Not an exclusive for iiNet though - same goes for Optus and for Internode: http://www.techly.com.au/2015/03/03/official-netflix-launchiā€¦

    • +1

Internode are owned by iiNet now.

Optus though is a separate company.

Isnt this a normal offer for existing users?

TPG Unlimited FTW any ozbargainer knows

  • … iiNet seem to have trouble (for some users) with iView being counted as normal quota when it should be quota-free; same users are getting iTunes out of iiNet's Freezone without an issue … I'd want to make sure it wan't getting counted - you could burn up your quota real quick otherwise

From what I understand of how they count the data, you need to be using iiNet's DNS servers in order to get the unmetered content. If you use something like Google DNS, it will count.

      • I wonder if this means Netflix on Chromecast will count towards quota. Sucks if that's the case.

        • +2

With some routers you can re-direct the DNS which is how you get unblockus and such to work with chromecasts.

      • Yep - I have only ever used their DNS servers… it is a known and as yet unresolved problem - I have an open but unresponded service request logged.

  • Noob Q - what IS Netflix?

A legal video streaming website, good for watching full TV series and some movies. They also produce some original TV series (House of Cards & Orange is the New Black being the most well known). It will cost about $10 a month. Because it has a big US presence it will work with basically any device you own which has a screen and an internet connection.

      Officially:

Movie and TV show streaming service.

You pay your ~$10 a month and get unlimited streaming of their catalogue in your country. You can even have multiple people under one account, but only one device watching at a time. Each person it will then reccomend shows in its catalog based on previous stuff. So if you watch a lot of sci fi, you'll get recommended other sci fi stuff, they've spent a TONNE of money on that algorithm. Other stuff like "you last watched season 4, episode 5 of a show, so here's episode 6!"

It also works on basically every device you can think of, including most smart TVs, etc.

Unofficially you can pay a few bucks a month to a third party (getflix, unblockus, unitelly, etc.) to trick Netflix into thinking you're in other countries, so you can access their full catalog of other countries, the US and England inparticular have big catalogs whereas locally it's expected to be much smaller.

In the US they worked themselves into being the biggest streamer, therfore they can get the biggest catalog through their bigger market share, so they have more then the competition. That wont be the case here immediatly, but Id say it will be over time as they will negotiate all new show contracts to include Australia, but for older stuff those rights are probably owned by Foxtel or such.

They're credited due to their low cost and large catalog for being a massive impact of dropping piracy in the US as well, as a good and cheap legal option came about.

Just a quick note: my netflix plan, which I assume is normal, allows two screens to be accessing content at once - not just one.

        • Ahh yeah my bad, I think they're all two devices but not 100% sure.

        • +1

Netflix changed the packages in (I think it was) early 2014. Grandfathered plans get the same old 2 screens they used to. New plans after that get 1 screen/non-HD on bottom tier (US$8), 2 screens/HD on mid tier (US$9), and 4 screens/4k on top tier (US$12).

Not really a deal - just adding Netflix to existing Freezone items (as long as you source the Aus version & don't use a DNS redirect etc.). Optus are doing unmetered too.

It's an awesome inclusion for them to offer… but not a "deal". More appropriate in the Forums.

  • Will need to see their catalouge first to work out how much value this will provide. I suspect that savvy Netflix users will find that they will still be using their smart DNS region switchers and that the majority of what they watch will be from regions other than Australia, which will be metered. Never know, their Australian catalogue could surprise.

    This isn't a deal.

It's not a bargain really. It's not available to everyone / requires an iiNet plan. Forum material.

  • +1

If you have tpg it's unlimited anyway

  • +1

Unlimited across a number of providers - sorry this is not a 'bargain'

  • Yup, agree, not a bargain. No discount involved, not available for everyone, not a freebie. Looks more suited for the forums.

  • Good to get the unmetered bandwidth. Now hopefully netflix will be good! I'll be getting it, can't be any worse than free to air TV that's for sure.

  • how much is it going to be here in Oz.? any confirmed pricing yet?
