FREE Adult Cat Adoption at RSPCA Victoria

770

Fees will be waived for adopting adult cats (four months and older) in an ‘I heart cats’ initiative between March 11 and 19.

THE RSPCA hopes at least 200 cats statewide will find new homes over the next week.

This comes as there has been an influx of cats at shelters, centres around Victoria at capacity.

ahhhh man, so i can look forward to the influx of cat footprints on my bonnet, due to the influx of cats in the neighborhood!

    • +5

Gee, didn't know cats were into cars.

      • +2

Mine loves to help with car maintenance, by sitting on parts and licking my face. It's a great help. :/

either you're a cat lover or don't have any cats in your area…

they love sitting on a warm bonnet specially on cold days… they leave evil little footprints …if your lucky and scratches on your bonnet if your not…cat owners need to control there cats!

        if only I weren't such a loving person…..

    • and the roof as well :)

i guess there is less and less crazy cat ladies.

  • Not many people like to adopt an adult cat, looks like RSPCA has trouble getting rid of their stock.

    • +1

Not true. Some people would prefer a grown cat as they are usually house trained and can be less annoyance/training than a kitten.

Perhaps they have high turnover but have had an influx of "stock"? - If you want to look at that way.

My wife and I tried adopting an adult cat from the RSPCA. Actually, we were looking for an adult or senior. Our dog is adopted from the RSPCA and is a legend.

We went there multiple times, and each time were told no because we have children under 5. They wouldn't even let us meet the cat WITH the children to see how both sides would react. I understand that not all cats are suited for kids, and not all kids are suited for certain cats, but they won't give an inch. No wonder there's so many cats looking for homes, they won't give anyone a chance.

After wasting many hours debating with them and trying to convince them we would create a safe, stable and loving home for a beautiful cat, we gave up. Tired of the attitudes that came with it. Especially from one gentleman at the shelter who was a downright rude (profanity).

We ended up adopting a cat with no home from a small shelter, and he is the most loving, beautiful gorgeous cat ever. He loves my kids, and they both ADORE him. I can't wait to see them growing up with their beautiful cat that they worship.

(profanity) you RSPCA. You once did good work. Now you're a close minded bunch of gimps who don't seem to want to listen to reason. Bring on the downvotes, I don't care. I needed this rant.

we adopted one yesterday and they (RSPCA) insisted that we bring all the family (including little kids) to see the cat and spend some time with it. We were told that we cannot take it until the last child spends 5-10 minutes with the cat. Cat is great, kids love her. Probably staff member misread the policy or there were other reasons in your case.

      • Probably staff member misread the policy or there were other reasons in your case

I had the same experience and RSPCA did not let me adopt the cat as my youngest was 3 that time. They said what if your child falls on the cat.

I just thought at that time what kind of bs was that and I walked out without getting any cat.

        • We were told "what if they pull the cats tail". Told them we teach our kids not to do that shit, and we have a dog we adopted from here that they both love and he loves them. Nope, every discussion always went back to pulling the cats tail.

        • Some staff members are strange. First we came on Saturday, all staff members were friendly and showed us some cats in the shop but we wanted to see more so they showed other cats that were at the back for some reasons (arrived from another facility/shelter, not feeling well) so we could chose one and put it on hold. But from Sunday another lady with strict policies stopped all that, and she told other staff members to stop telling about other cats and stop showing them, which doesn't make much sense to me as the idea is to give away as many cats as possible to good hands (places) and kids are not a problem as cats are smart enough to avoid/scratch/bite if something is wrong. So if I was told there that kids is a problem I wouldn't help them with taking one off their hands.

      • +2

Offered multiple times to bring the kids in to meet any potential new family members. They refused everytime, saying no to kids as a blanket rule. This was the Burwood shelter btw, might be different at other ones.

No other reasons, like I said we have a dog we adopted from there who is the most loving, amazing boy ever. We love our pets, and take great care of them.

