Synthetic Chamois Versus Real Leather Chamois

Can anyone tell me which is better SYNTHETIC chamois or genuine LEATHER chamois for drying up cars? I have found on eBay that they are the same price. $5 for both synthetic (standard size) and real leather chamois (30cm x 45cm). Free postage too for the one on ebay. So question is which one lasts longer and does a good job?

In my experience leather all the way. I have a synthetic one and it's rubbish. The leather ones I have are considerably better. I guess the synthetic ones may vary in quality, but I certainly couldn't recommend them based on my (limited) experience.

  • I've read that you should be using a waffle weave microfiber to dry your car. I think that chamois are a bit old school aren't they?

I actually use large short-pile microfiber towels to dry. They sometimes leave a tiny bit of lint behind after a few washes, which the waffle weaves don't do, but I feel like they are the least likely to leave swirl marks or micro-abrasion.

You're probably going to be paying about four times as much as a chamois for a decent microfiber towel, but I think it's worth it in the long run.

  • I'm lazy. I blow it with my garden blower, disperses a lot of the water. Not perfect, but better than nothing. I don't use a sponge to wash the car either. Use my Karcher with the shampoo attachment. Spray car wash on to it, give it a minute or two then rinse off with the pressure washer. My Karcher is only a 1800 PSI, and I never use the high pressure attachment. Just use the standard attachment and so it doesn't ruin the paint job. I find it cleans just as well as a sponge and hose.

    • ^This.

I have nothing but respect for the ingenuity (enginuity perhaps?) of blow drying your car. To you Sir, I tip my hat.

    • They actually make blowers for drying cars. But garden blower will be much faster and powerful. The great thing is it is very low risk to leave any micro scratch on the car and saves time. Just make sure that filter is fitted right on the blower.

  • Thanks everyone, I went ahead with the leather one and I got the one of eBay. I will give that a try and see how we go. As long as it does the job and lasts long. Thanks again!

  • If you keep your synthetic chamois clean then you should be okay. The main problem with using cloths/chamois is that you may slightly scratch the paint if you've got dirt stuck in the cloth fibers or if you're too rough.

  • OP should be banned imo - sock puppeteer and spammer
