Negotiating with used-car dealers

Hey guys,

Basically, I'm in the market for a first car and I've been looking for quite a while on both carsales.com.au and gumtree, as obviously private sellers would be a lot cheaper than those of dealers. However, it's been a couple of months now and the particular car (VW Golf) that I want either seems to have ridiculous km's or is just way too far for me to travel to look at. (2 Hours + Drive)

I've recently seen an ad on carsales for the model I'm interested in, however it's from a Used Car's Dealer.
The car is a 2008 model sitting on ~125,000km's and has about a month of rego on it left, and the list price is approx. $13,000.

To me, this seems like a hugely overpriced car, I'd say ~10k is a decent price for this atm, and I just wanted to know what people's experience with negotiating with a dealer is ?

Do you think it'd be possible to shave off ~2k ? What are some of your experiences with negotiations etc?
How should I go about negotiating? (Obviously the rego etc would be an easy argument to make, etc)

Please share your past experiences/advice !

Thanks for the help !

A lot of answers to your questions will be found on here…

Everyone has stories of sweet car buys but that does not mean they all are or can be… like a car priced at $7k, bought for $5k then sold 2 yrs later for $8k? It can be done but not from two line tips on a forum.
It takes patience and a lot of research.

Used car dealer + an old Volkswagen golf sounds like a double whammy

  • I think the rule of thumb is, and this was from a dealership expert, if a used car dealer holds on to stock for more than three months, then they may as well close the dealership.

Sounds like a bargain, the gearbox alone is a $10k replacement.

  • VW Golfs hold their value very well and even ten year old models are quite expensive; too expensive in my opinion, but that is the market. The Golf Vs are still very nice cars, which is why people are interested in them.
