Credit Card Frequent Flyer Points Value

Hi everyone

So I have a few credit cards for earning Qantas Frequent Flyer Points. I am mostly looking at upgrading flights for using my QFF points.

NAB Platinum AMEX: 1.5 QFF points per dollar
AMEX Platinum Edge: 3 Membership Rewards points per dollar at supermarkets
HSBC Visa: 1 QFF point per dollar

I also have an ING everyday account which gives 2% cashback on paywave (<$100).

Basically, should I be using the ING card all the time when I can?

Cheers

  • Yes. Points are worth fractions of a cent, even when spend 'best'.

Maybe if you're converting it to gift cards.

Upgrades would be worth 2-5c (2-5%) depending on the circumstances.

However in this case (which is also what I do, with the aim of getting upgrades as well) is take my 2% from ING wherever possible because that's a certain 2% in my pocket, and would rather that then the possibility of getting more in the future.

    • No.

If you are getting less than 1c per point in value your doing it wrong (gift cards are the worst for redemption rate).

Last two times I redeemed Velocity points: 2.7c and 2.5c per dollar (business class to LAX and economy to DPS in peak season).

Next time will be in the 2.xc range as well.

if you are able to put any business or big expenses on credit card do it, as long as no big surcharge.

ING rebate sounds good, but looking at less than $2 each time.

Points can be worth a lot more. Nothing worse than being just short of amount required(even after buying some from Qantas).

We use most of our Qantas points on domestic U.S. flights on 3 airlines or USA to Canada flights.

eg. LAX/Colorado (to 3 airports nonstop in northern winter) 12,000 pts + $2

    Vegas/East Coast 18,000 pts +$2

    LAX/East Coast 25,000 pts + $2

No fuel surcharge & if as we often do, connect same day at LAX, we don't pay anything for checked bags as international rules apply. The rule strictly is, if you spend less than 24 hours from arriving on your international flight. Same when coming home to OZ.

  • Thanks guys.
