I installed this just weeks ago. After having visits to websites going from mere seconds to minutes + timeouts, I uninstalled it.

Visiting websites has returned to normal.

I have experience as an IT specialist, so I feel comfortable relying on my own investigative skills etc plus sticking to sites that are fairly well known.

Same here. I had lots of problems with AVG, and then went to using Avast (free version) for now, without all the issues.

Not sure why people keep recommending MSE, possibly because there are virtually NO parameters to configure so it's easy on PC illiterates or they're too lazy to do some in-depth reading:
      http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/latest_comparative/index

MSE's detection rates score well below other freeware alternatives like Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, AVG, Avira Free and Avast Free.

(No negs were cast during the creation of this post)

      • The people that recommend MSE are either Microsoft employees or their PC knowledge is very shallow. Bitdefender and Kaspersky have consistently been rated independently as in the top few in viral detection and removal rates. AVG has improved somewhat over the years but it is a resource hog.

Even Microsoft itself, admits it is only a "baseline"

AVG has got a bit slow and bloaty in the last few years, but MSE is certainly not the way to go.

I installed AVG and it totally stuffed my PC. Kept freezing and locking up. Uninstalled it and back to Norton (not everyone likes Norton but I do) and problems are resolved. I will never use AVG again.

    • Don't know why you got negged, I have had similar experiences with AVG in the past.

      • Peopl don't like norton so maybe I was negged for that. Sticks and stones may break my bones but neg votes never hurt me

        • Wasnt me, but you didnt do a clean install before using AVG?
You will have the same issues with any antivirus after Norton`s has been there.

        • i didn't do it myself, an associate who works in IT did it for me. He knows what he is doing.

    • was it the free version or something?

Don't know why you would pay for internet security in the first place regardless. Been using Avast Free Antivirus and never had a problem.

Installed AVG a few years ago and it was just a bunch of bloatware trying to get you to sign up at the end of the free trial. Its hard to delete and slows your computer down over time.

Yeah, AVG isn't the greatest. If you want free Antivirus, BitDefender Free is definitely worth a look.

    • +1 from me i used that for a bit wasnt in the way and didnt have popups.

      • Really? I used to use Avast years ago but it started getting in the way. I've used MSE ever since and I've never had a problem. I'll look into BitDefender.

        • i stopped using avast since it gave my windows 7 PC BSOD's all the time.

bit defender was nice though didn't hog resources and didn't piss me off lol

        • Using avast here. I make a habit of always unchecking every possible extra add-on that avast comes with and I only run the antivirus module. Think of it as 'safe mode' for avast.

It's a good idea to untick the additional bloatware you're not going to use. Avast is not the only offender, even well known ones like BitDefender also add in some uneeded stuff.

        • @holden93:
LOL, bitdefender gave me BSOD so i now use Avast….

+1 Bitdefender is the best on par with Kaspersky.

I run MSE, but honestly, it's not really needed. Good internet browsing habits are the best preventative measure.

Golly …….. that sounds like something my mum would say.

"Golly" sounds like something my grandma might say..

So "good" sites are never, ever compromised? Good AV software is like a seat-belt. You don't need it, until you need it.

Paid for free does not mean is is better than just free: Avast Free is the way to go - good on resources and detection rate is also rated highly.

  • -2

Just pay for protection goddammit, FREE isn't free in the long run… I am with Bitdefender no complains so far…

    • -2

Too many beers… NOT Bitdefender… Trendmicro Maximum Security 2015

  • lol avg.

  • Microsoft Security Essentials is my preferred option too and is free

Have used Avast in the past which is not bad too .. and doesn't slow the pc and does the update automatically and detects and removes any threats/malwares too ..
