Painters Damaged My PC Monitor

My parents have hired painters to paint the whole house.
Yesterday when I got home from work I found that one of my monitors has a huge scratch on the display (same day it happened, the scratch is white and there was white dusty fingerprints around where they tried to wipe it).

The next day my parents brought it up with the painters (and the boss) who didn't want to know anything about it. I haven't been able to talk with them since I've been at work. I've tried cleaning it with no success as it is too wide and deep. The monitor is a Dell U2414h ($399 http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=au&c…) and such a deep scratch is clearly unacceptable.

They are still currently painting.

What should I try and do?

Edit photo: The scratch is in the shape of a 7 http://imgur.com/WrNOARu

Update: After talking to my parents it seems like they have come up with a solution that they're comfortable with, I'll say what after it's over. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • Have they already paid the painters for all the painting?

    • No. Since they weren't offering to reduce the payment they might be inclined to dispute if they don't get paid in full. idk and then I guess it's up to my parents if they decide to do that.

  • I hope they have insurance.

    • Who? my parents or the painters?

Painters. They are a contractor, doing work in a client's house. Since they caused damage to your property, they are liable to pay.

Anyway, in the future, it's a good idea to stash important equipment away when you hire people to do work in your house, or if that's not possible have someone around the house to help with moving stuff aside. Don't expect strangers to be delicate with your household goods.

        • Yeah that would have been ideal and is what I did with a lot of my other equipment but since my monitors were on arms attached to the desk I would have had to lay them down flat somewhere and with everything piled into the centre of rooms there wasn't really a suitable place. I tried to move the out of the way as much as possible but obviously wasn't enough and should have covered them with towels or something. Horrible way to learn I guess but it should get sorted out.

Are you 100% sure that the painters caused it? You have no cats or anything like that?

    • As I said there was white smudges around it where I believe they obviously tried to wipe it away. I can't think of any other possibilities.

And it was the same day they started working in that room.

  • Unlucky man

    nice monitor by the way

  • Don't pay them until monitor replaced.

Lodge claim on your Insurance, State the painters were at fault,
Insurance company will recover from Painters.

Personally I don't think the painters should be at fault. It should not be their responsibility to have to put your valuables away for you, that should be your responsibility. The best they can do is work around your stuff and if an accident within reason happens as a result of that I think you should bear the consequences, not them.

  • I think it's unreasonable to have people hide away all their valuables. Sure a monitor and a few laptops might be fine. But what if it's a TV? Or multiple TVs? With the effort required to hide all that, they might as well paint the walls themselves and save a few bucks while they're at it.

If they don't have a few minutes to move some things that are prone to damage a few meters from the wall I think that is irresponsible. You can't compare the time to move some items to painting an entire house. OP said the monitor was not even covered, paint could have easily spilled on it.
