  • If they don't contain wheat, are they really weetbix?

      Weet, not wheat.

What's so good about gluten free food and why is it prominently advertised? Is it supposed to be healthier for you?

    • How about you do your own research?

If your digestion is working fine, it will have no benefit. If things aren't moving right down there, it may be glueten. Or sugar causing fugus. Or lack of fibre. Or parasites.

There are 0 health benefits unless you are allergic or have certain diseases that can benefit from a gluten free diet. Some celebrities endorse gluten free eating which is why it's popular these days.

If you are coeliac, then yes it's most certainly healthier for you.

If you're doing it to be trendy you are just wasting money. Price gluten free bread, pies, chicken tenders etc if you don't know what I'm talking about.

it's healthy for people who need it. unfortunately people assume that if it is good for the certain people who benefit from it then it is beneficial for people who do not need it.

there is a specific term for this which I can't remember.

      • I make this comment not as a scientist nor making any claims, but as thought provoking questions.

Phytates and mineral adsorption anyone? Hybridisation of wheat with non-edible grasses? GMO's associated with sterility in cattle and unproven safety in humans? Food addiction due to opiates formed from partially digested gluten? Constricting cerebral blood flow? Compromised health of villi and nutrient adsorption? Overall suitability of modern "hybridised gluten" containing wheat as a food, considering the history and evolution of the human digestive system? Validity of improved health potential in respect to the already large and also growing base of professional athletes and sports people on high fat and gluten free Paleo type diets? Allergies or immune conditions potentially affected by gluten interfering with immunoglobulins?

        • You forgot to mention crop circles.

        • @manic: Funny.
I'd rather be likened to the existence or UFOs than be lamb for the slaughter.

Even if your not coeliac, some people have difficulty digesting gluten foods. Causing constipation. Food sitting and rotting can lead to cancer. But yes, if you have no problem pooping gluten, not eating it won't help you.

You got some good answers here. Everyone on the money.

    • Basically, No Gluten = No Carb. Less carb = less to burn to lose weight. And it makes sense why people are moving towards gluten free diet as many have lifestyle where there is less physical activities. I am not saying this is the solution, but it certainly helps some.

      • What do you mean? I don't eat gluten due to having Coeliac Disease and I love carbs! Potatoes, rice, fruit, potatoes- it's all good! Plus there's gluten free alternatives to gluten originals- pasta, cereals, bikkies, even weet-bix. There's so much processed gf choices that heaps of Coeliacs are getting fat.

Am I missing a joke, or is that truly ignorant?

Gluten is protein, which has the same calories per gram as carbs, but less than fat.
If gluten-free helps you lose weight, it is because it discourages you from eating so much excess, due to being less palatable and more expensive.

Also the fact that sanitarium is owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Personally I've got no problem with gluten, but I do have trouble digesting religion.

    • I only eat Vita-Brits as they are sugar free, just whole wheat. Last week they were half price at Coles $2.29 a Kg. This deal is $3 for 375g.

      • +1

yes, gluten-free is more expensive :(

  • Serving instructions for gluten-free Weetbix: discard contents, eat the box. It tastes better.
