I want the 11-22mm lens, but even with $50 off it still seems expensive at $400… anyone know of a better deal?

Wait till Friday, new lens may come with announcements

  • Thanks!
I tried to get the $10 newsletter discount but they didn't email me fast enough.

  • New EOS M coming this Friday, but this is great price

    • Hope they fixed the auto focus issue for the new EOS M3.

      • Wasn't that fixed with the M2?

        • AF improved with M2, but still lags the competition by some margin. You can't get M2 locally anyway.

        • @ozscharfschutze:

Is M2 asian market only? And australia doesnt even stock any white M , i think they should fire the AU canon marketing team.

        • @ozscharfschutze: Interesting, I was looking at buying an M2 from overseas until I saw the M3 was on its way and decided to wait for pricing… When you mention the competition I assume you're talking Sony or Nikon - which models of mirrorless cameras would you recommend over the M2?

        • @uccoffee: not sure if the M2 was Asia only, but it never made it to the US market either. I read some research saying US consumers associated size with performance (i.e. bigger is better :)

@aok: compact mirrorless is pretty crowded these days. I've tried Panasonic micro 4/3 cameras as well as the Sony NEX-6 and the EOS M. The M is slow to focus compared to 3-4yr old Panasonic models.
I didn't like micro 4/3 because you aren't getting much size advantage over the Sony or EOS M while the low light performance is noticeably worse compared to the bigger sensors in the Sony and Canon models.

I like the Sony the best, the collapsable power zoom lens makes for a compact package that's good for both photos and videos (yes the image quality is not as high as bigger lenses but you can't defy physics).
I have other Canon lenses so the EOS M with lens adapter is good for that, but the slow AF is annoying. Canon also does not have a collapsable power zoom in its lens range.

OK, so 1st I go apply for an AE card…

  • Any word on the EOS M3 being released in Australia?

  • The auto-focus speed on EOS M with EF lenses is too bad.

I use this camera as a dedicated film camera, its perfect. The size on a small steady mount is perfect for tight areas and once you have focus locked its not an issue. Plus you can hack it with Magic Lantern and get audio levels, zebra etc. Makes for a cheap setup.

      • That's what I bought mine for, but I'm just learning… have you managed to use an external monitor? (I was disappointed that I couldn't use my Nexus 7 and DSLR Controller like people can on the 650d)
        Audio monitoring via headphone?
(I suspect neither is possible, but may as well ask!)
How about an external mic like the Rode Videomic Pro? (theoretically fine, but just wondering what the results are actually like)
Have you tried many of the EF-M lenses (I have the 22mm and the 18-55mm).
Any other tips for video? :)

I always use my Rode Stereo VideoMic for basic ambient sound recording but I also connect a wireless mic (Sennheiser) for interviews and main dialogue. According to Magic Lantern you can do an audio feedback loop through the AV cable that comes with the camera and an adapter to go from AV to headphone but i could never get it to work so i just use the visual level indicators and manual sound setting and it has been great.

Not currently using an external monitor, been pretty good at focusing on main screen. I have the 22mm EF-M lens which I use now and then but I tend though to use my 24-105 F4 IS for the IS. I would like to get a good IS wide lens just for smooth filming, IS makes a huge difference.

Have you got a simple steady mount? I just bought a single handed, shoulder rest anodised aluminium one off ebay for $100, makes a world of difference. You can then mount lighting, adapters, monopod, mics etc off it also. I got a few spare batteries also I carry with camera always.

I turn up to a shoot with my EOS M, lens, mic and shoulder steady in small bag and people go, 'Where's you camera?' Oh how i love technology.

        • @clarky: Awesome, thanks for the info! I'll PM you to avoid derailing the thread too much :)

      • I use this camera as a dedicated film camera, its perfect.

Where do you load the film?

        • Hmmmm

  • Sorry if slightly off-topic - would anyone have any comments on how the Sony A5100 compares to this EOS M?

I currently use my EOS M with the 22mm EF-M pancake lens as a travel camera, and find the output quite amazing. However, the slow focusing really annoys me in usage, so I'm looking at the Sony A5100 as a possible replacement (which apparently has a fast focusing system).

But the 16-50mm power zoom kit lens (f/3.5-5.6) on the Sony doesn't seem to be well-reviewed, and it's nowhere near as 'bright'/'fast' as the Canon 22mm lens (f/2). So on paper, I would be losing image quality, low light capability and depth-of-field effect by going to the Sony, but gain a wider field of view (which I like). However, I know that in real-life usage there are many other variables to consider, which makes it harder to decide.

If anyone has any advice/feedback on this, it would be very helpful!

  • Tempting price but I'm expecting this to get cheaper still

    • Cheaper than $264? The $50 cashback ends on the 16th. Are you sure they won't just stop selling it?

      • I have no idea, it may just disappear. Just guessing that someone, local or grey, will sell them off for even less in the near future

  • Should put the new Canon EF 11-24 f/4L USM lens on it :D

  • Thanks OP.
    Just pick one up.
AF isn't too bad. The reviews on this was prior to the firmware update which from my understanding addressed the AF issue.
Great quality photos with my 50mm 1.4 plugged on it.
