Looking for a Point and Shoot Camera, Probably Olympus

Hi,
I'm looking at buying a new camera. I'm not a photographer so I don't want a DSLR.

Would like a decent point a shoot.

I have my eye on an Olympus Stylus TG3 (http://www.harveynorman.com.au/olympus-stylus-tough-tg-3-dig…) but it's not set in stone or anything.
The TG3 feels solid and the photos look alright(to me). I like that it's ruggedised as I seem to break these every few years.

Anyone have an opinions about this or a better camera?

Where should I buy it that isn't Hardly Normal? HN seems to be the cheapest on Static Ice.

  • I like the Panasonic TZ series.

I have a TZ-10 which was their first one but I think they're up to -60 or something now. From what I've seen when I last looked at them it was pretty incremental improvements each time so should be fine with getting an older generation one for a similar price to the above.

  • That would be a good camera, even though a bit expensive for a p+s.
The only negative I would pick would be that it does not use AA batteries. Always best to be able to throw a couple of extra aa's in the bag on a day out if intending to do a lot of shooting.
With that battery you would be right for a couple of hundred shots anyway if fully charged before heading out.

These days mobile phones in that price range do a fantastic job with the inbuilt camera.. and you only have to take one "do it all" item.

  • I have an old Olympus tough. I only ever use it for the waterproof function now as a phone is so much more convenient to take pictures with - I agree it seems you can get by with one device.

It has survived a lot of knocks, and still works so I do recommend their longevity. Personally I don't think I'm ever going to buy a point and shoot again, just an extended battery cover for my phone to use on holidays, so it lasts the distance

  • +1

The Canon Powershot S110 got Editors' choice in Photo review.. This is however an old camera (2012 model) and isn't as new as the Stylus TG-3, but it will take better shots, and is more lightweight though at the expense of less durability.

I have the Powershot S95 which is it's predecessor and it's a really good camera — very pocketable, shoots good quality video and good for traveling. But without water proofing or resistance you'd do well to keep it away from the beach or pool.

    • yeah I recommend the S110 too. i had it for a while and was my favorite camera until i fell over with it in my hand, tried to break my fall with it, then let go and it fell in the ocean. hasn't been the same since. i had a DSLR before this, but liked how the S110 fit in my pocket so i didn't look like a tourist when travelling. now i have the nikon J1 but the canon is still my favorite.

  • I would go Canon Powershot for middle size or even IXUS for compact.

  • the digital cameras are also similar to mobile phones.
Better versions come up every year with new features.

If you have tendency to drop items then a shock proof camera would be a good choice.

But for $150 you can find a decent point and shoot camera which produce better images.

After long usage the internal parts get worn out and you'll be in market for a new camera.
My current camera is nearly 6 year old (a Cannon A2000IS) and just passed 10,000 photos.
It performed well for over 5 years until I dropped it (twice) recently :(
I can now see photos get little grainy.

I'd choose a P&S with better photo quality and price below $150.

  • Got a TG4 a few months back. I like it.
    Thanks for the advice.
