Need Advice, Buying a four door Sedan < 8k

Morning Ozbargainers, I was looking forward to buy a used car for under 8 thousand dollars.Lesser , the better.
So I went through the forums here @Ozb and @ whirlpool but still cant finalize what to buy and where to look for it .

Today morning i went to pickles auction at Belmore and was disappointed to see most of the cars had starting bid of 10,000 particulary Holden Cruze and Elantras
I presume auctions are not for those who are short on budget :(

Since i am a student and live a bit far from city (my work is in city) so I have to travel a lot.
My only needs are

-Should only be a 4 door sedan
-Should be cheap to run and service
-Should be automatic
-Should be atleast 2006 model

I am not brand conscious at all and don't mind hyundai or kia as long as they are robust solid , they are cheap nonetheless

A few options I had in mind
1. Honda Civic 2007 Hybrid/ Standard one
2. Ford Focus Sedan 2007
3.Kia Rio 2008

I would love Mitsubishi CJ 2008 or Cruze 2008 , though I wonder if I would be able to source them in this price range.

VE Commodore, Though not fuel efficient. You most likely could get a 2014 model for $5k

  • Check out gumtree, in particular dealers trying to get rid of trade-ins. I got a '07 Kia Rio sedan for $4.2k with 80k on the clock. Granted it was a manual though.

    • Hows the rio going for you , how long you have had it for ?

      • It's going all right. Have had it for a few months and it seems to do what it says on the box. It's a very uninspiring car to drive though.

  • had a honda civic sedan 07 for a good year bought it for 8.5k resold it for 8.3 year after if I kept it until Bowie could've sold it for the same price as it slowly depreciates not sure about how fords are but I know Kia have the worst resale price/trade in prices

    • Yup you are right , but how bad resale value can be a of a rio bought for just 4200 bucks(talking about airzone's car)
Any body has experience with civic hybrid ?
I know for sure that standard civic is a reliable buy

      • Friend has the civic Hybrid. Great economy, but full battery replacement is expensive. I wouldn't be mucking around with a hybrid with an unknown history.

  • Toyota Corolla?

    • 2008 in 8k , i dont think so :(

A friend of mine got a 2006 Corolla for 8K just days ago, so you might still be able to find something nice around your budget.

  • Toyota Yaris sedan is the car for you.Very cheap to run and reliable. Check it out in Gumtree, I bought mine (2006) there.

  • There is a Camry on carsales, not the sexiest car but it seems to be what people who want a car to move around without hassle drive, so that should do the job:

it was in "Asian driver condition" :D But it looks like the bumpers were resprayed and it looks neat. there is another one but it is a 6 cylinder so it may be thirsty, and it's a private sale, I suppose it safer to buy from a dealer

Oh God, another car buyer. Prepare for a thousand opinions.

You mentioned Cruze. Something to consider is this, which was posted by another member earlier this year:

You should easily find an Elantra or i30 (but hatch or wagon) for 8K or less privately.

The Camry kanter linked to is a good deal if you don't mind the bigger car.

If you want something smaller, there's some Mitsubishi lancers for $7500: http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Toyota-Camry-2006/… http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Mitsubishi-Lancer-… and a ford Focus for $7,000: http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Ford-Focus-2006/OA…

    Don't forget to haggle :)
