Recommended Flea, Lice, Tick and Heartworm Treatment for Dogs?

Hi OZB.

My sister has bought 2 puppies, and have been treating them for fleas, ticks, lice and heartworm with advantax. It's worked nicely, but we've just run out. So I'm turning to you guys to see what treatments you all recommend.
Have you got a brand you can recommend?

And how often do you treat your dog; once a month? Once every 3 months?

Thanks all

I use Panoramis which does everything but 1 type of worm. I then get the vet to give me that treat every 3 months.

Panoramis is a once a month chewable tablet.

I buy mine off eBay, usually around $80 for 6 months.

    • Thanks for that. May I ask what is the last type of worm that needs additional treatment?

      • Tapeworm.

    Definitely Panoramis.

  • Brilliant.

May I ask what else do you use with panoramis to treat the other worm?

We use Revolution. Along with the usual suspects it also does earmites, which used to be a constant proplem with our floppy eared dogs.

We tried all the other spot-ons prior to revolution, with only limited success, best we ever got was about 3 weeks protection. Haven't had a flea in 4 or 5 years since starting the revolution.

Because we have 2 dogs we buy the one that is for larger dogs and split it down into the dose that would normally be for our size dogs. We came accross an X-amount dose per kg of dog formula in a few places online and tried that but thought its efficacy was borderline, so simply went with what the appropriate nebule content would be if we'd bought them individually.

The Canex worm tablet that comes with it apparently includes tapeworm, with Panoramis doesn't. Our vet told us though that our area was particularly bad for something or other (while ago) and that Drontal is the only thing effective (in this area) so they get that instead.

    • Thanks for this.
We had been using Advocate but recent weather has had the flea population go crazy.
Advocate kept it under control but there would still be a flea or two all the time and would make our dog go mental scratching. Panoramis didn't help.

I see by the chart on your link Revolution covers the eggs and larvae that the others dont (I thought they did)

How much? I assume the same as all the others $70-$80 per 6 pack?

I think around the $75 to $105 mark or thereabouts depending on the size of dog that it's meant for … not sure, but when you are able to split the larger dose down to do multiple applications it works out very reasonable. It's certainly far cheaper than the flea spot ons we were previously using, as well as heartguard (which they no longer need to have separately)

It was actually the RSPCA who originally suggested doing this, and they said that if you need to carry it over to next month, once opened, to simply make sure it was well sealed and in the fridge.

  • Advocate is great (well until this Christmas)
Panoramis you have the hassle of getting the dog to swallow (our dog spits it out)
