Free Feline Adoptions This Weekend - RSPCA - Yagoona (Sydney)

870

Almost 100 felines hope to find their forever families this weekend, as the RSPCA Sydney Shelter in Yagoona waives feline adoption fees for three days only.

The shelter is struggling to cope with the number of felines in care after an especially busy kitten season . So far since kitten season began in September, 167 cats and 637 kittens have been rehomed by the Sydney Shelter alone.

“While there are 91 cats currently at the shelter, there are another 187 kittens in foster care and more come through our doors every day,” Sydney Shelter Manager Donna Hough said.

“Each cat is unique and has their own special personality,” said Ms Hough. “Whether someone is looking for a real cuddle bug or a more independent cat, we’re sure to have one to suit anyone’s lifestyle.”

All standard adoption processes will take place to ensure the cat is the right match for the new home. Information is provided about health care and new adopters have access to staff support with any questions over the coming weeks.

For more information about just some of the many cats currently available for adoption, visit Adoptapet.com.au.

WHAT: Free Cat Adoption Day
WHEN: Friday-Sunday, 13-15 March. 9:30- 3:30 each day
WHERE: Sydney Shelter, 201 Rookwood Road, Yagoona

All RSPCA cats are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, flea-treated and wormed. Please see our FAQ's below for further information or contact us.

I did not mark this as a Freebie, as a pet is a committment, and requires care & money for the rest of it's life.

This came to my email from the RSPCA. We have purchased a few kittens in the past as well as a few dogs from the RSPCA, & they turned out better than the ones we had purchased from pet stores.

thanks for not marking as a freebie!!

wish we could have a kitten :( we're so desperate for one …stupid rental places in Brissy. if you want a pet you pretty much limit your choices by 90% :(

I know technically it is, but it isn't. ;-)
Also, Hunter Animal Rescue are having a Picnic Day at Speers Point Park, Boolaroo (Newcastle area) this Sunday 10am to 3pm. Great way to find out about adopting pets etc.

Imagine a landlord having this tolerance with these 'kittens'

      Great but Sad story.

  • Also, there is a terrible story reported today, which I have posted elsewhere on the forum. In someways it's related as this grub should at least have gone to the RSPCA or HAR.

  • Great idea…hope they do one in Adelaide soon!

  • I wasn't aware there was a fee to adopt!

    • +5

It's generally to cover microchipping, desexing, vet fees etc.

    • +1

When I adopted 1 of mine from awl it was about 70 or so. My 2nd I had to get vaccination and desexing and chip cost about 500.
Not only is it better for the animals. It's cheaper to get from these places

Why is it always free cats but not dogs? Are cats harder to adopt for some reason?

    • +6

Probably supply. There's a lot more cats running around than dogs.

    • -7

Well slightly Off topic , you can walk a dog but u cant walk a cat.
dogs are more loyal. And dont come to you when they just want something.
Ever heard that girls prefer guys with dogs. (since there are more males than females)
      Pussy is never for free

Holding out referencing another term for this pet

…..and here we go. Bang on cue. "Cats destroy wildlife"…."cats are to blame for global warming"…."cats carry the bubonic plague". All nonsense and all boring remarks made by those who think it's cool to hate cats. This bargain is about the opportunity to adopt a wonderful loving friend for life and it is free. It's a good bargain and thank you to hbg for posting it. Really anyone who feels so strongly about banning cats in Australia should lobby the government or seek some kind of psychiatric help. Seriously, it's really uncool. And dull. And we've heard it on EVERY SINGLE post about cat adoption on Ozbargain.

It's a pity that the RSPCA have to resort to free adoptions. Having visited the shelters I can vouch that they really need all the money they can get.

      • +3

Indeed. The work they do is fantastic.

        • BTW I don't like cats, yet I currently have 3 of them wandering around my house atm. They make good companions, and are quite affectionate.

        • Bit wary though, after reading some things (like the whole Michael Beatty at the Greyhound Racing Industry Awards, wtf..) but anyway :S

If they are inside, they keep the cockroaches at bay. Not too mention mice etc.

      • +1

That's interesting, I didn't know about the cockroaches so I've learnt something today. We are getting to the time of year when mice explore homes. When it starts to get colder they go prospecting for food and shelter indoors. So a good time to adopt a new friend.

        • Some cats are great at hunting mice, some are not.

        • @hbg: Just the presence of them can be enough of a deterrent for mice. We borrow my mum's cat occasionally to get rid of the mice when they start to think our home seems like a nice alternative to the cold outside. She doesn't catch them but it still gets rid of them.

Usually passed down from father to son…'bloody cats' - looked at as perhaps too feminine, fussy, posh. Some people hate them because they had a bad experience while young with a bitey/scratchy cat.

I used to hate cats but after a kitten turned up on my doorstep they've become one of my favourite animals. So hilarious and interesting. Just brilliant creatures.

It's peoples fault that they don't get their cats desexed or introduce them into areas where they'll destroy wildlife and multiply like crazy. Can't believe I used to direct my anger towards an entire species rather than the irresponsible humans out there.

      • I lived in the country. I quite often had strays keeping me awake at night. I never fired at them directly but it kept them away. I guess people dumped them near the nearby fuel station. :-(

This is also available at other RSPCA shelters this weekend. Burwood in Victoria sent me info on it. If you're thinking of getting a pet, please save one of the dear kitties at the RSPCA. I got two adult cats from there and they are perfect. They often struggle to rehome adult cats, so I prefer to get those. Kittens are cute but they also destroy things more often and they don't really stay kittens very long - I rather save an older cat whose personality is already very apparent, and so I know it will always be the perfect companion for me :)

    free pussy !

Our old cat recently passed away, if this was in Melbourne I'd consider going and saving one of the moggies (knowing me, the ugliest, saddest looking one there LOL).

  • From their FB page comments: "Regular adoption fees are only $100 for cats, $50 for golden oldies and $140 for kittens. All of which include vet checks, desexing, microchip and vaccinations."

    • Our local Pet Barn has cat adoptions in the store and it's $210, so I guess it varies.

I went there yesterday at 1pm and all the kittens from the Yagoona RSPCA had already been adopted plus alot of the adult cats. The lady that worked there told me that they had 50 adoptions of both on Friday and 50 on the Sat by the time we got there. There was only a few pups/dogs and rabbits available. Seems this marketing helped them out quite a bit.

  • +1

Just went there. No cats left. I almost shed a tear. Good on you guys!

Apparently 155 Cats found new homes.