        • +5

No the Burwood shelter staff has issues. Maybe not all, but some of them don't seem to understand what the RSPCA's purpose is. They must think its a cat zoo where we just stand on other side of the cage and watch the cats run around. Or maybe they love going on power trips when people line up to look at their cats.

Me and my partner went there once to adopt a cat, we don't have any children. We are both of asian descent born in Australia. There was quite a big line but was happy to wait in line to get a chance to have a closer look at the kittens, but the self proclaimed bouncer at the entrance felt the need to target us and make us wait long enough so we would give up and walk away. She would randomly pick other couples/families in the line to bring to the front and let them in first… after a few times we told her we have been waiting for a while now and she just brushed us off and said wait a bit longer.

I noticed she did the same to the Indian family who was also in line a few rows behind us. It became obvious what was happening, it was also a scorching hot day and no shade. This was until a nice family who got asked to enter the cat cage told the staff that we had been in line for a long time and we should get a chance to go in, the RSPCA lady was not happy but ended up letting us go inside. Once inside, she just left us and went to talk to other people inside.

RSPCA Burwood, I understand the majority of your staff are volunteers but they won't be doing your organisation much good, with attitudes like this. Sorry for being of asian descent.

We ended up going to Cat Protection Society at Greensborough and adopted a beautiful cat.

        • @jnwmaung: how about telling their HQ? Better still if you remember that volunteer's name.

        • @Yogapants:
It was 2yrs ago and I didn't get the volunteer's name as she didn't have a name tag on. Plus, its a bit hard to complain about volunteer staff.

I forgot to mention my colleague who is Indian had a very similar experience there.

I love what RSPCA does and admire the org but it just takes a few bad staff like that to tarnish it.

        • +1

@jnwmaung: Fair call. Probably not worth the hassle as well. It's good that you shrug it off. Life still moves on without these people :)

I've adopted 3 beauties from CPS in Greensy. The staff/volunteers there are very nice.

After wasting many hours debating with them … we gave up.

Maybe it was because you hate Frasier Crane and RSPCA like Frasier Crane.

    • Down votes? Looks like your request backfired.

      • I thought people would get pissy about my rant to the RSPCA. Guess I was wrong.

        • +6

I just negged your post because I didn't want you to be disappointed.

        • +3

          @Wonderman: I appreciate the thought :)

    • I adopted my adult cat from an elderly couple who posted an ad on a shopping centre noticeboard. So yes, there are kitties in need elsewhere than the RSPCA.

      • Yes, there are, but if the elderly couple were on a time limit kitty may well have ended up there, and it probably would have broken their hearts to take her/him there. You probably made their day, just knowing where it would be going.

The house next door to us had a weird collection of renters, I think it was a share house with a changing population. Somebody in there used to keep getting kittens, did not spey them, did not register them and finally, did not feed them. Over the course of a couple of years my wife couldn't help herself and took pity on a few and fed them. When the lease ran out and they moved on the folks next door left their cats behind, literally packed up and moved out sans cats. We adopted a couple of them but couldn't keep them all so we had to take 2 x 3 month old kittens and a 12 month old cat to the RSPCA, poor things were literally just deserted when they left, one jumped the fence and started living on our outdoor chairs.

I hope somebody kind adopts the cats we took to the RSPCA as the poor little guy deserves a nice house with some people that care!

i believe the alternate title for this was "how cat owners think their cats sound at 2 o'clock in the (profanity) morning in the alley way near my bedroom window…."

    • Growing up, we had one family in our block of flats that did the same with budgies. When they eventually left (i.e. upped and ran), a few of the other tenants in the building checked out their flat and went into what we later ominously called 'The Budgie Room.' Must have been 50-100 budgies in there, they only layered a thin layer of newspaper but it was so caked in dried bird shit, a couple of saucers of water and heaps of seed. Didn't even free one when they left.

Seriously, aren't there eneough feral cats in the world already?

    • +1

far to many, but i dont see your point. all cats from these shelters are desexed and thus not adding to "feral cat" issues.

tho i get the feeling your obviously just trolling. there certainly are far to many feral humans in the world already…
