Good price for those who can pickup from store, like myself :)
      Thanks OP

      • Well, exactly! If you can pickup, it is a pretty good price.

  • I wonder how hard it would be to take the controller out and use it with a 3.5inch hdd. Cheapest 3.5 enclosure is $22

    • +2

From experience with enclosures it shouldn't be too hard as the controller is mounted at the top and is usually held in by a bit of clamping force from the enclosure itself.

However! There won't be enough power to power a 3.5" from USB port alone. Hence why all desktop sized external drives come with a power brick.

  • i pulled out the hard drive from my old acer aspire laptop (its a segate 500gb) do you think this would work with it?

    • +2

      Yes, it would.

      • does it matter whether its 3.0 usb or 2.0 usb? it was an old laptop, i don't think it had 3.0usb.?

        • Laptop ports make no difference at all.

        • @Poseidon:
          thank you Poseidon

  • +1

i have several enclosures for old laptop drives and one Patriot Gauntlet,
its pretty good both in looks and function.

i would get another one or two of these, im tempted, but its cheaper to buy external 2'5 inch drive these days,

    thats just my 5 cents.

Jonsky -> if its 2'5 inch drive than 100% will fit and work nice.

  • Great. Always wanted to get one of these

  • -2

I have one, and it's not a great enclosure. Pretty heavy (for an enclosure), comes with a small and somewhat temperamental cable, requires phillips head screws to keep the hard drive in place, and could scratch a laptop surface or something else if you just chuck in a bag due to the metal enclosure and very lightly chamfered edges.

    • +5

      What's a better alternative

      • -6

A different enclosure that has a screwless design, a better cable, and isn't made out of metal.

        • +2

Metal is good for removing heat from the hard drive. Being on the more heavy side will make it an even better enclosure IMO. Ordered 2.

    • -5

I don't know why this is getting neg'd. I don't have it in for Patriot or anything, but this is a product with some flaws and for an extra $5 or so you can probably get a better enclosure.

      • +4

Like? Give an example. I would love to know one I can buy for $15 that's better than this..

    • +3

This is actually very good and honest feedback and after using many enclosures I actually agree a screwless enclosure is much more convenience, I have a screwless metal enclosure with round edges so no scratching issue. His points are valid as this is a portable devices it is often put in bags which will make contact with other items and can potentially cause some damage.

      • +1

how is a screwless enclosure is much more convenience? will you dissemble it once a day or week or month or year? secured with screw is better than most screwless case while power on.

  • thanks op!

No stock in Adelaide and North Plympton.

    • +1

Stock is back! Just preordered one for pick up.

      • Thanks for that :)

  • I've never bought an enclosure before. How important is it to buy a known brand?

    • +2

its a bit like buying condoms. do you value what you are putting inside it???

      • +1

Cool, I will go with the unknown brand then.

    • +3

For reference, I bought a generic $7 Seatay enclosure on eBay, it's lasted about four months before it started not working reliably.

Having to buy another enclosure is still a better investment than buying another unrepairable Seagate hdd that dies within a year. A name brand enclosure should be the best option.

  • +1

Awesome deal! I've been wanting to get my internal hard drive out of that crappy case I bought at the market, this one seems to be much better quality for basically the same price (and that USB 3.0 is a must have!)

  • +1

I bought this same one last year, after going through a few different cheaper enclosures that didn't work properly.
Ended up picking this one up for full price and it works perfectly.
At this price, it's definitely a bargain.

  • Will second that. I have a couple of cheap generic usb 3 cases bought of ebay a few years ago and still working well. They are made smaller and cheaper than this Patriet model. I also have one of these Patriot Gauntlets and works well and verry solid and well made. It's a little bigger and heavier than average, so that is worth considering.

  • There is only 1 review on newegg and its 1 star, there is probably a very good reason they are marked down so much. If a deal looks too good to be true it usually is. Ive had vantecs last me over 10 years, so sticking with that brand i think.

    • +1

But not on Amazon though, getting pretty good feedback most of them.

  • Sorry for the newb question but will this only work via a USB 3 port? I don't have one so I really don't know if the power output spec differs from USB2.

Ie if I put an old 2.5" drive in, but only have USB2 ports - will it power it?

    • Probably backward compatible

    • +1

All usb is backwards compatible, but depending on the power requirements you might need a double plug for usb 2 because usb 3 offers a max of 900 mA but usb 2 only offers 500 mA.

    • Works in usb 2.0 ports.

  • Is this one better—- $12—-http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/peripherals/3719-patriot-gauntlet-25-sata-ssd-to-usb30-external-hdd-enclosure.html

    • This seems to handle sata and ssd disk. seems a better option

Stand corrected. Both seem to handle SSD

  • Does it support SMART?

  • Is it better than what ebay has? ($6-$10 delivered)

  • +1

BTW, appears to be identical as Vantec NexStar 6G (usually more expensive):
