  • You realise that YKK produces 90% of the world's zippers? Haha
There is really no need to advertise that imo…

Sure but not all manufacturers uses YKK. If one day your pants zippers split, you will only wish you had a YKK.

      • so true, ykk zippers are tops

        • and bottoms

Macpac make a great down jacket for the price. In terms of durability & quality. With the other brands u pay for the branding, styling, ethically sourced etc which may/ may not justify premium pricing

(compared to north face, patagonia, kathmandu)

    • I had a look at these during my lunch break. I've long resisted the down jacket craze, but these might be the ones that change my mind.

Seem pretty good for the price. Certainly not a big heavy jacket, the Large has 90g of fill, but for urban / town use I reckon they'd be great.

The stuff-sack they come with (that the jacket fits into) is crazy small. My only complaint would be that I wasn't really crazy about the colours.

the whole point of down is that it's light. I dont actually have an "uber light" down jacket, I've got one for colder temperatures, but down is definitely warm and lighter than most other materials.

it's not just a "craze"… maybe the lighter "fashion" ones are…

yeh macpac make pretty boring colours… but i guess im not a fashionable guy

75g fill weight is not much, when Winter is Coming.

I'd spend an extra $30 for a "proper" lightweight down jacket:

And for thin layers, use polypropylene and polyester fleece (Polartec etc).

    • yeh the "ultra light" ones are really for spring… not really for winter… but then again our Australian winters are nothing compared to Europe or NZ

  • Went to Anaconda last Saturday and their duck down seem to have a strong smell, does this apply to this one? The smell is the main reason I did not buy it.

    • the down jackets ive tried on do not have any smell whatsoever. maybe the ones u saw were just put in a smelly place haha

I have a Macpac down jacket but haven't noticed any smell.
    Its a sleeved Sundowner XP.
Its actually too warm to do much moving around in and makes me sweat like a dog if it do, around the armpit area.
I guess its designed for climates colder than WA winters.
I'm now thinking about a down vest to hopefully eliminate this issue.
Love my Macpac gear of which I've heaps.
