Not sure if anyone will find this useful but I've been learning Android app development for a while and just released my first app: OzBargain Notify! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.samlewis.oz…

Basically it will alert you whenever there is either a new deal on the main page or if there is a new deal with greater than 50 or 100 votes (you can specify this). It's totally free (no ads or anything) and I mainly made it as something I'd personally find useful - I'm always annoyed when I just miss deals and this definitely helps!

It's totally free (without any ads or nasty stuff) and the clicking on an notification opens the browser to take you to the deal on the OzBargain website - so OzBargain won't lose any of its own ad traffic to it! It uses hardly any resources too.. all the push stuff is done server side so all the app is really doing is receiving notifications.

Would love to know what anyone thinks and if it's useful to them too! Hope I've posted this in the right place as well. :)

Bear in mind this is the initial release so there may be a bug or two. Let me know if there any problems.

    This app looks promising! Thanks OP!

    A suggestion for the future: notifications for deals posted about certain products, from certain stores, or with certain tags (or a combination of those criteria).

    Thanks guys! An iOS version would definitely be possible, the only real thing stopping me is Apple's $99/year developer licence! Someone find me a deal for that! ;)

    Just to remind everyone, you can get email notifications for front page deals.

    • Go to My Account - Subscriptions - Events"
    • Click "Notify me by email when: A deal reaches the front page"

    Deals that hit 50 votes are auto-posted to Facebook, Twitter: OzBargain Hot & Google Plus.

    It needs a 6 hour timeout. I just turned wifi on after a day and got 30 notifications

      Ah! Haven't experienced that but will definitely fix it in an update. Sorry for the notification spam. :)

      Should be fixed now, set the pushes to expire after 6 hours. It's a server side fix so no updating of the app required. Let me know if you still have any dramas though!

    I don't know if there's a way to allow this app to run on mobile data, but that would be great if it could. I'm only on wifi at home. This app is so good with lollipop - just swipe away!

      It should work on your mobile data as well as on WiFi. Does it not work on 3G/4G for you? It definitely works for me on both 3G and WiFi.

        Nope. Someone else mentioned that they got spammed when they turned on wifi too. Is there a setting i need to change?

          Very weird, it works over the standard android push infrastructure that all apps use (gmail etc) so I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work over your mobile network if you're getting notifications for other apps just fine.

          Do you get spammed with lots of notifications when you get back on wifi too? I thought Davo was just saying he got spammed when he connected his phone back to the internet after not being connected at all.

          What version of Android are you using? Are you logged in on the phone to your Google account? Will investigate this a bit further.

    Would be good to be able to define time windows you don't want notifications. I.e. I don't want a notification at 1 am.

      What behavior would you want? Just to never see stuff that appears at 1am? Or for it to pop up later?

      I just automatically have my phone go on silent at night so I'm not disturbed from any notifications.

    Hi Rigby..Is it possible to get an option to "notify me when" any deal is posted ,not just frontpage.I currently use the email option but it lags a bit behind,it can take a couple in minutes for the system to work.

    How does your OzBargain Notify app work on an Android phone?

    I downloaded it and installed and now I am stuck on the welcome screen.

    No button to move forward?

      Cannot get it to work.

      No notification of front page deals at all.

      No popup. No nothing.

      Just staring at the settings page the whole time.

      What am I missing?

    I just use the Twitter app on my iPhone with push notifications. When a new deal goes on Ozbargain, there is a corresponding tweet which is immediately pushed to my phone. No need for a dedicated app for this.

    I switched to this method after noticing there is a big delay in the email notification method causing me to miss some big deals. For some reason, tweets are almost instantaneous with deals being posted.

    @OP any chance of adding more filters and/or more searches?

    Something I am wanting is 100+ upvotes AND in freebies category.

    Maybe you could look at doing something like custom +vote and catergory/tag
