Cheapest PS3 Repair (Optical Drive)

So this morning, I was happily playing on my PS3, until it froze. I reset the machine, and since then, it won't read any discs - Blu-ray or DVD. After putting the disc in, it makes a couple of short buzz sounds then stops, and it sounds like it doesn't even bother spinning the disc. Everything else is perfectly fine though - can play games on the HDD, go online, etc.

So is it worthwhile trying to buy a new drive to fix it myself, and if so, where should I get it? Or should I just bring it into a shop and get them to do it? (Adelaide, SA based)

My PS3 is a 120 GB slim, CECH-2002A.

    Seems pretty easy to do.

I would look on whirlpool for a reputable supplier

Keep in mind you can buy a new one for $170 (sold out, but deals always appear)

    • Yeah, I opened it up today to see if it was a lens problem, so I've gone through all those steps and reassembled it. I just worry that I'll buy the wrong part, or whatnot, and end up wasting $50+ as well as risk damaging other things, when I can get it done "professionally" for $100… though that also has it's risks of using a dodgy part that lasts 2 months and dies again…

And yes, you make a good point about buying a new one too.

      • or you just wait on gumtree to see someone nearby had their YOLD ps3 on sale for $40, buy it and take the disc reader out.
Or, because yours is downgradable to firmware 3.55, you can pay $70-100 for someone to downgrade it and install custom firmware and play game from hdd (technically it's illegal but you got the excuse of ripping out your own game to play on hdd, just like dvd jon did for his dvd collection)
