    Price match OW?

    • +7
    • Had a look around - most price matched sites are out of stock, and the cheaper ones in the $200~250 range usually either don't come with the fenced-off chicken run section, or are smaller and house up to two chickens. This one takes four - but if anyone can find a nicer deal, let me know. : O

Damn I could have used this deal 17 years ago

  • Where is a good place to get baby chickens?

    • Depends on where you live. If you in Melbourne, I can highly recommend a guy who lives on School Road, St. Andrews. Treats his chooks well, great layers. If interested I can get his details and send them on.

      • I got our girls from these guys (West of Melbourne) as point of lay last Sept: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/diggers-rest/livestock/point-…

3 x ISA Browns and 2 x Austrolorps. Vaccinated and wormed and we get 30 - 35 eggs per week. Great with the kids and we let them out to free range for 2 hours before dusk and instinctively they put themselves to bed.

        • just make it instinctive to go and lock them in after they put themselves to bed. it's easy to get complacent when the chooks pretty much take care of themselves… only problem is foxes will quickly destroy your brood if you leave access overnight.
once a fox gets in it will kill every chook in the hen-house.

foxes are all everywhere across melbourne and will find a way in if you let them!

        • @braddsey: Yes, they live behind lock and key. Have to keep the kids out as well.

The VicMarket usually has them for a few bucks.

    • Biology class in VCE… well that's where I got mine anyway

    • Thanks.
      I live in Sydney west…

I've got the equivalent of their "premium" chicken coop and, after about five years, the roof is about to cave in. First, the wooden pieces on the sides of roof fell apart, then the small wooden pieces underneath the asphalt became wet and have been gradually falling out. Given that the roof has been letting in water from rain, I would not recommend this to anyone unless they want to cover the roof or replace it with something more sturdy.

I also don't recall paying much more than $200 from some ebay retailer a while back. If you want something that lasts, then I'd recommend something with a metal roof, although they are usually at least twice as expensive.

Guy's a word of warning from someone bitten. Do not buy this product, it is garbage. It is imported and made of cheap Chinese wood and will warp and fall apart in no time. It cannot handle being exposed to the weather.

Don't believe me, then read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fir#Uses_and_ecology

Wood of most firs is considered unsuitable for general timber use, and is often used as pulp or for the manufacture of plywood and rough timber. Because this genus has no insect or decay resistance qualities after logging, it is generally recommended for construction purposes as indoor use only (e.g. indoor drywall on framing). This wood left outside cannot be expected to last more than 12 to 18 months

So it should be marketed as an eco-friendly, biodegradable chicken coop, which also releases captive animals back into the wild!

  • I have been looking and saw this one the other day for $229 including freight on ebay.
Wont neg for first time poster :-)

    But it's not free-range, so it's bad

Buyer beware! I gave them a plate of corn muffins back in 1947 to paint my chicken coop, and they never did it!

  • I've got this for my two rabbits - it's out in the elements, so taken a bit of a beating, but really like it!

  • I've been using one of these for about 2 years with no issues
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-2M-Chicken-Coop-Hen-Chook-House…

    • I'm curious about the roof on that and if it's made out of the same stuff that mine and similar cheap coops are. Is it asphalt on top, then small wood pieces, then a thin wood sheet, covered along the sides with a wood frame that's nailed in? If so, then give it some more time and see it fall apart.

Wait for hard rubbish collection, acquire materials for free and build it yourself.

a few sheets of old corrugated iron or polycarbonate roofing, a small dark laying box and a basic frame to put chicken wire around. a few correctly sized branches or sticks for roosts. Job done!

I had an old garden shed down the back of my yard. I took the metal sheet off the door and replaced with chicken wire. made some roosts out of old garden scraps. found an old wooden box, put an entrance hole in the side and added a basic hinged roof. Added chooks and straw, then enjoyed fresh eggs daily. I'm in Melbourne - the chooks are quite happy through the winter exposed to the elements as long as they're dry.

  • Do you realise how small that coop is? Only one square metre, plus nesting box. (0.6 x 1.6m)

OK for a pair of bantams, or rabbits, but I would not squeeze my chooks into something so tiny.

  • Finally I can get some succulents chicken wings, which is better than KFC. Yum!

    • +1

You feed your cactus chicken wings?

  • Looks like a good deal. Have been looking for one with a big run so I can move it around and don't need to build a fence to protect the rest of the garden, but this place is in NSW and I'm in VIC, the shipping is discouraging. Thanks for posting.
