  • No idea on providers but make sure you use one who places baits down. Baits are the only proven way of properly getting rid of them (sprays don't work) and you can also DIY if you want to save some dollars. Going into winter you will find them less of a problem in any case.

  • How disappointing, the only response you got was a paragraph of misinformation and untruths. Search this site for one. http://www.aepma.com.au/ManagerSearch

    • Which parts of my response were untrue?

      • How about (sprays don't work).
Maybe they didn't work for you because you used some pre mixed off the shelf product and have no training in how or where to apply it.
There are lots of liquid insecticides available and more are released onto the market regularly. Companies would not spend the money developing them if they didn't work.

  • Well despite sraymond apparently spruiking the need to use a professional exterminator, it can be done yourself fairly cheaply. Lequ83 was right that using a gel bait such as "Advion cockroach gel" is far better than a spray. You will need to combine the gel baiting with an insect growth regulator like "Gentrol Point Source IGR Cockroach growth regulator discs". The bait will knock out the adults and the growth regulator discs will stop most growth of immature cockroaches.

Advion also makes an ant gel which works especially well. Even though you can order from overseas, be aware that customs may intercept your package. Best to buy from a local seller, even though you will pay a bit more. While professional exterminators certainly are a necessity on a lot of occasions, I think you will be easily be able to tackle this one yourself.

    • I'm not spruking anything. The OP asked for recommendations to get their house treated. Not for an Internet DIY Kit.

Well it's not like you provided a recommendation. You provided a link to a site with presumably no real information about the quality of the providers listed within. My intent was to provide the OP with some additional relevant info and options… I thought this was a reasonable thing to do.

        • It mightn't reveal the quality of the company, but it at least shows they are serious about pest control and not some fly by nighter. You made no attempt to answer the OP and gave them erroneous information that would only confuse them further.

      • That's very true. I was just offering a possibly cheaper solution that works well and is often much more effective than the commercial solutions offered by companies that use cheaper powders and do not use growth control regulators.

If all the pest control companies were using the solution which I espoused, I would have no problem with recommendations of pest control professionals, as they can often pick up problems before the DIYer can (getting up into ceilings is an example). Unfortunately the industry seems to be driven very much on a lowest cost basis, which means the use of effective but not as effective solutions as the one I suggested.

A professional pest controller told me a couple of years ago that his company charges him $70 for a tube of the ant control gel, whereas online it costs about a third of that (even less when the $A was higher).

So you are right. The OP was asking for a pest control service solution. Now that they have some more information they might be able to make better choices when questioning potential suppliers.

  • also interested in this topic. Infest my house with spiders and i could care less, but cockroaches make me feel physically ill. We sprayed ourselves using a DIY inside and outside and used 12 mortein (or whatever brand they are) nest kill black baits. is that enough or is there something else i need to be doing?

      It will work temporarily but in the end use my solution;
      1. Cockroach gel applies to surfaces according to the instructions applied every 6 months or so.
      2. Insect growth regulator discs which need to be replaced every 3 months.
      3. Once the insect growth regulators have started to work, you may not need to apply the gel quite so often.

The gel is not really recommended to be used in conjunction with sprays or where sprays have already been used.

The discs are usually placed in the kitchen, laundry, bathroom and other places where you see cockroaches.

      • Are the discs the black Moretein things?

        • +1

I'm not sure what the Mortein discs are, but I doubt they are the same as the Gentrol Point Source IGR Cockroach growth regulator discs I mentioned in my first post. For the gel you will need Advion cockroach gel. Both you can find on eBay. Local suppliers are preferred even though they are sometimes a bit more expensive as customs may stop the importation of the gel.

i found the cockroach bombs to be very effective.

If you are using company's dont use kevin joyce pest management, biggest con artists going around.

Yeah I've been using Flea Bombs for years, they work well at getting almost all insects (I guess it doesn't matter what type of insect bomb used as it killed everything like spiders, cockroach, ants, fleas, ect). I didn't have an infestation but it is a good at preventing insects number to grow. Best part is the days (and weeks) after using the Flea Bomb insects come out of their hiding spots and just die on the floor so all you need to do is vacuum them up.

  • I had a cockroach problem. See if you can locate their main nest. Usually near a water supply. Middle of night with a torch. Kill as many as possible. Buy some gel . I used max force gold. eBay.
Seriously, the baits from supermarkets won't do the job. Gel is more expensive first up, but I think more economical in the long run. Also consider the sticky strips from bunnings as part of a first up assault.
You do need to address the problem, as they will get into your appliances and can destroy circuit boards. Good luck.

  • Of course getting rid of any pest starts with reducing the environments / conditions that cause the pest to be above normal levels in the first place. Do you have poorly ventilated underhouse? do you have piles of junk in your yard, garbage? Whilst cockroaches live naturally in many environments, certain conditions can make your house a better habitat for pests. I had a friend once who couldn't understand why the rats kept coming back to his house every 6 months. Poisoning only gets rid of the "current" inhabitants and you don't live in a closed environment. No pest controller will tell you these things however because repeated treatment is more profitable than a cure.

    • Perfect environment for German cockroaches is a kitchen with a fridge/dishwasher and a few cracks and crevices to hide in. Infestation usually occurs when people ignore or DIY the problem. Not many pestles want to return year after year to a house full of cockroaches. Most will offer suggestions to reduce the chances of reinfestation. It's called Integrated Pest Management and has been in practise for over 20 years now.
