Nexus 4 Owners! Have You Had Any Battery Issues?

Since having bought a nexus 4 back in 2013, I have had frequent issues with the battery rapidly discharging. Some times the battery lasts for days, other times it can drain in as little as an hour after a full charge. Often it will discharge so far you can't even turn the phone on or recharge it again, and you have to enter the recovery menu.

Has anyone else experienced the same?

Thought I'd ask here as quite a few people bought them when this deal was posted

  • Maybe a while ago, but not sure if it was because of an app. Recently my screen just turns black, but the 3 buttons (home, back) and the notification bar with the time were still visible, had to restart every time.

    • I get this too buddy. Trying to work out why, but it is not frequent enough to properly troubleshoot. We should compare apps installed via PM if you want to try and work it out together. Do you use Greenify (the one I feel is most likely)?

      • Kind of glad its not only me! Im happy to compare apps installed. I dont use Greenify though.
Im starting to wonder if it's a Lollipop thing. Is there a simple way to list all the apps installed, rather than typing out each one?

    • My screen turns black with nothing left a lot recently. Usually happened after I put it in a wallet or a case with cover. Had to press power+VolDn to force it restart. I think it looks like No Responding, but really not sure.

      • Same here. Blank out, no on-screen buttons, most likely crashed as no alarm either. Missed alarm a few times because of this :(

        • It's really strange. Never happened before Lollipop. Fortunately I've got a cracked-screen Sony as an alarm.

        • @killsophia:
          Yep me too.

  • I have audio problems on outbound and incoming calls. The phone wrongly believes that I have a headset plugged in. Seems to be a common issue.

  • My battery wouldn't last a day and that was with data turned off. Google replaced the phone under warranty. I was again lucky to get a day out if it with intermittent data on. Since lollipop update battery life us better. Suggest you turn off wifi/data when not needed.

  • My battery also last about a day. Bought it in Aug 2013. WiFi remains ON all day.

  • Battery always lasted a day if I'm using data. Otherwise it could probably go for longer. Sometimes though, it starts to overheat and the battery starts to drain and I restart the phone to try and stop it.

    • Thats pretty much my situation, except I leave it and then it drains way too far. I just had it go to the point of no return, and I had to manually charge the battery to get the phone to recognize it.

  • Yep, happened with mine previously and became progressively worse until someone stole mine. Moved on to LG G2 which has an amazing battery life and never looked back.

  • I found there was a rogue app draining the battery on my N5.

Rebooting the phone seemed to fix the issue.

  • +1

Quick drain has always been so related I found. Looks at the battery stats to see which app is draining the juice and kill it.

  • My wife has my 18 mth old nexus 4 on 5.0.2 and still gets a day on the battery
I always got the same on 4.?? and never had any mystery draining

    I upgraded to a nexus 5 - whoa such a great phone
Battery life is double for me (low use but always on data with wifi)
    I get >2 days atm - 2 months old
And faster, clearer screen, better camera etc

  • For extended battery life run the phone in safe mode and turn off non-essentials like Bluetooth and Data. I use this method in emergency situations.

  • I have the quick drain issues.

Also the audio issues with no sound on incoming and outgoing calls.

Long hold of power button does not being up the power of option.

When I press the power button to turn the screen on, the screen comes on for a split second and goes black again, often takes a couple of tries just to turn the phone on.

And I am kind of used to it nowadays since the problems are recurring every two weeks, I just had to long hold the power button for about 20 second to reboot my phone..

Seriously thinking it is no long before the nexus 4 would go to sleep and never wake up again.. And nexus 6 is ridiculously expensive, makes me think Google is releasing some kind of codes to force the nexus 4 user upgrade..

  • Having terrible battery life with mine. Can't pinpoint it to a badly behaving app. Just using data absolutely kills this phone's battery. I've stuck with it waiting for a new Nexus, and obviously disappointed with the N6 I don't know what to do. Can't keep using this for much longer though, I can't even leave work at 5pm on a Friday with 100% and expect it to last til when I get home at midnight.

  • I had this issue. My phone was still within the 12m ownership/warranty period. I emailed google with photo evidence of battery drain, follow their troubleshoot(ie. Factory reset). It took a good few days to cycle through all the troubleshooting. At the end they gave me instructions to send my nexus 4 back, took a security bond, and sent me a new nexus 5, then returned the security bond.

I was pretty happy with the free upgrade.

Process was pretty simple, but you do need to be patient as they try to help. I just took screen shots of my battery doing vertical drains.

If it's under warranty you can try what I did.

  • my battery life is so good these days. 4 hrs screen time over a 20 hour day!! The key is to turn off location reporting and location history. Turn location on to battery saver mode. Allow wifi to always scan for location (IMPORTANT). Only turn on data when u need it. Voila!

The phone has been so stellar since I allowed wifi to always scan for location…dont know why though!

  • hi all was using my nexus 4 almost when it came new in market had a few issue then was under warranty and got new handset was working fine for while but after now using almost 1.5 years around facing battery issue phone batter once died does not recharge and phone takes long time to turn it on and still have to wait longer to finish charging and also camera clarity also has gone to very poor, i have tried using different charger from s5, nexus5, old original nexus 4 charger too but still not charging ordered new battery will it work after replacing battery or phone is near to die? any one knows solution that will save this handset ? thanks all. this is just after updating of new android system i think!

  • lg hardware is not so good i think compared to others is this main reason ? had few issue to my freinds lg phones too!

  • well i have replaced it with a 2nd gen Moto G now. I get about 5-6 hours of screen on time with the Moto G. With N4 the max was 4 hours. TBH N4 battery is mediocre but i wouldnt call it bad. LOVING the moto g however, what a great piece of tech for Au$192!!
