  • Looking for a steam game to play co-op with a friend, can be anything as long as it doesn't have a steep learning curve. Any recommendations?

Terraria is a decent game that's cheap and always fun to play. It was often described as 2D minecraft, but I personally think it has way more contents. Also they sorta have different selling points, Terraria I think felt more like a RPG than a Sandbox game. Even though it doesn't have a steep learning curve, I think Terraria would definitely require bit of play time until it becomes exciting, imo.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed did feel like a Mario Kart game, but it was fun to play nonetheless. Though I haven't played Mario Kart since Mario Kart 64, but it had similar feelings to it. Also, some of the let's plays I've saw on Mario Cart Wii definitely reminded me of this game as well. So I think it's a decent game to play with friends.

      Portal 2?

I played How to Survive with my girlfriend before, the game is fun. Only problem I had with it was, it only gives items from the quests to the host only, even the important items. The game is a simple top down shooter survival game, where you combine items to create your weapons. You have to eat, drink and sleep to survive while exploring the islands filled with zombies.

Alien Swarm is free and fun too. I enjoyed that game with my friends when I was in high school. It's a top down shooter game where you and other people (1~4 players) "form a squad of four distinct IAF Marine classes" doing missions, "eradicating the alien infestation in environments ranging from the icy planet's surface, to a subterranean lava-flooded mining facility." You can add bots to take spots as well, but you need to use console menu.

      TF2?

thx might give alien swarm a try

      • +1

Alien Swarm is excellent. I'm so sad that Valve decided to stop paying attention to it after they bought the developers out. It had such promise and was so fun. Boo!

Also +1 to Terraria. It is absolutely worth a sale price let alone the full price. Put well over 100 hrs into it since release and do not regret it one bit. It's such a better singleplayer experience than Minecraft. It's a shame when people call it a 2D Minecraft clone when the singleplayer content completely outshines Minecraft in every aspect.

        • That game is still awesome. Though most of the people there seems to be newbies who started playing a day ago because it's free or those people who finished the game 5 times or more who basically uses flamer like it's fabreeze, killing the aliens too effectively. Those guys made me feel so bad about my skills.

          @AznMitch:
Honestly, the game could take off again if Valve promoted it and added a little bit of content. Maybe even add hats if it becomes wildly popular again. Give rewards to Dota / TF2 or CS and people will play it. Plz Valve

@kaneissik: Another hat for TF2? Yeah, I do agree. That game offers so much, and you can do so much with commands as well, like turning it into a FPS etc.

Also, I completely agree with you on Terraria. If you don't like building stuff, like me, then Terraria offers a lot more for you than Minecraft.

          @AznMitch:
Oh man, I totally forgot about the Parasite hat! The nostalgia is building up.

I'm excited for the 1.3 update to Terraria and also potential plans for a sequel.

        • @kaneissik: They are releasing another update? Sigh, I shouldn't have rage deleted Terraria after I lost all my equipments… Oh well, time to start over again. '

Also, yeah, that parasite hat did bring a lot of newbies into the game. I think I had to carry once, which is saying A LOT because I am awful in that game.

        • @AznMitch:
Oh no, a 50mb download! I've lost my saves so many times, wish Steam's cloud actually backed it up.

I was used to carrying, pub superstar here.

        • @kaneissik: hahahahahahaha, I wish Steam's cloud applies to all games. I've lost my savefile for Risk of Rain.

Anyways, I am so jealous, I was always the guy who gets those parasite thingy stuck to his head. :P

    • I would also suggest Torchlight 2, if you're into dungeon crawlers. But it's not on this list or on special.

  • +1

    Best games in that list?
Puzzle Agent 1 & 2 - so freaking awesome, excellent puzzles, creepy as hell vibe and story…

    • +1

My personal favourites are L.A. Noire, both Alan Wake's and all three Max Payne's. I've heard good things about Contrast & Kairo too. Gunpoint is a fun game but I don't think it's worth the price (it's pretty short).

    • Lol creepy? It's hilarious! Especially that detective!

But IIRC, PA1's demo IS the full game.

I haven't played many of the games in that list but I recommend Yesterday as another good point n click.

  • I saw Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments for $18 in EB yesterday.

  • Thanks OP, going to try The Vanishing of Ethan Carter - the trailer looks awesome.. I only wish more of these types of games were made :)

There are a few similar games that I'm aware of!
      Mind: Path to Thalamus
      Ether One
      Gone Home
      Dear Esther
      Dreamfall Chapters

Maybe this will aid you in future, enjoy!

      • Hey thanks! I am going to check those out.

On first play of Ethan Carter I have to say I really don't like it, sadly. I really wanted to. Don't get me wrong, its a beautiful looking game, but after spending the first 2 hours wandering around with no idea what to do I realised it was all glitter and no substance.. boo!
