  • I'm currently with Dodo that has 15% off electrical usage rates.

Previously I was with Energy Australia which the discount was much lower (4%) but now it's very tempting to switch back. Then again, who knows when they'll remove this offer.

    (I'm in NSW)

Discounts are quite relative on energy costs. Each supplier have different policies. For example Lumo will discount on both the supply and usage charge. EnergyAustralia discounts only usage charges. So let's assume you're a single guy living in a unit and don't use much electricity, your supply/usage ratio might be 40:60. Therefore having a discount on the supply is important. If you're with Lumo, you get 10% off your whole bill, whilst with EA you'll get a discount on only 60% off your bill. EA also typically have higher rates, therefore if like for like, if EA's discount was 15%, it might only be 12% for example if rates were equalised and comparing with Lumo. (All these numbers are made up).

The point is, don't go by discount alone. You need to understand your usage pattern and look closely at rates. No lock in contracts have higher rates than lock in contracts. The good news is suppliers are very competitive and will do everything to win your business as they know you can be a sticky customer as it's unlikely you're change suppliers too frequently. Usually a set and forget thing. Suppliers now throw in value-adds, have exclusive discounts, will pay out competitor's exit fees, etc. It's a very complicated product but all you have to do is use your old bills, get on the phone, and do a line by line compute of real-life costs, then do the same with a competitor. Once you have that data, you are in a position to negotiate.

  • Energy Australia will also update current policies to this discount and the $50 credit. 16% off electricity and $50 credit and 12% off gas and another $50 credit. No contact.

The worse energy company ever I have dealt with. I had direct debit setup for my bills from day 1. However, not a single bill had a successful direct debit. Every single bill came with an overdue notice and a lost of my on-time discount. I had to ring to get the on-time discount and made manual payments for every single bill. I left straight after my contract expired. I would not sign up with EA even though they might be the cheapest. I have direct debit setup with all my other utility companies and have my bills direct debited correctly and timely every single time. It is not worth your time and stress with this company. Good luck with those who choose to sign up.

Other people had direct debit issues..

EnergyAustralia was the most complained-about retailer (16,845) as per The Age

EA acknowledged their billing glitch with The Australian.

    • Our family should have added to that 16,845 list, but we don't like writing in, but can agree with the others that this is a very ver poor company when it comes to billing. Hours and hours was spent correcting a incorrect bill that gives one a heart attack. They are terrible to deal with, and do not respond back.

      Be warned.

  • I didn't tell you this but EA can offer up to 23% off electricity and 18% off gas + credit offer. 12 month contract. Again, they don't discount supply so these discounts are best for high usage households like families with teens.

    • They're already offering 27% in VIC.

      • Sorry I was referring to NSW. I believe each State have capped discounts, VIC seem to have the highest.

    • So you are a Rep or related to one? Source?

      • No. Speaking from recent experience comparing providers. You can call to verify.

EA's kwh rates are higher than AGL and Origin (at least for my postcode). So % discount they're advertising is misleading. I'd stay away from EA.

    • What about compared to Red Energy ? I'm with them and can get $50 sign up bonus plus referral credit

    • Does that vary per state? I thought NSW energy costs were regulated and the same.

      • No they are not. Check kwh rates of retailers. They are all different.

        • Thanks, I can't believe I missed this. Nsw energy prices were fully deregulated last year.http://www.yourenergy.nsw.gov.au

Just entered Energy Australia's Flexi 27% off pricing into my spreadsheet - for my area (United Energy in Melbourne) they're far from the cheapest. Do people really not understand that every retailer sets their own 'standard' prices and therefore comparing percentage off discounts across retailers is meaningless?

  • Not a deal for me, but it did make me change tariff plans with my provider saving $40 per annum. So a winner in some sense

Rang up my provider ( Click) they are offering 17% off the total bill. kWh hour charges are a little higher than EA, but as an Oz Bargainer I don't use much power due to the copious amounts of energy efficiency crap I have purchased .

    Here's a quarterly modeled summary

$/kWh supply sum usage sub total discount discounted total other

    Energy Australia________0.31_______1.45_______$212.40______$354.69_____ 16% usage______$320.71______ $50 sign up
    click___________________0.33_______1.44_______$225.24______$366.49______17% total______$304.19
    (apologies for the format

The winner is …………………… Click, giving me a saving of $12 per annum when compared to EA, if I reinvest the money into efficiency I will avoid Jervon's Paradox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jevons_paradox)and enjoy the saving.

  • Can existing customers apply for this?

    • yes, discount and $50

      • Nope, if you are an existing EA customer, then you can switch to this Flexi Saver Plan ( 16% ) however you won't get $50 credit. I just spoke to a consultant and got it switched from 12% ( existing discount) to 16%

        • My operator said yes to both $50 for gas and $50 for electricity. I'll check when the next bill comes in.

  • Currently with AGL, looking to switch as their rates and electricity supply rate are very expensive for a single person and in inner sydney. I use around 320Kwh per year. Thinking of powershop.

  • Not that I'm associated, but Click also offers a $50 dollar mates rate sign up, both you and your mate get it after 12 months. Other companies probably also have "mates rates" kinda offers
