Laptop recommendations

My mother in law is looking to purchase a laptop, and has asked me to help her research. She is 76 years old with limited computer experience and will be mostly just browsing the internet and Facebook etc. No gaming or music/movies so she really only needs a very basic but well functioning computer.

I have suggested a tablet but she wasn't keen on the idea as she wanted a keyboard and the ability to plug in a mouse.

It doesn't need to be super cheap just functional for what she needs :)

Thanks in advance :)

  • I'll assume her eyesight is going a little at that age, so I can't stress enough how important a quality screen is. (I have horrible vision due to a medical condition)

Of all the TN panels, I think ACER make the best.
Sure, color reproduction is piss poor, but the viewing angles and contrast are more noticable in day to day use; and 90%of their panels are golden in this area (no IPS, but still, good). The up side is there's a few of the V5 series going for about $700

But, if your budget can go as high as 1.5k, the DELL 15 5000 series, is gorgeous.
I'll start with its one negative; it weighs a lot (2.7kg?) but if it's just for desk to lap movement, it'll be fine.
The screen is gorgeous, it is touch screen, keyboard has nice deeeep key presses, touchpad felt pretty good.
If it wasn't leaving the house, it'd be my go-to.

  • Unless you love providing support - Chromebook.

    • Really? an OS she's likely never used before? I'm not sure I can agree.
at 80, and knowing what she wants in a computer, Its likely she's been using windows for the last 20 years.
'Limited computer experience' doesn't mean she hasn't been using the OS for a long time, just, maybe only one task.

I don't know if 'old age' is when you start trying to teach people a new OS.

From providing PC's for the elderly as a side business for a while; if she's NOT used to an OS specifically, use Ubuntu 14 LTS.
With the default 'UNITY' interface its the most friendly thing in the world; makes apple look like complex algebra.

I say that not on opinion and doing A to B 'what if' scenarios, but from actually letting the elderly 'play' with the computers and getting feedback.

      UNITY just makes sense.
Also, they are a lot more confident when you explain that "things like viruses don't exist here, click anything, just be careful if you need to enter details."

my rule was, If its on 'facebook', I don't care where you are, go to www.facebook.com FIRST then log in. (same for email, same for banks, etc).

Don't trust that this 'popup' or 'email' is actually facebook, go there manually.

it's a simple rule, and most people are happy to follow it.
