Best 4.5 - 5" Android Phone?

Doing a bit of research for a family member and I was wondering what the best 4.5 - 5" (approx.) Android phone there is now?

Samsung Galaxy S5
Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
HTC One M8
Huawei Ascend P7
Motorola Droid Turbo
Moto X

Not really wanting to head into the 5.5" direction, but if there's something really exceptional, I may consider it.

Thanks!

  • As with anything mate it comes down to personal preference.
I have the HTC one M8
Much faster the my brothers Galaxy s5
and a much much better build quality not to mention boom sound speaker which sound amazing, but the s5 has water resistance and fingerprint scanner and slightly larger screen and a better camera.

Watch youtube videos comparing each device.
there comparisons for everything now days.

  • the S5 is bigger than 5inch (5,2 i think) look at the full sized Sony Z3 (size seems about the same as iphone6 as its bezels are smaller than iphone). I got one for my 16yo son. It is a great phone, thin, light and full featured, battery is fantastic and great camera. And not ruined by nonsense apps like I think Samsung does. also is water proof, he has taken it in the pool for underwater shots (not that I am keen on that) but it is great from running water over it to give it a rinse after the beach or greasy fingers.
It feels a real quality phone, more so than the z3 compact.

the HTC still looks a great phone, only the camera stops me (going by a friend that has a M8)

    • The Z3 has the same size screen as the S5 at 5.2"
The iphone 6 screen is 4.7" while the Iphone 6 Plus screen size is 5.5"

The only ones on that list at 5" and under is the
      M8 = 5"
      Z3 Compact = 4.6"
      P7 = 5"

Nexus 5, if you can still find one.

Will be supported off into the far future, and is priced sensibly.

    • yeah personal preference but if you are looking for recommendation, I have never loved a smartphone as much as my nexus 5.

  • Iphone 6 is the answer. 75 Million people can't be wrong.

      Yes they can.

If majority always give us the right answer, why do we have Tony Abbott as prime minister?

Meh, iPhone 6 is alright, but by the OP's post, it seems that he's looking for a phone for some family member, possibly who is accustomed to Android. Since it's hard to move from OS to other mobile OS, i.e. apps you've bought, things that you sort of taken as granted that is not available on the other OS etc, I don't think you should bring iPhone up.

why do we have Tony Abbott as prime minister?

Cause the majority voted for someone else, but our preference system pushes votes to the 2 candidates who earn the highest Primary vote.

I was joking about Tony Abbott, though your comment does remind me of a mathematical proof that voting systems are flawed no matter what, unless you loosen some of the assumptions.

"Arrow’s paradox states that when voters have three or more distinct alternatives (options), no rank order voting system can convert the ranked preferences of individuals into a community-wide (complete and transitive) ranking while also meeting a pre-specified set of criteria. These pre-specified criteria are called unrestricted domain, non-dictatorship, Pareto efficiency, and independence of irrelevant alternatives."

Exactly @AznMitch, I am glad there are intelligent people like you here.
How can we have Tony Abbot as PM.
I am 31, never been to Uni, barely passed year 12, never worked ever, go to gym everyday, got an iPhone 5s and buy all good bargains off OZBargain most of the time on whim. Get up at 1 PM most of the time. I have been on centerlink since I was 16. It has been great life so far.
This Tony guy and his mob is trying to kick me off benefits (Well, i found a loophole in centrelink, as long as you are enrolled in a course, you are untouchable, no interview with centy at all).
I want Kevin Rudd back, I want another $900 or actually more than that considering inflation.

Hey would you let me stay on Centerlink for rest of my life and give me $900 every year for new TVs? Stuff majority, I will vote for you.

Edit, and this mob is telling me that because of previous mob we are paying $37m on interests everyday. Well, who cares for that? Government pays it, we "normal" people has has nothing to do about it. Tony Abbott wants to charge us for his debt, How mean is he?

Now the funny thing is that everything I have typed above is true… every single thing, except for bit of sarcasm.. and the actor is not really me, but someone very close to me.

        • The economic term for the anxiety you feel, is downward envy. — Toward the perpetual "student," others rich in time yet disengaged.

the actor is not really me, but someone very close to me.

And if earnest Tony won't put a boot into the lazy the nation will go into decline already. . but wait.

        • @daver: That sounds strangely like Penis envy… Just sayin'.

By your logic… android phone is still better then iPhone

Higher percentage of users in almost every country except for japan.

  • I thought Z3 is the best pfone outright?

Samsung gets slow and bloated after a while. And build quality of the HTC can be questionable after about a year of use.

Sony has most of the good stuff others have with none of the drawbacks. I still have a Z bought from new, years ago and it still performs better than newer Android phones.

  • As an ozbargainer, I'd have to recommend waiting at least 1 month (possibly 1.5 months) before buying a new phone.

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) is being held on March 1/2/3, and the big non-Apple manufacturers will be showcasing their new phones (and likely releasing them shortly after)

Samsung and HTC both have an event on March 1 (expected to show the S6/M9)
Sony may be having an MWC event on March 2

Even if the new phones are not to your satisfaction, the prices of the current models will drop
