Work Gave Me a New Phone and New Number. I Don't Want to Carry Two Phones. What Do I Do?

Work gave me a new phone and new phone number.

Ideally what I now want to do is let them pay for all my phone use / bills.

I have toyed with a couple of ideas:

1 - Switch my current personal mobile to prepaid and call forward all of the calls.

The downside being here that SMS and potentially other stuff won't come through. At the same time my understanding is that phone numbers also won't come through. Not really a fan of that.

2 - Dual Sim Phone. I have researched this and while it seems to be a possible option - my understanding is that you can't have 4G on both sims which is really annoying. Also - Data will only work from one of the sims. The other thing is I would have to outlay for another phone and that will mean that the 2 phones I have left (one personal and one work) will be just sitting there. I could potentially sell my personal phone but seems so convoluted.

3 - Port my number over to work's sim. Seems like it might be the only practical solution meaning that I can keep the phone they gave me - change absolutely nothing and sell my personal phone. The thing is apparently it will take forever for admin to approve and get this to happen.

Is there anything else I can do that might be a quicker / easier solution?

If you do 3, make sure you have an agreement that you can port your number out when you leave the organisation.

Just get a dual sim phone- why would you need data on both? Use your work sim data and get a cheaper plan for yourself.

Get a LG Fino $179 or Moto G $249. Both good phones for relatively cheap.

+1 for Moto G. Such a great phone for the price! I had a 2013 version and now the 2014 one's come and made it even betterer for the same price.

    • I've always gone with option 2 - my latest solutions have been the Lenovo S750 and then the Galaxy S5 G9008w. Have had to get both from China, but they've been certainly worth the effort. Not sure why you would need TWO 4G connections running concurrently….

NOTE: These 2 models were picked at the time for being the quickest top brand dual-sim mobiles with IP67 ratings.

Why do that. Just get a prepaid sim and put recording on it saying that your new number is…

    A True Ozbargainer!!!

If you call forward you will pay for the calls

and use something like these for SMS's

Or you could resign and have no more issues LOL

  • I can't advise on the best decision - personally I carry both phones which isn't one of your options.
However, whatever you do decide - remember that many companies track ALL phone usage (all messages, all website visited ect). In addition, many companies when you leave, will completely wipe all data that was on your phone (including any personal datat you may have wished to keep). So do consider carefully how you use the work phone/for what purposes.

you carry both phones. you cant port your number over to the new as the new number is you companies account not yours.

Work phones are a trap. I gave mine back and just used my own for work purposes. With the unlimited plans nowadays it doesn't cost much anyway.

put them together with a sticky tape. Voila, one phone. Problem solved. The end.

  • tbh i'd keep them separate, and have a voicemail on your personal phone mentioning your work number.

The problem is when you leave the company, they own the number, and you dont want personal calls going through.

Also, you never want to mix business and pleasure ;)

  • Set your work phone to forward all calls to your personal number.
If you don't have an unlimited plan, keep your work SIM card in your walls to slip into the phone for any long & expensive outgoing calls. Tell people not to send txt messages to your work phone number as they will not be forwarded

  • Had the same happen to me.

I just forward all my personal calls to my work phone. You can still see the calling number.

For messages I jailbroke an old iPhone so I could use biteSMS to forward all of the messages.

It is fine for me as I dont get many personal calls/messages anyway, but might not be a good idea if you use your personal phone a lot.

Could maybe do reverse - forward work calls to personal phone (as unlikely to be getting many messages)?

  • Keep work and personal seperate. I only give clients my work number. It is a hassle when you leave a company and need to keep telling people you have a new number. I've done the dual SIM card phone before. It's a pain! I now have 2 phones. After work hours @ 5pm I turn the work phone off. All weekend the phone is off. Don't mix work and personal and accidently take client calls after hours

  • Yatango has a 'pay as you go' plan so you can keep your mobile number. When you set it up don't add any call, txt or data to the plan. There is a $20 security fee when you sign up and that is it
