Port Forwarding Issues with a TP-Link Archer D9

My Archer D9 arrived from the homepage deal from a few days ago. Performance-wise it seems excellent.

I play PC games a lot so one of the first things I did when I got the device this morning was try to setup port forwarding for all the games I host when I play with friends. Before today I've been using a BoB2 from iinet and port forwarding has been a breeze. After failing for a few hours with the D9 I called TP-Link technical support and they didn't seem to find anything wrong with my configuration. I'm currently waiting on them to send a reply to an e-mail I sent that had extra details.

Has anyone actually successfully port forwarded with this device? I feel like I may have just wasted $200.

    • Like I said, I've port forwarded on other routers before so there's nothing new there. Besides, the D9 isn't even listed on their site.

They use somewhat different terminology, they call it Virtual Server. See 4.14.1 of the User Guide.

    • Yep, I know about that. I feel like the problem may be occurring beyond the ports. The ports do seem to be open but when I try to join my server for a game like Terraria through my external IP address, it just gets stuck. In that screenshot, the first connection in the console is the connection from the Telnet process. The second is Terraria itself which isn't able to progress beyond "Found server".

  • Did you end up fixing this issue? I'm looking at this router and need to Port Forward too.

Might be a little late, but if anyone has trouble with port forwarding, upgrade to the latest firmware version (the one with the new UI). I did that and it worked for me.

The problem in the end actually didn't have anything to do with port forwarding. The problem was that I couldn't connect to myself through my external IP address. I never got that resolved with their customer support but honestly it's fairly rare and I had workarounds for it so I just gave up.

I haven't upgraded to the newest firmware version but will give it a go in the future when I feel like it. Thanks!

EDIT: Wait, I just looked at their changelogs for an older firmware.

Looks like they fixed my issue!
