I Don't Need to Keep a Receipt for THAT

Recently purchased a bench vice from Bunnings. My wife holds up the receipt and asks if I want to keep it. I laugh, and say "It's a vice, it's not going to break." Mentally I picture a blacksmith banging on his anvil and having it split in two.

Three days later, I stick a steel rod in the vice and begin bending it. Snap. Cast iron body of vice snaps in half. I don't think I'm game to try returning it to Bunnings without a receipt. I also feel like a complete dill for having laughed at my wife.

I've made it a habit to save all receipts… Why dont you buy a new one and return the broken one with the new invoice?

Also, bunnings can locate your receipt if you can provide details…

yeah usually like bank statement (showing the date and exact time)

moral of the story: always listen to your wife

^^ This is right, not all that long ago the same sort of thing happened to me, I forget the details, but I gave them the details of the transaction and they were like "Wander around for 10 minutes while we look it up", and sure enuff, 10 minutes later they had the details.

That's the amusing part. I do save almost all my receipts. I just simply couldn't imagine a vice breaking.

      • Yes it's common with cheap metal foundry. I bought a small cheap table clamp ball pivot type for light work and it snap at the sliding rails. Anyway wanna buy a vice, support MADE IN AUSTRALIA http://www.dawntools.com.au/ You definitely don't need to keep the receipt for this!

"Why don't you buy a new one and return the broken one with the new invoice?"

Of course this works, but the problem with it is you end up with another of the same product that has just failed you. Possibly the OP would like to go for a more expensive/better quality vice the second time around.

Take it back… usually they are reasonable enough to recognise their own products. Worth a try.
I have learnt the hard way to keep receipts. :-)
Recently had an item fail after 2 years and 11 months… was about to throw it out but took a look in my receipts folder and there it was… and it had a 3 year warranty too!! Got a new replacement item with no questions asked from the retailer (Bing Lee, was a Logitech laptop cooler/speaker thingo.. )

  • Go back to Bunnings with it and say you don't have the receipt. They generally recognize their own products.
If you paid by CC you're in luck. Just find the date on your transaction and you're set to go.
I always had very good experiences with Bunnings while returning products.
And yes, your wife is ALWAYS right :)

  • How much was it out of curiosity? And which one are you going for now? I might need one myself.

I don't recommend the one woz bought

      • I have better experience with the vice that woz had.

      • Craftright 100mm Swivelling Bench Vice - $29.95. The same maker also does $8.50 as well as $90 and $94 vices. I wonder if Craftright's $78 anvil would snap in half if you hit it hard?

        • Same/similar one broke for me, but mine was bought from SuperCheap Auto. Moral, do not but swivel vices, their design flexibility renders them inherently weak.

  • All you need is proof of purchase.

  • I had this issue with an exhaust fan after my wife threw out the receipt. It wasn't faulty but turned out to be the wrong size.

I decided to return it anyway as this brand product was fairly common in their store. They accepted the product (even though i had opened it and inspected the contents) however they needed my drivers licence details and gave store credit only (which is what i asked for) on a piece of receipt paper.

I'd say a brand new faulty vice would look like exactly that, just try and you never know.

My boyfriend keeps all my receipts for me. He even scans them and keeps a digital copy of each receipt on his computer. I used to despise what he does until recently, we got out of a parking fine using those receipts.
I remember a guy said, I keep all my receipts even if it is just for a donut, just in case I was accused of murder.

Summary, keep all your receipts, they might save your life one day.

I scan all my receipts as well. It's easy and provides potentially interesting info for later. I can use them to track my fuel consumption, grocery shops and historical prices. Sometimes just need to know how long that chicken has been in the fridge.

I secretly threw away some receipt when the boyfriend isn't around. I also use cash at places that take card too, just to be rebellious once in a while. ( boyfriend has decided to boycott all places that don't accept card payment.)

I'm not going to give you any receipt advice

however, I have returned/exchanged something at bunnings without a receipt with no problem. just had to show ID.

Bunnings will let you just get a new one usually. What ever you do though don't admit this to your wife or you'll never hear the end of it…

    • Too late. :-0

      • In that case good luck :P

  • Tell them the whole story - they will have a laugh & you will get a new vice - no problem. Very competitive with Masters vs Mitre10 vs Bunnings - Bunnings always very helpful with refunds IMO

  • I have taken things back to Bunninfs without a receipt and have been fine. They usually just ask for your drivers licence

  • Return the vice, go to ebay and buy and oldschool vice. The old stuff never breaks …

  • Buy (or pick) wifey some flowers
