Neg not fair, description is accurate and the product is priced well.

      Maps: http://tinyurl.com/ybzxtsl

if you don't have the ability to find your own maps, this is clearly not the product for you. So why neg someone's post for?

This is cheaper than dealxtreme so it certainly is a good deal. This is cheap than the stuff from most other aussie sites which is around $125.

  • cheap is cheap

  • Anyone know the procedure for getting these to work in Australia? Do we definitely need an SD card? Are there free maps/software? Thanks for the bargain freddy.

  • I would personally buy this and put a pirate copy of maps and software on there.

I don't know why you would buy this gps and pay $$$ for software as you might as well buy a tom tom from the shop.

Maybe someone can link to cheap GPS software for this device.

  • This would be awesome if you could get TomTom/Garmin onto it. Anybody have a link to more info?

    • +1

yea you could do that, just use torrents to find the right software.

  • Psst watch out guys, Big Brother (aka Stephen Conroy) might be watching :)

  • The link says:
7 inches TFT high resolution 320*240.

    • yea saw that, but it may just be implying it has the resolution of a 7" screen, that's all i could think of

    Hahaha, anyone catch this ad?

    • ROFL! Nice. You sir deserve an upvote.

    • LOL! That's priceless.

  • nice bargain, considering getting

    anyone purchased from them before?

    • I buy from them all the time, they are great.

  • +2

ive purchased heaps from them. they are same as dealextreme in terms of processing time, shipping and engrish!

if this is a wince 5 unit it will run tomtom 7.985
ive got a similiar unit i bought from dx

    www.gpsmodding.com

  • Good deal even in US$ with the Australian dollor being so high. Now would be the time to buy. Shipping from overseas. How long does it usually take?

  • Based on domain name registration information…

    focalprice.com

    Registrant:
    Name : Lipeiliang
    Address : FuTian
    City : ShenZhen
    Province/State : Guangdong
    Country : CN
    Postal Code : 518028

The company is likely based in China. I guess treat it like buying an eBay item from a Chinese seller… Need to wait for 2 weeks or more for the item to arrive I reckon.

    • Shipping is from HK. I've had items sent within a week, others that took 3-4 weeks.

  • +1

ShenZhen is the border village-turned-megacity across from HK. You can bet they will be shipped from HK.
But HK parcel post has been slow recently. 2 weeks registered, still waiting on standard.
Add on a random delay for focal to obtain and post it.

    • Oh well, I ordered one anyway, don't mind the delivery time. Gives me time to read up on how to actually get some navigation software in the thing!

  • hey janketta
most of the time these units just execute an exe in a folder on the sd card for example sdcard\navigation\navigator.exe

you can usually put whatever software you have in this folder and rename it to navigation.exe and the gps will launch it.

    • Yup, that's about as much as I have managed to figure out. The main question that remains is that which navigation software is the best at the moment. I know TomTom used to be good, but there seems to be a lot of competition these days. Any recommendations? I would also like to run Oziexplorer on the device, but haven't really come across any good topographic maps of Victoria. I guess launching two different softwares can be achived by having some sort of menu automatically launcing first and then selecting the desired nav software from there?

  • does anyone know on how to go about in terms of getting all the maps? Is it possible to get them for free?

  • goblin go to www.gpsmodding.com all there

  • Mine arrived already. (considering HK post very slow lately)
The manual says it is WINCE4.2NET , 266MHz Samsung, 64MB.
Now I just need some software. Tried Route66, stuck at "at least one file is missing. please install the application again".
Its hard to find instructions. Will try again on the weekend.

Price now is not much more - $64. http://www.focalprice.com/detail_EG014B.html

    • I've been expecting mine to arrive any for about a week already, but it's still not here. Anyway, keep us posted on how you go with the software.

    • Mine just arrived. I'm honestly buggered if I know how to load software onto the thing, so once you figure it out, I'd appreciate a heads up.

    • Why on earth did you buy one with WinCE 4.2?????

You need WinCE 5.0 or later to run most of the modern GPS software programs i.e (TomTom 7/8, iGO8, MioMap 3.0+)

It was a cheap GPS, but dont expect to be able to run ANYTHING decenet on a 4.2 model, it just doenst have the infrastructure.

        • it was cheap, and I was expecting wince 5, as stated above.
How can you tell for sure which is installed? There is no decent system info.
Anyway, its working fine. Its just a GPS, not 1337 gaming platform.

