Taxi meter fare?

I travelled from Manly to international airport by taxi the other day. I felt that the taxi driver was very sneaky, it took him 1 hour+ to get to the destination and he went through rockdale to get to airport! Is this a common route? When I questioned him he said he was taking a shortcut and that there was jam on the main road etc. I told him I was in hurry and yet he took such a ling route so this upsets me a bit. When i reached airport, the meter showed $109ish, but he demanded $116.80. I asked why was that and he said it was because I ordered the taxi by phone. When I asked for an official receipt, he refused to give me a printed copy giving the lame excuse that it will fade, so instead, he wrote the amount on the company card. Do you think I have been scammed? I thought the callout fee will have been included in the meter but apparently not to him :(.

Using this http://www.taxifare.com.au/ - your fare is around $70 to $100. You didn't mention what time this was. If it was during non-peak times, then yes, I think you got scammed. However, if it was during peak times, then I think the price is more or less probably right.

    • It was around 1pm, weekday

      • Should've fought back when he declined to give a receipt.
        This isn't Uber…

Uber email receipts and you can print them from the website.

        • I was in a hurry because he took so long to drive to airport so didnt push it further :(. I think he might have done it on purpose. He knew I was in a hurry so he took the long way so that when it came to paying I wont make a fuss

  • u also crossed the bridge and the ED, so u gotta tack that on as well…

i would have insisted on a receipt, or get his licence details and complain to taxi company.

He took you the long way… Rockdale is 2-3km past the airport from the way you came.

OP, you went the long way around the airport… which follows the signs to international.

As for the card, that's pretty sketch. too late now.

    • I questioned him when I saw he drove to rockdale but he insisted he was trying to avoid traffic. It was pretty jammed at rockdale too >:(

      • you get to choose the route, but you didn't. So you're liable for that.

The card thing is so that he doesnt need to declare his income. The fees not on the meter have been pocketed himself.

        Learn and move on.

And they wonder why Uber is so popular.

  • 116.80$… Ouch >.<

  • Scammed. Just an idea but try reversing the charge on your cc due to the fact be made you pay for something you didn't agree to and refusing receipt etc etc

    • Interesting point, there is no receipt and by the sounds of the story the taxi was doing something dodgy to not be able to print one… Still, there was a service provided so it wouldn't be right to reverse the charge.

As an aside OP, keep an eye on your CC, it wouldn't be the first time a card is skimmed by a dodgy taxi. Though way more prevelant on Cabcharge cards from what I hear.

    • Paid cash :(

    Catch an uber next time.

a true ozbargainer would never catch a taxi

  • When I use a cab I use google maps when waiting for it to arrive to determine the quickest route with traffic and tell the cab driver to go that route. They can't refuse as you're paying.

its normal traffic the other way is ALWAYS packed… would of been faster going through the back of rockdale
