"The rOtring 600 Mechanical Pencil has solid brass body that is machined for optimal weight and balance, which is the primary upgrade found in stepping up from the rOtring 500. Featuring an ergonomic, hexagonal barrel for better grip, a fixed lead guidance sleeve that offers lead protection without obscuring the page, and a lead hardness grade indicator, the rOtring 600 has the same build quality and precise mechanics for lead advancement as the rOtring 800, but without the retractable tip. • so waht's normal price. how do we know this is a bargain

    • +6

It's not actually a bargain. Other places list it at a similar price. Jetpens has it for $33, compared to $30.25 of the Massdrop price.

      http://www.jetpens.com/Rotring-600-Drafting-Pencil-0.5-mm-Bl…

If you want a solid drafting pencil, go for the $10 Staedtler Marsmicro. Comes in sizes 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9. And if you shop around a bit, you can get Officeworks to pricematch it and get it for ~$7.

      • +1

        Jetpens has $12 shipping.

If you want a cheaper drafting pencil, take a look at the GraphGear 500 at Kinokunia

        • -2

Or scour the floors of your local design college. Got a free Pentel PS535 that way.

      • +3

so massdrop is the cheaper option?

        • AFAIK, yes.

        • -1

It is, but that doesn't make it (what I consider) a real bargain.

        • @babylon: Bargain: "An item (usually brand new) purchased for significantly less than the usual, or recommended, price; also (when not qualified), a gainful transaction; an advantageous purchase."

        • @tf2manu994: "significantly less than the usual".

        • @babylon: $45 [Jetpens] - $30.25 [Massdrop] = ~$15
Thats 1/3 of the Jetpens price.

You save 33.33%. Fairly certain that's significant. And this isn't factoring in $3 extra saving that will happen if ~26 more people join in the next 7 days.

          @tf2manu994:

          USD$30.25 = AUD$39.40

You can order it from Amazon with shipping for AUD$31.11

I don't know if you would consider a ~20% discount as significant, though.

        • @babylon: That only works for the .7, if you get the more popular model [ http://www.amazon.com/rOtring-Mechanical-Pencil-Black-190444… ], it is more expensive.

It's $0.46 more expensive than Massdrop, and you will get it April 24 - 29. The Massdrop one ships May 1 so you will probably get it May 15 if you wanted to save some money.

It's still not really a significant bargain.

        • @babylon: It will be $3USD cheaper when more people buy.

Reviews are pretty good on Amazon.
    http://www.amazon.com/rOtring-Mechanical-Pencil-Black-190444…

It does look like the kind of pencil you'd use if you were a draftsperson, architect or designer.

Sadly $30 USD translates to roughly $39 AUD which is still a pretty hefty price to pay for a mechanical pencil.

    • Yep. I ended up buying because according to reviews, it lasts for ages and it is high quality.

      • +3

Only if you dont lose it!

        • +1

I feel that if I think of something as worth more, I won't lose it, because I would check that I have it all the time. :P

        • @tf2manu994:

          Or somebody might steal it!!!

        • -1

@theworks: I'm hoping no one does. I'll keep an eye on it. And if I find out that someone has, their entire pencilcase may go "missing"

    • Didn't see any reviews by George Castanza

      • I think he would find it subpar. After all, it isn't the Rolamech 1000 :P

  • I only like the 0.7 size leads (but haven't used Rotring brand for more than 10 years) so as above Amazon is a lot cheaper.

  • Koh-I-Noor 2.0mm leadholder or gtfo.

    • But sharpening

      • I know, but I still like them for nostalgic reasons. Grew up using my Dad's old leadholders from when Ford still designed cars with pen/pencil, paper & French curves.

These days I mostly use them in the work shop instead of a carpenters pencil and for a bit of sketching.

  • Might want to consider the "high grade kurutoga".

I considered a rotring, but ended up buying the kurutoga (high + normal), kerry, tect2way and shalaku. Kurutoga is the closest to this, is cheaper and has a 'sharpening' feature (although I just got it and I'm not convinced it really sharpens as supposed to yet..)

    • Hi justtoreply, I already have the Kuru Toga Roulette (the even higher end model) and GraphGear 500, but would like to upgrade my GG500. The Kuru Toga is not that great for diagrams, as the sharpening doesn't work when you don't lift the pencil much. Also, it doesn't have the standard 4mm drafting sleeve.

The Kerry's main feature is a lid, which is not necessary if you have somewhere safe to store the pencil. The Shalaku is far too thick for my liking. The Tect2way can be a shaker pencil, which I dislike, and it is made of plastic and it is too light for my liking.

After this delivers, I will have a KuruTogaRoulette in .5 for writing, a Rotring 600 in .5 for drafting and making diagrams, as well as the GraphGear 500 in .7 for the same purpose, but if I need thicker lines.

      • +1

Fair enough then. I wasn't aware of any 4mm drafting sleeve (and I'm an engineer!).

The shalaku I wouldn't recommend. The tect2way I've moved away from. Really like the Kerry (with the cap off - when short it feels really good in my hand) and the kurutoga (again for how it feels).

This is just from a writer's perspective, I don't draft sketches anymore.
