I wouldn't call this much of a deal - restricted to a very select group and only 4 days of play - I feel like they should be doing a free to all weekend by now.

FYI the client is 30gb - I've currently been getting download speeds of around 1MB/s (quite slow).

    • +4

30gb? This is what was in my email:

The client is approximately 80GB, so please begin your download as early as possible. You will need to download the entire game before attempting to play.

I didn't even bother trying to download it. Wasn't impressed with the beta.

      • I think it's 80gb unpacked - at 1% I still have 30169MB to go.

        • DrStinge i'd honestly save your download and HDD space and look to something else. You'll stil have to buy it and 4 days ishardly enough time to work out what's what and get into things.
Go watch reviews from last years launch if you don't know what ESO is all about. Angry Joe's is pretty spot on.

        • @Vlaka:
AngryJoe did get that review pretty accurate.

  • Free weekend? I thought this went F2P?

    • Once you pay a huge sum of $$ for the game.

      • +1

I wouldn't say "huge" it's the standard RRP of any game.

        • It's an opinion thing.

Take Civ: Beyond Earth as an example. I consider US$80 or US$90 a "huge" sum for that game but many people still purchased it and would disagree with me.

Considering what ESO offered for the price tag, it was a huge sum to pay in my eyes.

    • +1

you have to buy it first.

A free weekend gives a chance for gamer to "play before you buy" period

      • +2

Except us Beta players have been in the game already and didn't purchase it for a reason :)

        • and didn't purchase it for a reason :)

And others did , so don't assume nobody bought it because you didn't.

        • @easternculture:
Are you actually aware that this "Welcome Back" offer ONLY applies to those Beta players who DIDN'T buy the game?

No-one else except those old Beta players will get the serial to activate the game.

    • we're inviting all beta players WHO NEVER PURCHASED THE GAME

  • This just came in email - also get 500 free crowns:

Not attempting to attack you East but this should be in the forums section as it's not a deal, the game isn't even discounted for us people who waste hundreds of hours of our precious time doing bug reports which were never even addressed. Can't even comment on the ESO forums, how sad is that that they block out all but a few.

They even sent me this as they must have known how many people would be laughing right now:

That's not my style, nor would I do it to someone who regularly posts good deals - except this once.

I'm assuming you play ESO so I'm trying to contain my true feelings about the game ;)

        • i dont play games at all. However i did see this online, then searched the deals on ozbargain and found this Deal that was posted last year & reached > 100 votes. And due to the popularity of that deal, i posted this

        • +1

          @easternculture:
          K, I understand now.

That old deal you linked was for the actual Beta, the game hadn't been released at that stage, it was (kind of) available to anyone. I noticed quite a few said it wasn't a deal either

This current deal is only for those people who played in those beta events (more than a year ago now), we are been offered a free weekend with the option to buy the game (at full price) upon the weekends completion. Because so few people have downloaded the client, and a few even got on ESO twitter page for a good laugh, the company must be trying to entice people by now giving people 500 "crowns" (purchased in-game for real cash, 1 crown = roughly 1 cent).

The actual game would then cost AU$70 and can ONLY be purchased from ESO, so no cheap CD-Keys.

        • @easternculture:
          Addendum

I should clarify: I understand why you posted this thinking it was a deal but I don't understand why your not a gamer ….. that's crazy talk!

  • I really liked this game, as a healer thought the mechanics were brilliant but just nothing to do end game except grind more XP. Maybe things have changed these days.

    • As opposed to every other MMO where you just grind gear?

      • At least you're progressing towards something. ESO has nothing but xp grinding and all gear can be pretty much crafted which makes it mean even less.
@robbie: nothing has changed. It's still the same bare bones single player mmo (yes it's not supposed to make sense) with delusions of grandeur.

        • I managed to score a copy before this "tamriel unlimited" stuff for $20. And I've been playing it for the story…

So as a single player MMO it's pretty good! lol

      • WoW is a grind like nothing else on the planet, and they charge a small fortune for the privilege, yet they still seem to do consistently well (financially). Don't get me wrong, I think it's excessively amusing that people pay a subscription just to waste their real lives farming 1's & 0's, but we can't deny that Blizzard is doing something correctly.

Then we have a game like ESO ……..

      • In other MMO's there is the challenge of raid boss mechanics to defeat and that is the challenge for many including myself. Gear is secondary though obviously needed to be able to attempt more difficult content. The PvP content in other MMOs is also much better.

  • +2

Trying to lure in such a niche of players who would NEVER return. It's still the same junk as it was a year ago only with more grinding and a lot less to do at max level.

  • When are they doing free-to-play for all?

    • Someone asked that on their Facebook page, they made a response that they were looking into it but wasn't planned as of yet.

I think the main aim is to get the Beta testers back as the group contained many people who were playing specifically to write a reviews prior to the game going live. If ESO can entice them back then maybe the changes will mean more favourable reviews - just my thoughts though.

      • Wait, let me get this straight. There are already free beta testers, and they all gone? And ESO planned to sell this game for money? and somehow they want ppl to go back?

        • The beta period was free. When it ended, people had to pay plus sub. Now they are offering free entry for the original beta testers for a small period of time.

        • We knew that purchasing the game & a monthly subscription would be a requirement once it went live, just very few of us found the game worthy.

  • I was a beta player, as was my wife, and neither of us were impressed with the game as a whole based on our wealth of experience with the MMO genre. We'll still be giving this a go though to see what's improved since then.

    • Let me know if it's any better. I quit my download after a couple of days :/

    • Same as Ebany. I would be keen to hear your thoughts on whether things have genuinely improved or not.
