Help with Fraud Contracts

A lot of my friends have their oversea passports stolen. The guy who stole these passport came to a Vodafone shop in Springvale to get an iphone. One of the staff did admit that was the guy in the photo which we showed but they refused to confirm with CCTV footage. We wrote couple of emails which contained the document Vodafone asked for. It took them so long to reply those emails so We asked them on Vodafone Australia Facebook to speed up the process, we fear that the CCTV footage will be automatically deleted. Their admins just deleted all of our posts. Can ozbargain members please help us the oversea students fight for justice? i know you guys used to "spam" Asia air in order to help a fellow who missed the flight from ShangHai to Melbourne. We've been so stressful these day because of Vodafone :(.
Please mod move this topic if it's been on a wrong one.
Edit: Not spamming in my case :)

Just so you know, we did not "SPAM" Air-Asia in that situation, one of our more learned/eloquent members did the lion's share of communications with Air-Asia (I beieve it was 'Tonka'), and saved that dude.

This sounds like a case for the cops; not OzBargainers.

    • I forgot. We did report to the police, too but nothing happens yet. This case is so complicating that we need support from public. The guy signed the contracts is hiding now. We can't solve this case if Vodafone doesn't have any pressure from public. Their staffs ignored us in their store too. No-one is willing to help us :(

It's not Vodaphone's responsibility to do anything, until the police tell them to. They only have your word to go on, and for all they know you are a collective of fruit-loops with an axe to grind against this guy. You need to lobby the cops to take action (i.e. to liaise with Vodaphone, etc.), not Vodaphone. Hassling Vodaphone, or attempting to entice strangers to hassle Vodaphone on your behalf, is not wise in this situation.

        • can u imagine they gave cctv footage to any stranger then someone on their cctv gets harassed and sue's vodafone.

        • okay thanks mate for the information. We can't do any in this situation unless the police tell them to :(. I know they got the fraud investigation team but i am sure this is not going to end well for us. We just need to watch our credit rating destroy or pay the bills which is more than $5000 (plus more $ for other victims) at the moment. Hopefully, Vodafone Will speed up their investigation or ask their team members in the store :(

      • Get your friend to contact iDCare on 1300 432 273. They might be able to help.

  • Was this someone that you actually knew?
edit: just realised your the same guy from the other post.

    • He met with me in person, mate. Showed me his statement from the police. Other guy just Showed me their phone bill with a charge $306 :(. He also got the report from the police.

      • Sorry I meant the guy who stole the passports.

        • Oh I see what you meant. Our friends knew him. We posted a story on our facebook pages and a lot of people sent us so many same stories. His friend also admitted that he has 2 unknown passports. His girlfriend contacted one of my friends and said to him that she would return the passport and pay for his lost but we refused because we've already applied for new passports and sent email tell vodafone investigate it. Plus when the police came to his address, he has already disappeared ( the owner of the house told us)

  • ok so youve lodged a police report.

have you got a copy of your credit file?

Contact veda advantage, they have a package that you get an email as soon as someone does a credit in your name.

The person you should be mad at is your ex friend who has stolen and commited fraud.

You have to also remember their are a lot of privacy laws that apply here.
Stores cannot just hand our info to anybody unless they have a legal right to it

    • we've already lodged a police report. We asked them to show us the signatures from our account. They refused. We asked to see CCTV no they had to wait for the boss. :( sad. The person is your ex roommate

      • Do your friends have any ID other than their passports (that were stolen)?

        • I think he knew every about my friends because he is my friends' ex roommate. One of stranger said to us that he has borrowed them their COE ( it can be replaced for visa)

        • @hihi: I'm not talking about him stealing other ID's too, I'm talking about your friends proving who they are to Vodafone so they will help your friends out. It looks like one of the reasons your friends were having a hard time with vodafone is that they had no ID to prove who they were.. is this right?

        • @jaybmate: They couldn't use their passports and Showed the student iD but no luck their student id weren't on the system

    • As far as the store is concerned the info is of the guy himself (assuming they had some other acceptable ID), and people have a right to access what information is stored about themselves.

      • We will try tomorrow and try to record the conversation between us and the staffs. I think they refused because they were busy and they just ignored us

      • "…and people have a right to access what information is stored about themselves."

This is not true in all circumstances jay, and in those where it is true, it does not mean the person has a right to rock up and obtain that information on the spot.

youve missed the most important thing here..

so there person who has had their identity stolen needs to.

    contact veda advantage
they have a package where you get a copy of your credit file straight away
go through every entry on the credit report.
they have a package that informs you immediately if someone makes a credit query on your file.
Assume hes done it many times.

    do the above asap

If you find any unauthorised credit enquiries notify the companies that have made the query and inform the police

    • Hi thanks mate for the information. I am not sure they need to check the credit if my friends have signed contracts before with vodafone or not. This guy just signed contracts with Vodafone and the persons who lost their passports had previously had their information on Vodafone system.

    Your not getting the point..

If someone has gone to the trouble of committing identity fraud and got away with it assume they went straight from vodafone to optus, from optus to telstra, from telstra to virgin, then straight to the bank and gotten a credit card. Then to another bank and gotten a loan. then to a car yard an bought a car.

This is why you need to check the credit file.

    • i got the point now. Thanks mate

    Good Evening Hihi,

Please do at least two things (1&2)being the most important:-

    1. Reporting it here in writing. https://crimestoppers.com.au/
There is also an area where you can upload documents to your report. (If you have them eg: photos or any paperwork you hold.)

    2. http://www.veda.com.au/
Go on and sign up to get your credit history report. You sign up to this for a small amount of money per year and it will alert you to whenever a credit application is made in your name. (This is mandatory if you think your identity has been stolen.)

    3. Don't go and see Vodafone, write to them and have them report the matter as well to police.

If the matter is related to cyber crime report it here. http://www.acorn.gov.au/

    Cheers now

  • The police will also investigate to make sure your friends are not a part of the fraud/scam. Lots of overseas students have been known to sell their passports for cash.

  • In case you didn't realise, fraud is serious enough to mean that replies to your emails will not be 'fast'

Investigations take time. Spamming will not help your case at all.

The springvale store is independently owned so Vodafone needs to go through different channels and there are plenty of departments to go through in relation to fraud cases.

"Spamming" their Facebook page will do you no good.

Your previous post in December suggests you seem to be had ANOTHER IPHONE "STOLEN"

Listen to those comments above you…

    • That was my friend's Iphone. Thanks mate i just thought they would do it faster. One of a stranger told me that it would take up to 2 months to get the answer.
