Vodafone 3G Vs 4G Speeds

I recently got a new 4G phone from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/183190.
It came with a free prepaid sim $40 starter pack.

I just wanted to see how 4G perfoms in comparison with 3G, so I ran ookla speed test on two devices.

3G phone - Samsund Galaxy Nexus - recorded download speed 5.98Mbps
4G phone - Huawei Ascend Mate 7 - recorded download speed 2.23Mbps

Is 2.23Mbps a normal speed in Vodafone 4G network?. Please share your thoughts using the poll options.

Quick Update @ 06/03/2015:

The 4G speed test showed 36.42Mbps today @ 09:30AM.
It seems the 4G network was choking when I tested it on the other day.

  • I usually get >20mbps for my vodafone 4G in Sydney… does vary from location to location, but a majority of the time it is >20mbps

Here is one I did just now - From an Xperia Z3

Here is one I did on 22/02/2015 (during unlimited data weekend aka BS weekend) - Using a Huawei E5372T unlocked

    • thanks.
my test was done in Adelaide around 07.45AM.
May be I'll run another test in the afternoon to double check.

  • I thought it was just me being stupid.

I have just recently upgraded from 3g Samsung Note 2 to 4g S5 and I swear my speeds are slower now. Im in Adelaide also.

    Will definitely test out tonight.

I find that too many people are using LTE now which means you will have slower speed. I force my phone to use 3G & I get faster speed then LTE.

    • I think also think the same.
It seems that Vodafone has increased the 4G land coverage area without increasing the capacity on their servers.
Every new subscription or package upgrade got 4G enabled.
I guess we'll see another vodafail if they do not increase the server capacity to meet the increasing demand for 4G.

It's good how everyone is using 4G, people like us can keep on using 3G and get good speeds!

  • Depends when you live.

Inside my house I'm getting 3-4mbps.

Went to friends house, also inside their house I was getting 70mbps….. extremely jealous.

All depends where the tower is and how congested and your environmental surroundings and etc

  • Inside my house I get 1 bar reception on 4g with 2.6 Mbps download and full bars reception on 3g with 6.4 Mbps download.

Kinda annoying as I always leave wifi off as it recently starting chewing through my battery.
