Best Android Phone around The $400 Price Point? Opinions Please

You guys know phones, and you know deals! so…

Love my HTC One M7, but the battery is a joke now. Dead by lunch. Got a new job and fancied a treat - the m8 is a bit rich for me still, wondering what everyone thought on phones around $400? Ideally will be an improvement on my M7, but I love it!

Cheers

LG G2. It's <$400 and will woop the M7 in terms of perf. and battery life.

Battery is not replaceable though (technically it IS replaceable but the difficulty level is slightly advanced)

A little beyond your budget is the OnePLus One which rang from $419 for the 16GB ver or $485 for the 64GB ver.

Ideally you will want a phone that has user replaceable battery so you can continue using the phone for a little more than 2 years and not be hampered by the ever-decreasing battery efficiency.. That's where Samsung Galaxy s4 or Note II comes in.

You could also give your old phone a new lease on life by replacing the lithium cell but good luck taking the phone apart. Difficulty level — Insane.

  • second hand good condition note 3! only around $350

  • haha thank you, I did toy with the idea of taking my phone in somewhere and getting a new battery but I'm sure thats $100 anyway.

I should have also specified, to make things even harder, but the 4.7in screen is perfect for me I don't want bigger really. I suppose that narrows down my options a lot?!

Cheers though, will check the G2

Sony Z compact series. Other than that… I don't know of any other good phones in that size.

But the G2 for me feels very compact, it may be 5.2" but it's not that much bigger from my old 4.79 inch LG Optimus 4X.

      • I recommend against the Sony Z series completely, I dropped my one, with a semi-protective case and a glass screen cover and got a small crack in the lower corner of the screen.

After this the entire touch screen stopped working, some searching found that this is a known issue with the Sony Z series, when dropped and the touchscreen develops a small crack, the entire touchscreen will stop working (an OTP cable and a USB mouse will allow you to use the phone to retrieve your data).

I picked up a Samsung galaxy S5 for $475 that was approx 4 weeks old, might be worth looking, I did not notice a huge difference in size between the Z1 compact and the S5.

  • Asus zenfone 2

    • that looks like a nice phone! the new 1 with 4gb ram, jesus christ it's a mini laptop

An older one but I like my Google Nexus 5 for around $400 with two years warranty from Google!

    • agree with that - not really because of the hardware (camera and its software are very average) but because of the android updates. Our M7 is still waiting for lollipop - which (from memory) i think HTC promised no later than end of January

      • Google have really good warranty on their phones. They will even replace when your battery life is no good. I'm on my second handset (first replacement) since I bought this a year ago and even been offered another replacement because of battery issues, but I declined on the second replacement as they helped me work out one of my apps was draining my battery!

    • The Google Play Store hasn't had a trace of the Nexus 5 in a while now…only options seem to be Grey importers, and not all of them are crash hot when it comes to warranty…

      • It's a shame because think you need a good warranty if you get a Google!
