New Modem - Recommendation

Hi,

I currently have the Huawei modem supplied by TPG, but the modem wifi signal drops off when I'm a little further from it. Not really that far, justthe 2nd room down or upstairs the wifi drops in & out. So I'm thinking of buying another modem with better signal.

Any recommendations out there, under $80 preferably.

Thanks

You have Wi-Fi dead zones in your house. Sorry, but replacing your current modem with a budget $100 modem router isn't going to fix the issue — it may make a difference, but not neccessarily always better — it could even be worse, as not all routers are designed the same.

There are 3 different ways you can extend your Wifi coverage — either

    1. buy a wireless repeater (they're often called 'range extenders') this is the cheapest option, but is the least reliable. See discussion here
    2. buy a EOP adapter that comes with a Wifi range extender as a kit This is a slightly more expensive but more reliable method. May not always work depending on electrical wiring of your house.
    3. buy another router and configure it as a network bridge. This router will need to be connected to your modem preferably via LAN cable for best performance.
    • Not necessarily true… I have two netcomm routers which are essentially the same except one has VOIP capability. The one with VOIP struggles to reach the end of the house but my other one is able to reach it and even outside.

This says to me that different modems would have different ranges.

If you wanna buy a good Modem Router with better signal for cheap, then go for TP-LINK TD-W8960N, its a beast! - http://www.msy.com.au/peripherals/5947-tp-link-td-w8960n-wir…

    • You sure about this one, the price seems reasonable.

      • I used to get home signal at the nearby servo of my last residence, I'd often get email notifications when I was filling up. Seeing that, two of my mates bought this. :p If you buy this, let us know how it went.

Its so cheap that it seems too good to be true lol

  • You could also buy another access point, put it where you have poor signal, and connect it to the Huawei with a cable. Set the new access point to the same ssid and key but a different channel.
