What Is a Good Price for Painting?

Wanting to get whole house painted is a small townhouse 3 bedroom. Just wondering what this would cost roughly?

  • Depends on where, and if remediation work is required. 2k for a reasonable painter + paint…

  • +1

Will the townhouse be vacant and without furniture, wall hangings, curtains, etc? Are there any cracks or holes in the plaster? Are you wanting to paint a light colour over a darker colour? Do the doors, door frames, window frames, skirting boards, etc also need painting?

airzone's $2K sounds too cheap for a three bedroom unit. I'd expect you'll be quoted at least $1000 per room, maybe less for a cash job.

  • The big issue is prep. If the current paint is in good condition and you just want to change colours, then you can viably paint straight over the top quickly and easily - so quite cheaply.
If the current paint is peeling, there are cracks in the walls needing patching etc. then hours of preparation are required before you get to the paint stage. This is where the costs quickly mount if you are paying somebody.
And remember painting is easy to do yourself. My friends and I have a tradition of all pitching in one weekend when someone moves into a new house and helping them paint. Eight adults can get a whole house painted in a weekend pretty easily (and it is much more fun with friends), and if it just costs you pizza and beer and the promise to reciprocate it is a cheap outcome.

  • If you have time (and patience), painting it yourself is the best option. We were quoted more than 2grand by a number of painters for our 2 bedroom and ended up doing it ourselves. Prep work is the key to a good end result.
