Only a few upvotes but plenty more people using the discount?

Hi folks

I'm kinda new to OzBargain,so please don't bite.

Some feedback:

We released our biggest ever bargain exclusively on Ozbargain:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/181661#comment-2549768

We're a bit disappointed that we only have 8 upvotes, and yet the coupon has been used in 24 orders!
Here's proof:
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0372/5673/files/ozbargain.…

I figured that perhaps the coupon has been shared on other 'bargain' websites, but not so, according to the report on traffic to our website today:
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0372/5673/files/referals.J…
163 referals from Ozbargain,
6 from Facebook.

Edit: Some great responses from everyone. Thank you. It must be the need to register in order to vote. I'll keep that in mind going forward. :)

When you buy and sell lots of items on ebay not everyone leaves feedback.
    it's the same thing here.
some people forget or just don't bother.
i know i used ozbargain alot before i made an account to be part of the ozbargain community and obviously didnt +1 on the deals i took advantage of.

Btw next time maybe post what your product is.
I just clicked your website and all i know now is that it's some sort of meat (i think) lol

    • Thank-you for the feedback. Those are very good points. Like you say most likely they don't have an account. I'll try and put some info about what the product is. Thanks!

Only those who have registered with Ozbargain can up vote, but everyone can view it, it could just be those other 16 people don't have an Ozbargain account. Or that people can't be bothered signing in especially if they're on their phones. Don't take it to heart :)

The only people who up vote deals on Ozbargain are registered members of the site. I am going to assume that guests to Ozbargain probably clicked on and used your code and could not up vote due to not joining the website.

I recommend increasing the discount next time if you would like enough up votes to reach the front page and increase orders from Ozbargain deal.

If your deal does make front page; then it will be posted on the Ozbargain Facebook page and other blogs further increasing traffic to your site.

Yeah definitely don't take it to heart.

A lot of store reps get 0 sales from their "deals" but yours was decent enough to warrant 24 orders.

I'd be happy with that if I were you.

Hey biltong2go, i don't work for ozbargain, but i'm an ex-mod (so take it as you will).

The majority of ozbargain visitors don't have an account, or don't log in to view deals. You can only vote by logging in, hence the votes may not be a representation of the number of people who have taken advantage of the deal (to view/use the deal you do NOT have to be a member). Also, many people will click through anyway, as you've seen the number of viewers generally means more purchases, but it's not a guarantee.

Thanks for posting, hopefully you'll post again as there appears to be some interest. People are skeptical of new store posts, so tbh, getting 8-10 positive votes on your first go is quite good.

Also, make sure you read the rules about sockpuppeting, and make sure staff don't vote up deals (or astroturf), it's the quickest way to get the company banned.

    welcome

      Thanks Davo!
Yeah we definitely love OzBargain so we'll definitely be back at some point in the future. I also use OzBargain personally especially when I find a bargain that's a bit cryptic or sketchy (like some of eBay's last year).
Thanks for the feedback, indeed it must be that people couldn't vote because they weren't registered. I feel like our bargain is 'lost' deep within the site because it needs more votes but as you can see it is getting a fair amount of attention so I can't complain.
I'll keep this in mind for the future - I may put a one-liner politely encouraging people to register if they like the bargain.

Basically what has already been said — there are a lot of readers here on OzBargain who take advantage of the deals posted but never bothered to log in and vote, comment or contribute themselves.

On the other hand 24 orders aren't really that much for a community with thousands of users online at the same time.

    Good luck!

    • Thanks scotty!

Welcome Biltong2Go. I don't know how much this affects Ozbargain in general, but a housemate put an order in on this deal. I intend to vote when I have a better idea or the purchase process, delivery experience and the quality of the biltong.

This is because once a positive vote is made your only recourse is to revoke, which isn't especially visible to others who might value the feedback. By waiting, I have the option of negging or upcoming as appropriate.

Don't worry that I'm likely to down vote you though :)

Other new sellers sometimes haven't been as helpful or honest about turnarounds. The fact that you are asking these sorts of questions is a wonderful first indication, and I'm really looking forward to trying the jerky.

You think you're hard done by?
I had 5400+ click throughs and 7300+ comments on this post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/180774
Most of them are "Please join my league Code XYX555YXY" or some derivative of..
7000 comments meaning people do have accounts, yet only ~350 votes.
    Peaople are lazy asses! :-)

Wow! You're right… That is a bit strange.

On the bright side, you made it to the actual Entertainment page (currently it's the 7th listing) - whereas most listings get "buried" in the "new" tab where not many people see them.
There it seems you have the highest votes on the page so it's sure to stand out.

But I take the point: The upvote-to-click-through ratio is about 6% (only 6% of people clicking on the link upvote) but for some forms of direct marketing that's about right (e.g. if you send out a mass-mail marketing newsletter, some industries expect only about 10% of recipients to actually "open" the newsletter, and then only about 5% actually click.
So more important than the 7,300+ comments is the number of unique commenters which is much harder to gauge.

In any case, I understand your frustration :)

      • Just to give you more metrics, Analytics records 809 pageviews for your deal. OzBargain got 23m pageviews for January.

Pretty much what everyone else said is fairly accurate in fact we've had retailers let us know that they got sales on deals that have received 0 or negative votes. There are lots of shoppers who simply buy stuff online for a variety of reasons.

        • It's super impressive to see you doing all those reports and stats every month. Who knew OzBargain was so well run? Sounds like you guys have an amazing team. Keep up the good work!

      • Nah, couldn't really care less, more highlighting that no matter how good a deal, people are happy to just use and not "reward".
Having said that, I'm pretty happy that my post has smashed the previous comments record! Would never have known but for Neil's stats link.

On the other hand, I often (well, always) upvote deals and discount codes around here despite never using them myself (mainly cos I'm a mega-tightarse that never buys stuff… but shh)

Store Rep, I just gave you a +1. I really should give your biltong a go. Tried some once and loved it. The deal you've offered looks quite good.

  • +1

It might take a few deals to get going, but I think if you are a store rep who does actually reply, or give advice on their products or so, this is a great way to just be known in the ozbargain community. You only need to look at say 'mygroceries' or Mike from MEelectronics (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/110221) to get an idea.

I don't often upvote deals but I will generally upvote a deal where a REP is active, even if I don't buy their product.

    My 2cents anyway…

Oh and the rep for 'Iwantthatflight' is also another great example (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/user/102330)

Keep posting and you should hopefully start to pick up some more orders.

Suggestion, try a smaller size or a sample size that is less than $10 delivered, and you'll find a few more orders. As you know with a food item, people arent sure, and a $45 investment is a big cost if its not liked or tasty!

So maybe try some sort of deal on a cheaper size, and I'm sure it'll get noticed more and get more orders :)

EG Classic Biltong is $11.20 for 200g, plus $7 postage. What if you offered free postage across the store, purely from OzBargain? Might lost a couple of dollars on smaller orders, but might also get people ordering large orders?

But do a cheaper deal for a low-cost item :)
