    Time and anguish saving tips:

    1. Partition your micro SD card before starting. You will probably run out of space on the phone sooner or later and want to run Link2SD anyway, so best do it first. On a 16GB card I went with 14.1GB Fat32 and 1.9GB ext2. (see notes on moving apps to SD card)
    2. Put Superuser.zip on the FAT32 partition so it is there when you need it in the last step of the root procedure.
    3. install AdFree to get rid of the nasty adds that appear in many apps

    Method 1:
working english TWRP recovery as well for this phone.
forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/to-root-huawei-y500-t2923318 (check the last page or so).

    Method 2:

rooted using a Chinese language version of CWM.
It is a three step method and you will have to (like it or not) request a bootloader unlock code from Huawei

  • tried to contact Huawei for boot loader unlock code but haven't received anything from them yet.

    • I haven't received anything from them too :( so disappointing.

      • i used this method, but with firefox + web developer tools add-on to convert the product model select list to a text field, and typed in Y550-L02. bootloader sucessfully unlocked

      • hmmm, i tried a 2nd phone and this time the EmotionUI website is telling me:

"We regret to say that the information you are searching is not found. Pleae mail to [email protected], We'll respond to you as soon as possible, thanks."

        • yeah, got the same message with my phone.

        • @lgacb08:

it is frustrating. i've emailed huawei two days ago with all the phone details but no response so far so far.

the form for my first phone worked without problems. the info for the 2nd one was recognised but they were unable to supply an unlock code.

        • @mattgal: yeah frustrating it is, i want to add some more apps but with only 300mb space and no response from huawei has made this the main issue with this deal.

        • i sent an email a second time and this time i received an unlock code by email from huawei after only a couple of hours

i think i had their chinese mail server IP address firewalled.

        • @mtg: just checked my old email and Huawei did send me the unlock code, took them over a month to do that.

I just bought this phone today. Will start looking into how to root and install a 3rd party recovery onto the phone.

  • I have try the step from this link "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57359697&postcount=13"
    under UPDATE - TRWP RECOVERY
it work til step 5) if boots correctly go back into fastbook mode and run in the dos window but it seem there are missing step.
    any idea?

    • In Step 4, it asks you to check for compatibility. It says:

      4) Check compatability by booting only initially.
      Code:
      fastboot boot TWRP_y550_20150130.img

Ok. If you follow the above instruction, you must then wait a few moments until the phone resets and then boots up the TWRP recovery screen. After that, simply switch the phone off. Leave it plugged on USB.

Now proceed to step 5. Once again, power the phone on using the Power and Volume Down button to go into Fastboot mode. Then follow the instructions in step 5.

      • My show up with below link which should i select
        http://cloud.addictivetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/TW…

        • If you did what I outlined above, during step 4, you don't actually press any of the buttons on the screen.

Press and hold the Power button until the phone is off.

Then power on the phone again while pressing the Volume Down key.

This is the fastboot mode. Connect the USB cable to your phone again and run the command inside ADB.exe

             fastboot flash recovery TWRP_y550_20150130.img

Once this is done, then you will succesfully complete the flashing of the custom Recovery.

You can then get to rooting your phone.

        • @scrimshaw: OK so which ROM will be best for the phone and could you post the link

  • I bought two of these one of which seems to refuse to install TWRP I can boot it fine using fastboot boot TWRP_y550_20150130.img but it seems to not want to flash permanently..
It always reverts back to stock recovery…
No big deal but it would be nice to get TWRP on permanently instead of having to load it through fastboot all the time.
    Anyone got any ideas?

    • Maybe you didn't unlock the bootloader properly? Re-do the steps all over again from the beginning and double check that all the numbers keyed in are correct.

    • i read on a forum that upgrading to the latest firmware (346B247?) causes some problems (not being able to flash the custom recovery image). are they both the some firmware version?

  • Hi guys,
I've rotted y550, and now got a system update notification but keep fail to update?
    Please help…