          • @freddy: You said earlier it's WinCE 4.2 or rather WINCE4.2NET which is a fairly easy code to descramble. It's in the manual I have, which I assume is where you got it.

But since the manual describes an on button you have to hold, and there's actually an on switch, no button… I wouldn't be 100% about anything in that manual.

            Reading your links now. Thanks.

            • @[Deactivated]: Exactly, can't trust the manual.
But mine does have a power button. The switch is to lock the touch-screen, just mis-labelled as on/off :-)

              • @freddy: Hah! Well spotted. Haven't actually charged the thing yet, so didn't know.

Seriously, we got ourselves a top notch product :P

                • @[Deactivated]: For sixty bucks, I'm not complaining that bluetooth is missing.
Build looks good. GPS is accurate.
Comes with USB cable, AC charger and car charger - all look decent.
Old-type nokia DC plug. Music and video players are OK, speaker loud.

Now what I really want for this is some track logging software.
Its just a toy to use until my Nokia N900 arrives.

                  • @freddy: I used that Route 66 + Australia map you linked, and I'm getting a "The connection with the GPS reciever cannot be established".

The map pack seems to be loading fine… but without the GPS function it's all but pointless.

                    Ideas?

EDIT Nevermind. It could find the receiver just fine, but it wasn't getting any location data because I was indoors. They should really make that error message a little more accurate. Ah well, at the price I can't complain :)

                    • @[Deactivated]: I get that when its first turned on. Do you see a retry button?

Come on - check the menus … Settings->GPS-status. Can you see the lat/lon?
If its a dud, you'll need to send it back for an exchange. Just the main unit.
If its like DX, they'll pay the postage. (And they would very much like to be DX :-)

                      • @freddy: As my EDIT says, the problem was simply that I was indoors. The message indicated it couldn't find the receiver, not that it couldn't find satellites, which is why I didn't immediately think of going outside. But eventually it occured to me.

When outside with a good clear signal, it works fine.

                        • @[Deactivated]: Good to hear! Did anybody else get one? So many positive votes!

      • I am running iGO8 (from http://www.gpsunderground.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9737) happily on my device. So I guess it must be WinCE 5.0 then?

        • Thanks! What maps are you using please?

          • @freddy: I grabbed the maps from the same forum (http://www.gpsunderground.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9755). Using the Australia R16.1 map. I think some version of iGO should support TTS (Text to Speech), if I have understood correctly. But at least mine does not do it. Or perhaps it needs to be installed separately, I haven't had the time to figure out yet.

  • Got my unit working but dissapointed its not version 5 of WinCE as it really restricts what can be loaded onto the unit.

Have got version 7 of route66 going with 2006 maps… Is there are 2009 revision of the maps i can get for version 7 or can someone recommend another product i which works with CE4.2 and has mo0re upto date maps.

    Thanks

    • Can you confirm the WinCE version from the device? Or are you just going by the manual?

  • I don't know how to tell which version the system has. Can you point me in the right direction to query the device? Thanks.

    I found this program

    http://ceregeditor.mdsoft.pl/

and when it connects it shows its version 5.0.0

    Will need to test further…

OK, got it working with version 8 of route66…great :)

  • I have received my unit today, and CERegeditor is reporting for me version 5.0.0 also.

  • I've managed to load Tomtom 7 running on it, with Aussie maps.
It is behaving a bit strangely though .. it seems if you dont touch the screen for a minute or two the display stops. Soon as you touch the screen it keeps going again. Not sure if it's an issue with the GPS, or with TomTom.

  • Now trying iGO8, working very well.

  • +2

I figured out the TomTom freezing problem. Workaround written up on my blog, http://matthewhand.blogspot.com/2009/12/cheap-chinese-gps-fr…

    • Thanks. I think I'll just avoid tomtom then :-)
iGo8 is great. It keeps telling me I'm over the speed limit though.

    • Thankyou Rinco!
I haven't tried this yet, but I'm sure it will work since you've obviously tested it.
I am happy with iGO so will stick with that, but it's good to have another option if needed.
Unfortunately I blew up my GPS by accidently passing 12v through it! So I simply purchased a new one :) EVen though it's not quite as cheap as before, it's still a great price … around $US63 .

So does anyone have a recommendation on what the best software is to run on this? I'm looking for a package that will actually have a voice telling you the directions…

  • Watch out!
Bought a GPS from Focalprice which had a fault line of static running down the middle of the screen. Focalprice have told me this is 'normal' and is no problem!! No problem for them maybe, but the screen is unwatchable.
Dealextreme is more expensive, but their service is better.
