Optus Fetch TV + Entertainment Pack - Is it any good?

Like many here I signed up a fair while ago to the Optus Unlimited Entertainment Package.

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/182260

I am yet to receive the Fetch TV. Just after I signed up, they opened up the option of receiving the Samsung GALAXY Tab S 8.4” tablet rather than the 30 extra Fetch Channels.

Before I give them a raz up about taking so long, What I want to know is whether the extra 30 channels are worth it? What channels are you enjoying??

Or should I ask them to change it to the big home package with the Tablet?

Cheers

  • I find that it's mostly garbage, for me the only decent channels are the kids channels. The are a couple of BBC ones that have some good shows but for me that's about it. I wouldn't pay for it, but it's ok for nothing.

  • I like the ESPN, BBC and Nat Geo channels.

The internet is better and cheaper than my previous, so TV channels are a pure bonus.

    • Is it TV on demand? Or like Foxtel?

Would a $400+ tablet be better?

      • +1

It's just like Foxtel, but they also have a limited catalogue of free movies that change every month. Then they have a large library of movies you can pay for.

  • Yep mostly garbage apart from Kids channels, BBC, syfy, universal & Nat Geo. Funny enough, I was in the similar situation when I signed up and I rang Optus about this. I was told that the plan with the tablet doesn't come with Premium Speed or the entertainment pack, no Free International calls to 27 countries. I regularly call my relos to 4 countries in that list which used to cost me > 250$ per month now costs nothing as its all inclusive in the 90$ per month. They were ready to DOWNGRADE me as per the rep that I spoke to but then my free international calls & premium speeds felt lot more compelling to forego than a tablet. Btw, I have cable at home not ADSL2+

I stuck with the plan that I signed up for and quite happy with it so far. Fetch TV is good to record shows on normal TV with series link so I never miss out on the repetitive crap that's on Free to air. 30 free movies a month have a pretty crap collection with some good movies popping up here and there ocassionally. What I am using very much is the Movie rentals with some box office movies bit cheaper than kiosks and Foxtel. Plus you can stream content stored anywhere on your network to Fetch TV and the Optus Fetch TV app on Android is pretty nifty as well along with Catchup-TV which means you never miss a show.

If you're not getting the above deal for 90$ with premium speeds then certainly call and ask for the tablet. Cheers.

    • Premium speeds were not normally included so sounds like you got a good deal

      • I just saw the plans from Optus and they have changed everything once it gained popularity. I took this offer early Jan when it came out and mine is a combination of all 3 plans plus Premium speeds minus the tablet. Hmmm….Optus and their money making ways!!

  • +1

the Entertainment bundle has the speedpack (you have to ask for it AFAIK), so it's up to 100Mb down and up to 40Mb up.
Whereas the Big Home bundle you only get 25Mb down and 5Mb up.

There are also more restrictions for the landline.

the speedpack is worth $20 a month.
So 24 months=$480, which is more than the tablet.

  • the fetchtv channels are less crappy then FTA (we often watch MTV old Farts channel) & it's handy for recording. Also it has a Netflix app built in, so you can subscribe to that & get more content. Oh and many of the FTA catch up apps, so you can watch iview, SBS, etc on the TV.

The tablet is nice (I've got the 10.5" version), but you can probably buy one for a few hundred.

What i would be doing is asking for a discount for say $20/mth for the time you haven't ha the FetchTV box. after all it's part of your package.

  • Update……Subscribed to Netflix and Stan before Easter and can safely say that user experience is much better on the Netflix via Fetch TV than over Chromecast for Stan. Overall very happy with Fetch & Netflix and Optus for the awesome package deal and keen to flick the switch off Foxtel with these new additions. TV just got my uninterrupted attention now. Cheers OZBers!!

  • When I signed up they said a number of times the roll out team will call me the next day. Nope that didn't happen. 20 days and counting. There's more to life then waiting for Optus :)
