Stirling Robot Vacuum Cleaner $119 was $179 @ Aldi Tarneit, VIC

50

Saw them at my local Aldi. They've reduced the price by one third. About 15 units left when I bought it. Detailed specs here

I know it's not the best robot vacuum cleaner. Two of my friends bought it and they're happy with it. However they've not used iRobot Roomba or anything similar, so they don't have a base for comparison. It come with THREE YEARS WARRANTY. So that was a factor for my purchasing decision. You can always return it if not satisfied to Aldi. For $119 there's not much to loose.

We've had one for just under a year…

When it works, it cleans more or less ok, though it's not fantastic on carpet/mats. It is great for keeping pet hair and crumbs in check on hard surfaces, however. The logic in them isn't spectacular, ours regularly gets 'trapped' by furniture as it navigates around and it only finds its way back to the charging station about a third of the time. It has a bad habit of running into furniture with quite a thump, so it will eventually leave marks on anything at ground level (like my Infinity speakers that now have a lovely thick 'line' across the front of the covers).

They don't hold much in the dustbin, we find it needs to be emptied at least every second run of the house. The filters require cleaning at least this often as well. It also gets its working parts gummed up with hair and what-not about once a week, you have to remove all the moving parts (which is thankfully fairly simple) and give it a thorough clean when this happens. This makes the programmable timer largely useless, as if you're gone for a couple of weeks, the thing will gum itself up and die in a corner while you're away, if it's set to auto-run every couple of days.

Just recently the battery has gone from its normal run of 2+ hours to only lasting between a half and 1 hour. Then yesterday the sweeper brush on the front of it stopped working. We pulled it completely apart and cleaned it, but it still doesn't work, so we suspect a gear has stripped. Also just recently, the UV lamp on the underside has intermittently not been working. The build quality of them isn't going to blow you away. I think we'll look around for something a bit better, though this has certainly saved us a lot of manual labour.

      • Interesting! Mine doesn't run into furniture… its sensors work quite well and it stops millimeters before making physical contact. It'll only run into things if they're really low with flat bases.. like my cat scatching pole has a flat base with three poles sticking out of it - the robot runs over the base and rams into the poles for some reason lol.

Agreed about the dustbin, it doesn't hold much. I empty it a few times during each run of the house/room. Ditto with the rollers etc, I clean out the hair (my hair is long, I seem to moult as much as my pets, so I have to use my normal vacuum amusingly enough, to suck up any knotted up hair/fur/carpet/rug stuff in the rollers - I have pets that scratch up my long carpets.. yay.. but the robot cleans it all up wonderfully).

I haven't noticed any decline in battery charge or any other parts though. I bought mine in mid 2014, use it weekly on really thick shaggy carpet, with the UV thing on always. Only thing I've noticed is the rubber roller has nearly worn down to nothing :/ So thats obviously low quality, but I'm not too bothered personally as I figured the brush roller would do most of the work on carpet anyway. But yeah - quality overall isn't mindblowing as you say! I guess you get what you pay for :)

It's probably good as a back up vacuum for spaces you can't get to with you regular vacuum, or to pull out when you don't have time to give your place a proper vacuum… in which case you probably don't want to fork out hundreds for a fancy pants high end model (which you might get if you rely on it entirely to do all the house vacuuming). Mine is just used now and then for some spots… the rest is done with the proper vac. Hence it hasn't been such a waste getting a cheapo one.

So far I've been happy. Would buy another easily.

  • I really want a Robot Vacumm

Was looking at a Samsung Powebot VR9000

  • Thanks for the info. We have one that bought about 1.5 years ago. The battery has died. Didn't relies they have three year warranty. Going to see if I can claim it.

Did an ok job I guess when it was working

  • Pity no store in SA.

  • These are great for ozbargainers that are after a gadget and not the vacuum cleaner

  • I've had this robot for almost a year now. Love it. Sucks up fine pet hair from my thick shaggy carpet really well. I have a rug as well which it does get stuck on, purely because it sucks up the corners of the rug and then gets jammed, and needs rescuing.. so that's a pain (my rug's corners curl upwards normally anyway, cheapo rug.. if I flatten it out properly before letting the robot run… it's fine, doesn't get stuck).

Apart from that issue, I watch it and it does do a thorough job of each room. I just let it go until the battery runs out (I don't have the wall charger set up, so it literally runs until it beeps / battery dies).

  • Neato all the way

  • Anyone seen these around Sydney?
