Travel Insurance - Advice Please (Auspost?)

Hi fellow travelers,

With so many deals on flights I got 2 trips planned already and probably will make 1 or 2 more in the next year.

Using Auspost for travel insurance will cost me about $800 (annual, worldwide, for 2, 0 excess) - which seems a bit expensive. Any idea how can I get a discount code for Auspost?

Or any other insurance companies offering better value?

I've been waiting for a nice deal, but nothing so far :(

Cheers,

  • Look at a multi/annual policy if you have 2 trips planned. Also covers domestic trips 250km from home.

I took the Auspost family multi insurance for this year. Partner travels domestic alot - plus an OS trip coming up soon (thanks to OzBargain) $300 approx

Have used TID in the past with 1 claim and no problem.

you unfortunately need to read the fine print.

Some really cheap policies, don't actually pay you much if you make a claim.

Saw one really cheap policy recently.

Read the fine print & if you lost or had an item stolen(need police report within 24 hours), the most you could claim was $100/item & excess was $50, so if only 1 item, them most you could get back was $50, but that's before depreciation !!!

Not even worth filling in the forms.

Also make sure cancellation for legit reasons is covered & what is actually covered. eg. maybe death in immediate family, but what is immediate family(there will be a definition somewhere)

  • I buy Travel Insurance from Priceline. You get 10% off if you are a clubcard member as well.

Being a clubcard member is easy. Swipe your card every time you make a purchase and get 3% (4% if you spend more than $100 per quarter) back in vouchers to spend.

    • is that www.priceline.com (USA site-didn't think they took Australian credit cards?)

or www.priceline.com.au (no connection to above)

never heard of them, but that doesn't mean they aren't ok.

It's all about who underwrites them.

Getting travel insurance from a pharmacy chain ?

          Whatever.

Is there anyone to ask questions to ?

I was only trying to help :)

It's up to you to compare the policies.

See the above link if you have questions.

Thanks all for the valuable input, still doing my research. Didn't even know that priceline offered travel insurance…

  • You'll find that Priceline is cheaper. I paid $71 for basic cover for 3 weeks in Ireland last year. Had paid $149 for 3 weeks in Ireland the year before that at Flight Centre.

Just need it in case you end up in an accident or in hospital overseas.

You can compare the policies online so it's easy.

    Hope it helps.

  • annual policies are very inexpensive when compared to what you pay for a few weeks.

  • I've bought onecover and virgin insurance in the past. Both were pretty cheap, didn't make a claim though so I can't vouch for their customer service. I think my 6 week trip to the USA was $70 or something.

    • Did a really quick quote with Virgin, Priceline and 1Cover (they covered slightly different things/excesses etc), and Virgin came out on top, followed by 1cover then priceline. If you take 10% for being a priceline 'sister' then 1cover and priceline swap places.
For a 26 year old, max 31 days o/s at once, $150 excess and unlimited medical, Virgin was $343.

doubt that all policies would be the same cover, so this highlights the fact that you need to read the fine print on claims, how much per item, how cancellation cover is worded & defined (saying your covered for death in immediate family is not enough. Some might define immediate family as BROTHER, SISTER, FATHER, MOTHER. Other policies might include grandparents.

If you took out cheapest policy & one of your grandparents died & you thought you were covered & you weren't cos the took out the policy which was $10 cheaper, you might be upset, when if you cancel you get nothing back.

      • You only have to be a clubcard member as you only need the card number. You don't have to be a 'sister'.

        • Sorry I used their terminology?

        • Just saying. Anyone can join :)

    Travel Insurance direct? http://www.travelinsurancedirect.com.au/

    Annual, worldwide, for 2 (35 & 30 y.o.), 0 excess = $524

    • Ive always used TID (Not that I travel a lot anyway) but yeah easy to do, all online and you can google discount codes.

      • Yeah, they are good. We've made a claim once, it was quick and easy, no problem at all. Highly recommended.

    • TID looks really great, unfortunately their maximum trip duration (for annual cover) is 38 days and my longest planned is 43. Will get in touch with them to confirm.

  • Check out Bankwest Zero Platinum credit card.
I use it personally - no annual fee and you get free travel insurance if you buy your tickets with your credit card.

  • I always use TID. Easy, competitive and they have a great smartphone app as well. Google for the discount codes as someone has mentioned.

Also look at using tripit for longer trips, you can send all your flight, accommodation, car hire etc emails and it builds a great itinerary for you that you can print or view on the app. Handy for making sure all your connections etc flow smoothly. It's free and also has a paid version.

  • I've always used AusPost though never had to claim, one oddity is that it's cheaper instore than online and can be as little as $5/day and the pre existing condition clause looks better than a lot of others. Never checked for annual price though.

  • I have reviewed and studied so many different travel insurances over the years to get the best value and saved a little bit. A guy I worked with was talking about travel insurance and how much it had cost him for his whole family to go around the world. I said bullshit when he said he'd paid about a quarter of what I paid for just me, for his whole family.

Have a look at AAMI travel insurance. It really was a quarter of what I could find elsewhere. I didn't know that AAMI did travel insurance but I'd never seen anything like it before. And it was good cover too.

  • I always use cheaptravelinsurance.com.au
They cover a wide range of things and as the name suggests it cheap!
I made a medical claim from a cruise that I went on and claimed just over $1000 with no hassle.

  • Choice magazine did an article on tvl ins in Nov 2014. They made recommendations for budget, seniors, etc etc. Japan falls into the expensive part of the world along w' the USA.

    • Few years ago, while in Kyoto Japan, my daughter (5 y.o. at the time) bumped her head in our hotel room, with blood gushing out of her head. Ambulance came and took her (and me) to the hospital (about 10 mins away), with TWO police motorcycle escorts, completed with lights and sirens. Upon our arrival, there were 7 doctors (I think some of them were student doctors/interns) plus few nurses waiting for us in the ER. (They even had copies of my daughter’s and my passports in their file!) They were so good, so efficient, yet thorough, and explaining everything to me in very good English. My daughter required a couple of stitches. We were out of the hospital within an hour. The treatment that we received was amazing. The total hospital cost … only AUD$425 I thought it was a bargain. Don't think anyone can get treatment like this in Australia.

  • Try comparing with SCTI ( Southern Cross Travel Insurance ) We've used them for a number of years now & always found them to be very helpful if a situation has happened - their prices are also very favourable both short term or yearly.

  • If you remove the 0 excess, it will probably bring down the premium significantly.
