Which one of these TVs would you buy?

I am after a new TV and am looking to spend around $1,000.

If you had to choose one of the following, which one would it be?

stick with good brand not seiki, pick one with largest screen possible under your budget, no need 3D but smart feature is cool to have.

doesnt matter plasma or led, ignore people who said "save electricity with xxx" "xxx more blacks, contrast, etc" because looking at your budget im sure you wont care much about them :)

if you need 3D, get one with PASSIVE 3D not active

      Don't listen to this guy.

That Seiki is exceptional value for money for a UHD 65inch LED. Its a dumb screen (not a smart TV), but that can be remedied with a dongle. Seiki as far as Im aware use LG panels, pretty much the same as everyone else. 100% get the Seiki, it is bigger, has 4 times the resolution, and most customers on amazon are very happy.

Also, anyone who mentions plasma screens (that have been out of production for about a year), probably isn't someone you want to take advice from. You cannot buy plasma screens anymore.Everything is LCD (LED is a type of backlighting for LCD) and there is one OLED currently on sale.

      • ok ok i just feel it is safer to buy known brand. i have no friends who bought seiki thats why i dont recommend.

about plasma vs led, yeah thats what i said. most of tv are led anyway so it doesnt matter, most likely you will get led. but some people will prefer plasma.

And again, you cannot buy a plasma. Perhaps comment on your area of expertise rather than spouting your mouth off about something you have clearly no idea about?

        • @thorton82: Whilst they are very rare, there are a couple of manufacturers still doing plasma: http://www.cnet.com/topics/tvs/products/plasmas/

I have no knowledge of Seiki, but typically most manufacturers use someone else's LCD panels. Just because they use an LG panel doesn't mean they will look as good as an LG set. A lot of it comes down to the processing electronics. A good test is to see how well it rescales an image. The better manufacturers spend more on their R&D and use more sophisticated algorithms. It's a similar difference to zooming in on a image on your computer, with one using photoshop while the other one uses cheap and nasty pixel-doubling.

@endotherm: did you even look at your link? No one makes plasmas. Everything you linked to was from 2013. It is 2015. The upscaling for basic tv will be fine, SD looks bad on any set. You are also completely overlooking the fact that the Seiki is UHD, 4K, it has 4 times the resolution of the other sets. Because it is a dumb tv, you can plug in any dongle/reciever/stab you want and let that do the upscaling. You should really stop posting in this thread, you are just spreading misinformation.

@thorton82: Actually yes I did look at the link, that's why I posted it. It was showing dates from October 2014 and those models were still current. Unfortunately, I'll admit to my mistake, the checkbox I ticked to display plasma only did not stay on, and it showed a number of non-plasma sets. I know perfectly well that most/all manufacturers stated that 2014 would be the last year they would be producing plasma and I stated that it was very rare to find one. I'm not a big fan of them myself so I haven't gone looking intently to find one, but I have seen some still on the shelves this year being sold as new/display stock. The Australian Consumer Law requires that they be supported for any warranty period, and spare parts and replacements need to be made available by the manufacturers for a while longer. I'm not sure why you are going on about 4k UHD (I didn't say anything one way of the other), but I sincerely doubt that a generic dongle will do as good a job of processing the signal that native circuitry designed to drive the panel would. Just stick a standard SD transmission side by side on a Sony and a Soniq; if you can't see the difference you are blind! You might want to ease off on the smug comments, you're not the only one with an opinion and not the definitive authority in this field. Insulting people with allegations of mouthing off and spreading misinformation isn't going to endear you to anyone, and I won't be seeking your permission to post here.

@endotherm: it is not rare, you cannot buy one. The fact of the matter is that plasma televisions where superior to LCD/LEDs, but more expensive to produce. They are now old tech as no one has invested in creating 4k plasmas, but the last ever plasma produced (samsung 8500) was a superior TV to all of the previous and current 1080p LEDs. I can't understand why you say you are not a fan of plasmas, as they were always the best televisions. The last gen was thin, reasonably power efficient and had superior blacks, colours, contrast and movement. It offered the same resolution, and I guess the sole argument against a plasma was perhaps a slight buzz and maybe if you are using a static image, they weren't suitable. We both know that you haven't seen any plasmas on shells at stores, there was an enormous rush for he last Samsungs when it was announced that production would end. They have not been available since last year, anywhere.

As for the televisions mentioned, 4k wins, full stop. Ignore what endotherm says about up scaling, read the reviews of users. (There is another post on here talking about how cheap this Seiki is and there are reviews of happy customers in that post. You can also talk to owners OP, who are recommending this tv.

  • Thank you erwinsie.

Why is Sony 50" KDL50W700B $200 more expensive than it was late last year? :(

      Australian dollar most likely.

I'd go the sony - it's similar to the others, but has 4 HDMI ports

    • If you compare HD like with like, both Sony and Panasonic will be displaying greater range of shading - not immediately obvious on strong colours, or scenes with motion but one of the almost imperceptible features that make a difference over the lifetime of viewing. You wouldn't miss it if you went for Samsung's brilliance at imitating cartoon shading, but less tiring to watch with a more natural result for non-studio programmes.

Thank you all. Ended up getting the Sony 50" for $899, but also got a blu ray player so got $110 off :)
