Holiday booked can not make it

Hi Oz bargainers,

I booked a holiday to Bali through Jetstar for my family.
Being an ozbargainer I went the cheapest tickets and now I cannot make the holiday due to work commitments. I was due for my holiday period then, but it has since been cancelled.
I told the wife to go with the 4 kids, but she said looking after 4 kids by herself is not a holiday. It is just over 2.5k in tickets (6 tickets in total over Vic school holidays).
Anyone have any idea's what I can do. Or just take the hit and learn from my mistake to book such a cheap ticket.

Thanks

Halve your loss - your wife could take her two favourites ;)

Is your ticket transferrable to someone whom she might like to take with her?

Get work to cover your money already paid since they need you so badly. You shouldn't be out of pocket for them approving then cancelling your leave.

Exactly, if they cancelled approved leave, then surely they should at least cough up for your part of the fare.

Then you can book another person to go with your wife, her girl friend or relative.

      • My company wont cough up the dough to cover my fare. I work for a Chinese run company and they have strict guidelines on what they will pay for. I had 3 weeks leave organised but we have a very important client they require my expertise. This client was not due until July but dates moved forward.

          Just say the work Ombudsman.

Work can't just cancel leave, you have a life and plan around it.

I'd press and make them reimburse or pay for bane change for someone else.

Agree, if they have already approved it and you have paid they must reimburse you. This is normal in my experience

  • No it is not transferable under the Jetstar guidelines. I did look at travel insurance but I cannot find anything that covers work.

      Are you sure?

      Passenger Name Changes
Permitted upon payment of the applicable Change Fee and Fare Difference within Change Deadline.
Name changes can be made for an individual passenger on a booking, but must apply to all flights for that passenger.
Name changes are not permitted for Qantas Frequent Flyer Points Plus Pay – Flight bookings on Jetstar or JAL Mileage Bank bookings.

      http://www.jetstar.com/au/en/planning-and-booking/fares/fare…

People sell their flights all the time on Gumtree.

      • Permitted upon payment of the applicable Change Fee and Fare Difference within Change Deadline: Based on this it is approximately another 2k on the current fare rate.
Am I missing something? Travel date is set for 25th March

        • Okay. Yes sometimes the change fees work out to more than the original ticket price. Go to Jetstar.com and choose manage booking. Should be able to get an exact quote for changing one or all names.

        • Thanks for your help. I will try this option and see what my outlay is.

It is possible to find travel insurance that covers if your annual leave is cancelled

      e.g. http://www.travelinsurancedirect.com.au/trip-cancellation-in…

But you would have had to have bought it before the leave was cancelled, and it only covers you, not your travelling party, so you'd still be out the cost of their fares if they don't want to go without you.

Can you get them to stay somewhere with Kids Club and book them into activities? + Send a friend with your wife as others have suggested.

Buy you MIL a ticket. Or your wife's best friend. Send them on a great holiday and go down as the best hubby ever.

Agreed - if tickets are still available and not super expensive, rather then wasting the cash, spend a little more and let your wife take a friend or your pool boy.

It is only a few hundred extra to change my ticket to someone else, I could always use some brownie points.
