Is McDonald's Trying to Hijack Macca's?

Hot on the heels of the "Seek" topic, I have just seen an Ad on TV where McDonalds's looks to be setting up it's future ownership of the word "Macca's".

We have make it clear to these people that they have no right and will never have any right to usurp common words, let alone people's nicknames for any purpose whatsoever. It may be fine if you own a Macca's Takeaway today, but try starting one tomorrow. Stand up Australia.

How do we stop them in their tracks?

Dude they trademarked the word 'Maccas' years ago. It's theirs. They own it. Am I right in assuming the reason you seem so flustered about this is because you plan on or are running a take-away place with the word Maccas in it? Even if it wasn't trademarked and McDonald's did take someone to court for using the word, McDonald's would win as the word Maccas is synonymous with McDonalds.

"they have no right and will never have any right to usurp common words"

I pretty much agree with this sentence, but your example confuses me. I've tried to think how I've used the word Macca's in a non McDonald's context and I can't. So I'd argue it's not really a common word.

    • I have a friend named Macca, cause he is build like a Mack truck. I drove Maccas car the other week and Macca's ok with it

      • Dumb example. You've used it as a proper noun, which doesn't really count as a "common word".
