. Hope im not going to beed an operation man..

        • @uAAu:

That's fairly good news then, best of luck with it. They may recommend an arthroscopy for minor tear, it's simple keyhole surgery, in and out of hospital in a few hours. I had it done on my other knee, prior to my recon.

Getting medical advice from OzBargain is not a good idea. I mean, it is a bargain since you avoid medical fees, but if you enjoy walking I'd just go get a second medical opinion.

My terrible medical advice: A knee "pop" is often a sign of doing an ACL, but it could be a whole heap of other things as well. Go to a new doctor and ask for an MRI not just an x-ray.

1.Call the bikies for the 1st doctor.
2.No brainer…go to a doc and get a referral to a orthopaedic surgeon
He will be able to tell u immediately.
    3.Get new friends.The old ones don't care

  • If you're lucky, the pain may be from the fat pad under the knee cap… However, you're probably not that lucky.

At the very least see a physio that specialises in bio-mechanics, probably even a normal physio will be better than nothing. If nothing else, they will be able to refer you on further down the chain.

Regardless, you desperately need a second opinion from a specialist.

      First get a scan done

      X-Ray Scanner

Then check out a relevant Udemy course

    Hi everybody…….. Hi Dr Nick

  • errr does it feel like giving way? if so then it is one of your ligaments torn either partial or complete i suspect complete
go to another dr for second opinion- a xray only shows you the bone integrity not other components like ligaments, meniscus fluid

However having said that public hospitals are usually quite good in what they do; and its only been 3 days
